Swedishman (8g Gogo-Volgana) took today’s Gr. III International Grand Prix Anjou-Maine at Angers, a 3125 meter distance handicap event with a purse of €100,000. 17 starters contested this Quinte+ race of the day with a €5.7 million jackpot. Franck Nivard teamed the winner for trainer Thierry Duvaldestin to his 25th career victory, now for €801,330 earned. Swedishman overcame a 25 meter handicap to score in 1.13.5kr at 3.6/1 odds and has proven this summer that he can handle upper-level competition in France. Stetheric  (8g Alpha Barbes-Justice Pruvee) was second for trainer/driver Franck Ouvrie with Uprince (6g Prince d’Espace-Malupricia) third at 29/1 for Eric Raffin, he also handicapped 25 meters. Swedishman (8g Gogo-Volgana), with veteran reinsman Joseph Verbeeck aboard, worked out a perfect pocket trip in this 2700 meter autostart contest before closing along the pegs to win the €100,000 Gr. III Grand Prix Federation du Nord in 1.12.8kr at La Capelle. He went off at odds of 8-1. Swedishman was first to the front before yielding to favorite Roi du Lupin handled by Anthony Barrier. Roi du Lupin led into the stretch after holding off a first over bid, from sixth, by the great mare Roxane Griff and Eric Raffin. Roxane Griff was unable to reach the leader and ended a tiring fifth. Roi du Lupin held on bravely for second ahead of Reve de Baylev with Mathieu Abrivard aboard. Quinoa du Gers was fourth for Franck Ouvrie. After several lead changes throughout the 2200 meter contest, reinsman Franck Ouvrie rallied the three year-old son of Oceano Nox to a length victory in 1.12.8kr for trainer Frederic Platt, the winner’s third career score in 18 outings. The victory in the €240,000 purse event increased his life earnings to over €306,000. Un Mec d’Heripre took today’s Gr. II International Prix d’Ete at Paris-Vincennes. One of this summers’ best European based trotters, the six-year-old son of Orlando Vici-I Love You Darling scored in 1.13.2kr over the 2700 meter course to win for Franck Nivard and trainer Fabrice Souloy. The winner now has 17 career victories good for earnings of €1,001,780. Roxane Grif, a career winner of €2,474,618 battled gamely throughout, much of the journey uncovered on the outside, to hold second for Eric Raffin and trainer Sebastian Guarato. What a great mare she is! Veteran Roi du Lupin closed steadily to be third for Anthony Barrier. He’s now a career winner of €1,856,845 for owner/trainer J-P Marmion. The Vincennes card today was a good one with four graded events including the monte Prix de Basly for €120,000, and two other upper level events. Last week showcased solid, competitive racing in France, Italy, Sweden and Hungary. Mid-week graded action at Paris-Vincennes highlighted the lead in to a superb racing weekend.  Africaine took the Gr. II Prix Guy le Gondidec Wednesday for Jean-Etienne Dubois. The four-year-old daughter of Oiseau de Feur scored easily in 1.13.6kr over 2700 meters. On Thursday, Paris-Vincennes conducted two more Gr. II events that went to Valdice de Mars in a monte test (Prix Legoux-Longpre) over 2850 meters. This five-year-old daughter of Lynx de Bellouet scored in 1.13.9kr for Yohan Lebourgeois. The other Gr II event was the Prix Jules Thibault over 2700 meters that Athos des Elfes won for Joel Van Eeckhaute in 1.13.7kr.
