The Anders Lindqvist trained, and co-owned with Peter Gerry of Arden Homestead Stable, four year-old gelded son of Look de Star looked boxed approaching the stretch but Mlle. The historic Saint-Legers des Trotteurs meeting kicks off today at Caen with a 2450m UET Masters series race, the time honoured Prix des Ducs de Normandie a group two worth 150,000 euros, in honour of a famous trotteur of the 1920s who won the 1928 Critrerium des 3 Ans and went on to be equally successful at stud. The son of Salam was a prolific broodmare sire, and one his daughters produced the dam of Feu Follet, one of France's most influential sires. Duc de Normandie's influence is still felt today, with last year's Prix d'Amerique winner Royal Dream (Love You) decending from one of the great horse's daughters Rose Marie IV, while two of France's successful sires Copenhagen Cup and Prix de France winner Kool du Caux and Criterium des 4 Ans winner Rolling d'Heripre (Dahir de Prelong) also trace to the great Duc on the maternal line. Rolling d'Heripre is represented by Blooma d'Heripre in the Saint-Leger des Trotteurs which is one of two of France's most famous monte races which are run later today. Indeed it was under saddle that some of Duc de Normandie's descendants excelled with top sire Gai Brillant (Podosis) and Fine Perle (Marpheulin) both being Saint-Leger winners themselves, while the monte millionaire of the 1990s Arcadia (Jiosco) won the Prix du Cornullier. As befitting a race named after one of France's great stallions, some of giants of the game who have gone on to make their mark in the breeding shed feature heavily in the honours roll. Reve d'Udon, a remarkable racehorse in his own right, a Criterium des 5 Ans winner in the bike and a Prix du Cornulier winner under saddle, is the grandsire of none other than Market Share, and he won this race twice in 1989 and 1990. The world's leading sire for the past two seasons, Love You also won the race twice in 2004-2005 and he is represented in the Prix Henri Balliere later in the day by the hot favourite Airport and a second entrant in Aglite Jenilou. Another former Prix de Ducs de Normandie winner is France's champion monte stallion Goetmals Wood who is the sire of top Saint-Leger chance Bomba. The last two seasons the race has been won by Texas Charm, who was the favourite for this year's Prix d'Amerique until injury, while the previous two winners were emerging sire Quaker Jet ( a son of Love You) and Prix d'Amerique winner Oyonnax (In Love With You). Jean-Paul Marmion's Roi du Lupin is the early favourite for this year's renewal, narrowly from Cedric Megissier 's Uhlan du Val and Fabrice Souloy's Quinoa du Gers. Thierry Duvaldesin's tough gelding Swedishman, Christian Bigeon's Tiego d'Etang and Phillipe Moulin's Valse Darling from the Ecurie Victoria Dreams stable are the others in the market. Philippe Allaire might be eyeing America with his super trotter Ready Cash, but his eyes will be firmly on another pair of his charges at Caen tomorrow when Bird Parker and Bomba line up in the Group 1 Saint-Leger des Trotters, a 2450m three-year-old monte for 150,000 euros which highlights the biggest day of the year at the northern Basse-Normandie city. Bird Parker, a son of Ready Cash, is equally at home in the bike or under saddle, being a group two monte winner and a runner-up under harness in several major group races including the Prix Emmanuel Marghouty and Prix Maurice Gheest. With top monte rider Yoann Lebourgeois engaged, Bird Parker was paying very short 3/2 odds early Tuesday while his stable mate, the filly Bomba was at 4/1. By Goetmals Wood, a noted under saddle sire, Bomba has won three of her six monte starts, including the prestigious group two Prix Ali Hawas but gallops have proven costly in her other two group outings and handicappers will have been wary of this. Splitting the two Allaire charges in the market is Fabrice Souloy's nice filly Beauty Turgot, the winner of the Prix Holly du Locton under saddle and a placegetter in the bike in the Prix Une de Mai, the biggest race for 2YO fillies in France. Pascal Daulier's Babar des Brouets, a son of Giant Cat, is also coming in for early support having run a fourth placing in one of his two group two monte starts. The others in the market are Blooma d'Heripre (Rolling d'Heripre) a three-win colt trained by Gregory Thorel who is making his first group start and Brise de l'Alba (Quido du Goutier) a filly from William Bigeon's barn who was runner up in the Prix Holly du Locton. There is a second monte of note on the card with the Prix Henri Balliere, over the same distance for 4YOs, but for 120,000 euros and graded Group II. With Roddy Kuiper's top-ranked filly A Nous Deux missing from the event, Ake Kristoffersson's Love You stallion Airport (Love Yo) who was a gallant second in both the last two group montes is under even money to win this. He will be ridden again by Eric Raffin. Hughes Levesque's Cygnus d'Odyssee mare Astree de l'Iton is making her first group start after a couple of impressive wins under saddle in lower grade races is the next best supported in the market, and has Yoann Lebourgeois on board for the trip. Alexandre Abrivard will be on board talented Hasting mare Agrippine, which is trained by Laurent Claude Abrivard and handicappers are hoping she can find the form that saw her second in the group one Prix de Vincennes, after several DQs in recent outings. The 5YO crop play a supporting role to the Group One classique Criterium des 4 Ans with two Group two races, both worth 120,000 euros, the Prix Jean Gauvreau a monte over 2175m and the Prix Albert Demarcq an "atelle" or under harness race over 2850m, sandwiching the marquee event of the day. Jean-Philippe Dubois' super mare Vision Intense is a 4/3 on favourite on early markets for the Prix Jean Gauvreau which is race 5 on Saturday's card, as she makes a return to under saddle racing after a meritorious third in the group two Prix Henri Levesque in the bike to Voltigeur de Myrt, who is second-favourite in the other 5YO group race today. Vision Intense will be ridden as usual by Nathalie Henry and any placing in the race will push the daughter of Prodigious over the 800,000 euro mark in earnings. You will get good odds on any of the others, should she go into one of her occasional gallops as she did in costly fashion in the first of the monte group ones this year, the Prix des Centaures, which was won by Valdice de Mars , who lines up again here. Loic Groussard's daughter of Lynx de Bellouet will be ridden by champion jockey Yoann Lebourgeois and was paying 7/2 on the early market. Powerful player Ecurie des Charms stallion Valroy (First de Retz) and Yves Dreux's Varum Boy (Baccarat du Pont), who is making his first group start after solid recent form, are also well supported at 3/1 and 4/1 respectively. As mentioned previously Voltigeur de Myrt is the early 2/1 second-favourite for the Prix Albert Demarcq, for the same age group, but under harness, which is race 8 on the card and has drawn a closely matched field of nine. The winner of last year's Criterium des 4 Ans was super last time out notching his first win since last year's classique for trainer Roberto Donati and is a good chance here with a similar performance, with the other big guns of the generation such as Village Mystic, Victoire and Vanika du Ruel bypassing the race. Edging him in the favouritism is Eric Lambertz' Viking de Val (3/2) who was second in the Prix Henri Levesque, but Villeroi (9/4), whose baby sister Agneska is in the Criterium des 4 Ans, and two sons of Jag de Bellouet in Vulcain de Vandel (5/2) and Very Nice Marceau (3/1) also well supported. Gros Bios-based Dutchman Ron Kuiper looks to have a rising monte star in his stable in A Nous Deux who heads the field in the 120,000 euro Group two Prix Rene Palyart at Vincennes tonight. The mare is owned by legendary French breeder Jean Pierre Dubois and is one of two in the race by Goetmals Wood. The well-travelled Kuiper was introduced to the Fabulous Gros Bois training centre when a stable lad for Stefan Hultman, the trainer for the powerful Travkompianet Stall AB, when they would rent boxes of Pierre Vercruysse in the early 2000s. Now established in France on his own account, Hultman's stable star Maharajah is still a regular winter visitor to Kuiper's training barn as Hultman and Kuiper maintain a close relationship. A Nous Deux is coming off a last start fourth in the Prix Beaumanoir a 4-5YOs event at Vincennes, after beating her own age group in the last two montes that have been contested for the A-generation, the Prix Louis le Bourg and Prix de Pardieu. These were her first two attempts at group racing, and she will be once again partnered with top rider Nathalie Henry, and they are at short odds to go three from three. His likely toughest opposition comes from ex-pat Swede's Ake Kristoffersson's Airport, a Love You stallion from the powerful Ecurie des Charmes. Airport, was a close second in the Prix Louis le Bourg after leading for most of the journey and then ran down the field under harness in the Prix Phaeton, his first attempt at group racing in the bike. Eric Raffin will be up for the stallion's second group race under saddle, who looks bred for the part. Airport is from the same family as top monte specialist Quarry Bay, a runner-up in the Prix de Cornulier. Laurent Claude Abrivard is represented by the well supported Agrippine a mare by Hasting who will be ridden by Alexandre Abrivard. She was a runner up in the group one monte, Prix de Vincennes but has galloped in her last two monte races and was a distant ninth last start in the Prix Phaeton under harness. Pierre Coignard lines up group two Prix Camille de Wazierres winner Al Capone Jet a son of Jag de Bellouet who will be ridden by Matthieu Abrivard. He has galloped both times since his prestigious group two win in January. Asana Trembladaise, a well performed daughter of Kuadro Wild steps out with trainer Anthony Dollion in the saddle. A runner up in the group one Saint-Leger Des Trotteurs last year, she had two group two monte wins in a row at the start of the winter meeting, but has been unplaced in three starts since the start of the year. Thierry Duvaldestin has entered Aquarelle de Fael a daughter of Look de Star who, has a group two placing under saddle, and will be ridden by Franck Nivard. It will be a case of the Dubois' second generation stars battling it out for favouritism in the Prix Gaston De Wazieres (G2) a 120,000 euros preparatory race for the Criterium des 4 Ans, over 2100m in Good Friday racing at the Temple du Trot in France. Jean-Philippe Dubois will have son Julien on board favourite Atlessima, a daughter of Rocklyn - a son of Love You, the world champion sire owned and raced by the clan's patriarch, Jean-Pierre Dubois. Atlessima was second in the Prix Paul Leguerney (G2), which was the first prep, earlier in the month. She is already a group one winner, although under saddle in the Prix de Vincennes. Vying for favouritism is the winner of the Prix Paul Leguerney (G2), Africaine, who is owned and driven by Jean-Pierre's younger son Jean Etienne Dubois . She is a daughter of French-bred sire Oiseau de Feux, an unheralded former European Derby winner who was second in both the Elitloppet and Lotteria, the Premier races of Sweden and Italy respectively. The pair were the first two favourites the last time out and the public have stuck with them in early markets. The well-credentialled Avila a daughter of Ready Cash in the care of the champion's former trainer Thierry Duvaldestin is third inearly betting despite not having risen to the heights she showed as a juvenile when she won two group one races. Also getting support is Alesia d'Atout, a mare by in the stable of Dominique Mottier, who won the Prix Charles Tiercelin (G2) in January and was third favourite in the Prix Paul Leguerney. The proudly French-bred chestnut Prince Gede (83% French trotter) was a wonderful performer on the track (a winner of the French triple crown marathon Prix de Paris no less) and his daughter from his first crop Athena de Vandel has certainly inherited a lot of his traits, and will also come in for plenty of support. Philippe Allaire will have his 20-year-old daughter Elisabeth, a rising star in the monte ranks, on board top filly Bomba as he takes a two-prong approach to the group two Prix Hemine an under saddle event for 3YOs at Vincennes on Saturday. For Mme Allaire, this is her first official group two event, though she has ridden in several 100,000 euro events and is very experienced despite her youth. She has had 29 rides this year for 5 victories, her last being at Cherbourg on March 30. Indeed, Mme Allaire had two wins in successive days at the Temple du Trot in mid January. Her father Philippe Allaire's other entrant, rising star Ready Cash colt Bird Parker will have his top rider Yoann Lebourgeois on board, the usual pilot of Bomba, having ridden her in two three wins in her six career starts to date. Bird Parker, named after the US Jazz great, has proven a hit at both trotting disciplines having won the group two monte Prix Felicien Gauvreau for 3YO colts at VIncennes on February 28, and was second in the under harness top race for 2YOs last last year, the Prix Emmanuel Margouty (Gr2) and followed that up with the big finale for the crop, the Prix Maurice De Gheest (G2). He will be favourite in the event which will be ridden over the Vincennes sprint distance of 2175m. Bomba who is by outstanding sire of ridden horses Goetmals won the fillies monte as the Winter Meeting drew to a close, and has been the dominant filly of this generation under saddle. She has only faced the colts on one occasion, when she narrowly went down to Baggio du Châtelet in Prix Cholet, in January. She was the only filly in that race, and the other five colts followed her in . Nicolas Raimbeaux's Baggio du Châtelet has proven a very good horse, convincingly winning the group two Prix Edouard Marcillac (G2) at Vincennes in mid February. Matthieu Abrivard will be aboard the son of Pierre Comte de Montesson's former champion Niky who stands at Haras de Sassy. Niky who won among other races, the aforemention Prix Emmanuel Maghouty and Prix Maurice De Gheest, and also the prestigious B race the Prix de Belgique is a millionaire earning son of Viking's Way and therefore a great-grandson of US sire Bonefish,. Another entrant Brooklyn Bridge ran second to Baggio du Chatelet in the Prix Edouard Marcillac and was also the runner-up to Bird Parker in the Prix Felicien Gauvreau. The talented son of Quatre Juillet will have the experience of Franck Nivard aboard for trainer Franck Leblanc. Grand international mare Roxane Griff (9f Tenor de Baune-Julia Mesloise-Sancho Panca) easily dispatched 10 rivals to win today's Gr. II £120,000 Prix Theophille Lallouet at Paris-Vincennes. Reined by Eric Raffin for trainer Sebastian Guarato, and owner Ecurie Griff, the 2014 Prix de Cornulier winner secured her 18th career victory for earnings of £2,303,118 over 2700 meters. The 9/10 favorite sat a comfortable second much of the way before moving to the front with 600 meters to go, leaving the field in the cinders. Rapide du Digeon, the Damien Bonne handled campaigner, held second with Remember Jihem third in the 1.13.5kr timed event. Quarry Bay was disqualified for an early miscue. Italy's Nene'Degi Ulivi was fourth for Alexandre Abrivard. Three other graded events were on the card along with several supporting races of note. The Gr. II Prix Phaeton for £120,000 over 2850 meters, went to 29/1 upsetter Athos Elfes (4m Ganymede-Lazio du Bourg-Tadzio de la Motte) with trainer Joel Van Eeckhaute driving. He scored in 1.13.7kr for his fifth career win and now earnings of £157,680. Astor du Quenne was second for Eric Raffin (trainer Guarato) at 2/1 with 3/2 favorite Aldodes Champs third for trainer/driver Mathieu Abrivard. The Gr. The 2.7/1 winner scored in 1.15.2kr, with a strong final 1500 meters, for her third career win and £142,820 earnings. Ten rivals followed with 2.2/1 favorite Atlessima (4f Rocklyn-Noblessima-Goetmals Wood) second with Julien Dubois up for Ecurie Victoria Dreams and trainer Philippe Moulin. Athena de Vandel ended third. The Gr. III Prix de Saintes (three year-olds) for £60,000 went to Bijou de Spinelly for trainer/driver/owner Yves Dreux. The three-year-old son of Diamant Gede-Nana Loving Fair-In Love With You, won for the third time, increasing earnings to £80,300 in his young career. He scored at 5.2/1 odds by storming home to defeat favorite Buako des Angles and Franck Ouvrie in 1.13.8kr over the 2100 meter autostart course. Bioness was third for Julien Dubois at 9/1, a good effort for the son of Sam Bourbon. The Quinte+ (£6.8 million jackpot) was on the Paris-Vincennes card in the form of the Prix du Treport (£85,000, 2700 meters, European). Reinsman Christophe Martens confidently steered Italy's Olmo Holz (6m Uronometro-Veuve du Kras-Park Avenue Joe) to victory in 1.14.1kr to secure his 14th career win for £401,846. Vincent Martens trains the consistent winner, owned by Frans Delmote, as they humbled 13 rivals at 5.4/1 odds. Italy's Oropuro Bar (6m Love You-Ubatuba Oaks) was second for trainer Marco Smorgon and teamster Pierre Vercruysse. Reine Helene, a daughter of Instant Gede, was third for Pierre Levesque with another Italy contestant, Moses Rob (a son of Ganymede), fourth for Andrea Guzzinati. The Prix d'Aubusson for £55,000 (2100 meters autostart) was also an exciting race with the win to 22/1 Red Red Red (6f Offshore Dream-Extreme Lady-Meadow Gallant) reined, from off the pace, by Pierre Vercruysse for trainer Sofia Aronsson. Red Red Red scored in 1.11.3kr for her eighth career win for £221,494 as she defeated Uvevering du Gite and Damien Bonne. That 65/1 outsider was placed second ahead of favorite Up The Green and J-M Bazire, that was second placed third. The pace was fast from the outset in this one as they reached the 1500 meters to go pole in 1.07.9kr. The pedigree of Red Red Red is of interest, she being by Prix d'Amerique winner Offshore Dream (second dam Tableau by Joie de Vie-Seascape Lobell) from a Meadow Gallant (Super Bowl-Quiet Elegance-Speedy Crown) mare. She's 29% French trotteur; 71% standardbred. by Thomas H. Hicks, for Harnesslink.com
