Arthur George Shaw, 77, of Jensen Beach, Fla., died June 5, 2016, in Stuart, Fla. He was born June 16, 1938, in Milwaukee, Wis., to the late Arthur (a harness racing driver) and Letty Shaw of Elkhorn Wis. Mr. Shaw graduated from Elkhorn High School then went on to Bradley University and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, where he graduated, and then on to Northern Illinois University with a law degree. He followed in his dad's footsteps and became a leading Standardbred driver, driving horses from New York to California. He was one of the top driver/trainers in the country. He was also one of the first single importers to import Standardbreds from New Zealand to the United States. Mr. Shaw met his wife DeDe and they were married February 21, 1971. In a few short years they brought a baby into the world their son, A.G. In 1980 Mr. Shaw was introduced to a company called Shaklee. He started building a Shaklee business with DeDe and together they exploded the business into the largest Shaklee business in the world. Later on in life he missed the racehorse environment so he ventured into Standardbred stallions. This is where he pioneered the dual hemisphere Standardbred stud service in the U.S. where in the off season he would fly the horses to New Zealand to stand for stud. This has now become common practice. He own and shuttled the great stallion In The Pocket to New Zealand and this stallion has changed the breed Down Under producing outstanding sires and racehorses and now broodmares. In The Pocket has produced the great stallions Christian Cullen and Courage Under Fire. In The Pocket and his son Christian Cullen have dominated the broodmare sires list in New Zealand over the last three years. In The Pocket is the current leading Broodmare sire in Australia. He and DeDe got into quarter horses and traveled the country together showing their horses, winning the top shows in the country including the NSBA World and Congress Championship. He was on the Board of Directors for the Florida Quarter Horse Association. He served on many boards over the years, including the Shaklee Masters Executive Committee as chairman multiple times. He was on the Nation Snaffle Bit Association. He was also on The Small Businessman board where he worked with Senator McCain. He was on the Illinois Harness Driver Association and he co-chaired the Heart Association for Martin County, Fla. His life was full of experience and he lived life. He also lived to make life better for others. He is survived by his wife, DeDe; son, A.G. (Maureen); and grandchildren, Tyler and Ella. USTA Communications Department

Harness racing sales are exactly the same as any other sale in that prices are driven by the demand for the product against the supply of the product. At the upcoming Bathurst Gold Crown Sale there are only four Sportswriters in the whole sale and as a keenly sought after stallion at the best of times, Sportswriter can expect his four yearlings to attract a premium on sale day. With his first crop only half way through their four year old careers in Australia, Sportswriter has already produced 114 winners to date with stakes topping $2,700,000 and rising.  Sportswriter has produced 79 winners from his first crop of 157 foals for a percentage of over 50% which is right up there with the very best. We thought we would have a brief look at the pedigrees of a couple of the Sportswriters for sale at Bathurst. Lot 18 A  -  Colt by Sportswriter from Marysia 1:57.8 By In The Pocket A half brother to six winners including the very talented Mr Bojangles 1:56 ($138,509) and Myouri 1:57.1 ($106,699) while half sisters in Medea and Tyalla have already produced Our Pacquiao 1:52.9 ($152,126) and Baccarat 1:56.3 ($94,133). The second dam Aberfeldy left ten winners including the brilliant colt Reba Lord 1:56 ($384,880) and the champion filly of her year in Megaera 1:56.8 ($250,646) Aberfeldy won the New Zealand Broodmare Excellence Award in 2001 which is a good indication of what a great broodmare she was. Lot 42  -  Filly by Sportswriter from Wicker Bella 2:00.8 ($11,075) This filly is the eighth foal from Wicker Bella and to date she has produced five winners while her three year old daughter had her first start just recently and looks an early winner and is on course to give her dam six winners. Padabing Stride ($57,180) is the best colt from Wicker Bella to date while Bella Jam Jam ($32,530) who won a heat of the Bathurst Gold Tiara and ran second in the final is the best filly. Two half sisters to Wicker Bella in Wicker Maker and Wicker Bee have produced some nice horses such as Wicker Blue ($70,902), Mammals Maker ($40,813), Tulhurst Vee Jay ($39,929) and Mammals Rocket ($38,870) Wicker Bella has done a great job in the broodmare barn and it is hard to envisage a Sportswriter not adding to that record. With only the four yearlings available in the whole sale, the Sportswriters look sure to attract plenty of attention this Sunday. Harnesslink Media

Every year as the yearling sales approach, the Harnesslink staff have always have a discussion pre sale about who they think could be one of the "sleepers" of the sale that year. It has always been an interesting exercise in the past but one that we have taken a lot more seriously this year. We have come up with half a dozen candidates at the Australasian Classic Yearling Sale at Karaka on February 22nd who we think may slip under the buyers guard due to a variety of circumstances and we have found it hard to separate them. In the end we decided to highlight one of the fillies that really took our eye but who we also thought may struggle to reach her value. Lot 101 is Willshewin, a filly by Auckland Reactor from the three win In The Pocket mare in Willowbrook. She is the third foal from her dam whose oldest foal is the three year old Will Desire who has already won a race from a handful of starts. The grand dam Birchbrook has produced four winners from just six foals including Charger 1:59.3 ($51,167) but he is  the only colt of racing age she has produced to date which is never helpful. The third dam is the very successful broodmare in Going Royce who has produced eleven winners from just twelve foals including the outstanding pacer Tribute 1:54.8 ($587,772) and is the grand dam of the rising Victorian star Mundaka 1:54.8 ($145,713) It has been a very successful family over a long period of time but in our opinion the lack of colts from the first two dams has hurt Willowbrook in the sales arena. However we were quite taken with the Willshewin photos and think she is a lovely filly. Like a lot of the Auckland Reactors she is nicely put together, she has got a bit of size about her and all the early reports that we have had from the breakers on the Auckland Reactors have been excellent. So we came to the conclusion that Willshewin had a lot more to offer than it appears at first glance. Weather the buyers see it like that, we will know on February 22nd at Karaka. Harnesslink Media

When Direct Scooter's son In The Pocket was first shuttled into New Zealand in the mid 1990s, one of the first comments from breeders with knowledge of the North American scene was don't go near a filly by either Direct Scooter or any of his sons. They had acquired a terrible reputation in North America for not trying and a 50% discount was available to breeders if they bred a filly by Direct Scooter in the Northern Hemisphere. Of course In The Pocket put that bogey man to rest in year one with the brilliant filly Under Cover Lover 1:51.8 ($864,923) but the stigma around the Direct Scooter line and fillies has never really gone away in some quarters. Most of the fillies associated with the Direct Scooter line down under have a reputation for getting 'hot' at times but that hasn't stopped them producing some outstanding fillies and mares in the last few years. Mach Three took over from In The Pocket as Direct Scooters flag bearer down under a few years back and has produced a string of fillies of the highest class in the last few seasons which has earned the son of Matts Scooter a belated acknowledgement that he is a top filly sire in his own right. In North America he has had such standouts as Money On My Wheel1:49.6 ($1,705,434), Mach You And Me 1:50.2 ($800,819) and the two top three-year-old fillies in 2015, Solar Sister 1:50.3s ($769,028) and Wrangler Magic 1:50.2s ($737,040), while in New Zealand we have Venus Serena 1:52.1 ($796,397), Joyfuljoy 1:51.6 ($480,442), Millwood Meg 1:53.5 ($336,795) and Supersonic Miss 1:54.1 ($308,517) to name just a few. There are only half a dozen Mach Three fillies in the Australasian Classic Yearling Sale this year at Karaka on February 22nd and we thought that Lot 69, Jersey Bay ticked all the boxes for us. The third foal from the former outstanding age group performer in Pullover Brown 1:56.7 ($311,937) who won the New Zealand Oaks, Victoria Oaks and Australian Oaks at three, Jersey Bay is a full sister to the very promising Runaway Bay 1:53.7 ($77,723) Not only was Pullover Brown a star on the track, but she has a pedigree straight out of the top drawer as well. She is a full sister to the brilliant Montecito 1:49.4 ($527,559) and a half sister to Against The Wind 1:59 who is the dam of Pass Them By 1:51.4 ($276,348) The third dam Precious Dina won eight in New Zealand and is the grand-dam of the brilliant racemare Flight South 1:1:56.3 ($290,766) who won The Auckland Cup, so there is no shortage of quality fillies and mares close up in the pedigree. Jersey Bay herself is a typical Mach Three in type which was another big plus for us. On breeding and type, Jersey Bay should attract a lot of buyer interest at Karaka in a months time. Harness racing breeding enthusiasts are always looking at those golden breeding crosses which seem to have a big advantage on the track. One of the most obvious in recent years is the cross of the champion sire Bettor's Delight over an In The Pocket mare. That 'Golden Cross ' has numbers are mind boggling for not only producing so many winners but streams of elite level colts and fillies. Colts such as Gold Ace 1:52 ($1,247,953), Bettor's Strike 1:55.7 ($890,201),Texican 1:50.1 ($602,154), Flaming Flutter 1:53.9 ($544,665), Dream Out Loud 1:48.8 ($491,026), Ohoka's Bondy 1:53.6 ($388,148), Maxim 1:55.9 ($357,354) and Mossdale Conner 1:51.7 ($328,317) have all done a great job on the track as have fillies such as Kate Perry 1:53.6 ($396,158), Dancing Diamonds 1:57.8 ($343,276), Linda Lovegrace 1:54.8 ($244,973), (A)Willow 1:55.9 ($222,217) and Delightful Dana 1:54.5 ($145,764) to mention just a few. The total number of winners bred in New Zealand on this 'Golden Cross' to date is 118 while another 43 have qualified. More and more Bettor's Delight mares who have an In The Pocket dam have yearlings that  are showing up at the yearling sales. One Bettor's Delight mare bred on this cross to have already done the job is Delightful Dale whose first foal is the very smart three year old Shandale 1:56.7 ($93,676) who is by Art Major. Lot 13 at this years Australasian Classic Yearling Sale at Karaka is a full sister to Shandale named Lorna Jane and comes from a great juvenile family. The dam of Delightful Dale was the former smart In The Pocket two year old Dale Elinor TT 1:57.2 ($59,299) who is a full sister to Karen Donna, the dam of Kate Perry 1:53.9 ($396,158) as well as this years very promising three year old Cash N Flow 1:55.6 ($49,471) The third dam of Lorna Jane is none other than the former champion age group filly in Megaera 1:56.8 ($250,646) Whichever way you look at it, Lorna Jane has a lot of things going for her via her maternal family and would have to have a high residual value at the end of her racing career. With the way the harness racing stallion business is these days, it is becoming harder and harder for the home grown stallions to break into the lucrative market that is dominated by the shuttle stallions from North America. Breeders have access to the very best from North America and that means the local stallion has a huge challenge when going to stud. Christian Cullen proved he was up to the mark in his prime but few others have made it to the top of the sires list down under. The jury is still out on Changeover with the son of In The Pocket churning out plenty of nice horses but he badly needs one or two genuine stars to lift him into the elite level of stallions. Another local who is attempting to break the grip of the Northern Hemisphere stallions is the son of Mach Three in Auckland Reactor. In an attempt to give him a genuine shot at challenging the elite stallions, his management team set his fee at $3,000 and in his first two years he served huge books of 213 mares in year one and 156 in year two in New Zealand and he will serve about 100 again in year three. Auckland Reactor has also done really well in Australia with 182 in year one followed by 210 in year two and is on track to serve about 220 again this year. It's long been accepted that for a stallion to establish himself, he needs to have the numbers on the ground and Auckland Reactor has certainly been given the opportunity with the numbers he has coming through. Auckland Reactors first lot of foals hit the yearling sales this year with five entered at Auckland and twenty four in Christchurch. One that caught our eye was the colt Jordan's Jury, the first foal from the former smart racemare in Georgia's Jury 1:58.7 ($59,871) who is being offered as Lot 29 at the Australasian Classic Yearling sale at Karaka on February 22nd. Georgia's Jury ran 2nd in the Sires Stakes at three behind the champion Adore Me and all up only had 22 starts for 5 wins and 7 placings. The dam of Georgia's Jury is the racewinning Christian Cullen mare in Van Seraa whose first three foals old enough to race have all been winners. Apart from Georgia's Jury, she has also produced Raesawinner 1:56 ($88,351) and the three year old Van Mara 1:58.2p who won his maiden race at Alexandra Park in December. This branch of the Rosalie family has been prominent since the very speedy racemare Good Going went to stud in the 1980s. Winners have flowed from that time with two of the best being Tribute 1:54.9 ($610,993) and Easy On The Eye 1:54 ($461,580) and that flow of winners shows no sign of slowing down. When In The Pocket mares started to go to stud in big numbers, they immediately had a major impact on the harness racing broodmare charts. In The Pocket,  who was known for producing great gaited, high speed progeny who were also known to get a bit hot, were a perfect match for two of our leading sires in Bettor's Delight and Art Major. The resulting progeny tended to have the gait and speed from their dam sire with the attitude and demeanor from Art Major and Bettor's Delight which quickly became a hot cross. It should be no surprise then that another grandson of Direct Scooter in Mach Three is starting to have a similar impact. Very similar to In The Pocket in that his progeny can get a bit hot, Mach Three is starting to show up in the pedigrees of a lot of promising horses. Al Raza 1:52.1 ($149,997), Pacquiao 1:52.9 ($152,126), Eyre Crusher 1:55.7 ($94,123), Darcee 1:50.4 ($81,583), Classie Brigade 1:55.2 ($51,931) and Statham (5 wins from ten starts) are just a few of the progeny of Mach Three mares that have shown up in the last twelve months and with the bigger numbers of progeny coming on stream, his influence will just continue to grow. One of the two year olds that has really impressed in this years Young Guns Series at Alexandra Park is the Art Major juvenile Vasari who has already won a Young Guns heat and will start one of the favourites in the final in March. Vasari is the second foal from the Mach Three mare Thebestamancanget who comes from a very successful branch of the Black Watch family. Thebestamancanget is from the former top age group filly in Ciccio Star 1:58.4 ($102,499) and is a half sister to nine winners including such smart types as Zenthura 1:56.5 ($117,705), Major Star 1:53.2 ($114,044) and Idancedallnight 1:59.3 ($103,655) Vasari was sold for $107,500 to Lincoln Farms at the 2015 Australasian Classic Yearling sale and his half sister is to be offered as lot 103 at the 2016 Australasian Classic Yearling sale at Karaka on February 22nd. The yearling filly is named Nolessthanperfect and is a daughter of the leading New Zealand sire in Bettor's Delight and as you can see from the photo she is a standout type. Like a lot of top fillies she has a masculine appearance and with Vasari going great guns as a two year old, Nolessthanperfect will attract a lot of attention on sale day. Since the mid 1990s, the harness racing breeding scene in Australasia has been home to a resurgence in the Direct Scooter siring line and it shows no signs of tapering off anytime soon. From Direct Scooter line stallions such as  In The Pocket to Christian Cullen to Courage Under Fire to Mach Three, breeders have enjoyed access to some of the best siring talent available. Last years results announced the arrival of another descendant of Direct Scooter in Australasia in Somebeachsomewhere who had a sensational season down under with the brilliant Menin Gate and Waikiki Beach who each dominated their respective age groups in Australia. Somebeachsomewhere has dominated age group racing in North America in three of the last four years and is currently over $1,300,000 ahead of Bettor's Delight on the two year old siring charts this year. With Somebeachsomesomewhere only available via frozen semen and in limited supply, the market was wide open for a well performed son of Somebeachsomewhere to stand in Australasia. Alabar Bloodstock have taken the bull by the horns and have brought in the very well credentialed Sunshine Beach 1:47.8 ($977,438) From the first crop of Somebeachsomewhere in 2010, Sunshine Beach is from a very strong maternal family which keeps pumping out those elite level horses. The dam of Sunshine Beach is the unraced Artsplace mare Light Up. Apart from Sunshine Beach, Light Up has also produced horses of the quality of Safe Harbor 1:50.1 ($549,180), Warrawee Flare 1:50.3 ($524,095) and Western Moonlight 1:52.3 ($366,091 while one of her daughters in Warrawee Cammy has already produced Machal Jackson 1:50.1 ($562,715) The grand-dam is the smart Jate Lobell mare Lights On 1:54 (318,777) who has left eight winners at stud including the very smart two year old After Life 1:51.4 ($659,328) The third dam is the outstanding Flying Bret racemare Enroute 1:53.4 ($753,768) who apart from Lights On has also produced Take Flight 1:53.2 ($602,443), Flight Plan 1:50.1 ($394,251) and Bedeviled 1:55.3($326,212) It is a pedigree full of winners with several $500,000+ earners close up in the pedigree so Sunshine Beach lacks nothing in the breeding department. Sunshine Beach on the track was hindered throughout his career by kidney and bladder stones but when free from pain he produced some outstanding performances. At two, he had a handful of starts, winning in 1:52.2, running second in the $110,000 Nassagaweya Stakes and having a best placed time of 1:50.4 in his heat of the Metro Pace. Treated extensively in the break between his two and three year old seasons, Sunshine Beach came out at three and showed what a high class colt he was. His best performance was undoubtedly in the $500,000 Battle Of Brandywine Final at Pocono where he beat the champion colt Captaintreacherous in a life time best of 1:47.4 Other notable performances at three included the $284,000 Progress Pace at Dover Downs in 1:50.3, a Bluegrass Stakes win at the Red Mile in 1:48.2 plus two placings behind Captaintreacherous in time honoured classics. One was a second placing in the $500,000 Breeders Crown Final by a neck in 1:49.2 and the other was a third in the $635,000 Meadowlands Pace Final in 1:48.4. Sunshine Beach faced the starter 20 times between May and December at three for eight wins and eight placings and over $900,000. In fourteen of those twenty starts Sunshine Beach broke the 1:50 barrier. The kidney and bladder stone issues came back to haunt Sunshine Beach in a big way at four and his form wasn't what it should have been. After he was retired, Sunshine Beach went on the operating table to remove the most humongous golf ball sized kidney stone you will ever see. For Sunshine Beach to have raced as well as he did with that stone annoying him every inch of the way is a testament to how genuine and tough he was. Standing in Canada in his first year at stud in 2015, Sunshine Beach was very well received by breeders, covering 135 mares at $5,000. With Alabar having set his fee at $4,000 in Australasia, Sunshine Beach would seem great value for money and it would surprise us if he didn't serve as least as many mares down under as he did in Canada during this past breeding season there. Memories of former New Zealand superstar pacer Christian Cullen will be revived when Chevrons Champion clashes with other talented fillies, including the brilliant Dodolicious, in the 2130m Clipsal Pace at Gloucester Park on Friday night. Chevrons Champion, part-owned, trained and driven by Nathan Turvey, will start from barrier four in a highly-competitive field of just five runners. After winning twice from nine starts in New Zealand for Cran Dalgety, Chevrons Champion has impressed greatly in Western Australia where her four starts have produced three wins and a second placing. She is by outstanding stallion Bettors Delight out of the unraced In The Pocket mare Dreamsaregold, a full sister to Christian Cullen, who amassed $1,249,150 in stakes from 22 wins and four placings from 31 starts in the 1990s. In 1998 his victories included the New Zealand Cup, Auckland Cup and Miracle Mile at Harold Park.         Dreamsaregold also is a half-sister to Kates First, who earned $624,023 from 19 wins and 19 placings from 65 starts. Dodolicious, trained by Greg and Skye Bond, is on the doorstep of a wonderful career after her first nine starts produced five wins and four seconds. She resumed after a spell  and made her first appearance as a three-year-old at Pinjarra on Monday of last week when she raced three wide early and then in the breeze before getting to the front 120m from the post and finishing second to Scoobys Delight (1.53.5) over 1684m. That was her first outing since she set the pace and finished second to the fast-finishing gelding Sprinter in the Golden Slipper at Gloucester Park in mid-July. She is sure to appreciate competing against her own sex this week. Baby She Rocks, trained and driven by Kaiden Hayter, and the Sonia Zucchiatti-trained The Spinster also have plenty of ability. They are excellent frontrunners.  Baby She Rocks has led and won at Gloucester Park and Pinjarra in her five-start career and The Spinster was a smart all-the-way Pinjarra winner two starts ago before setting the pace and finishing third behind Scoobys Delight and Dodolicious on the same track a week later. It is not often in harness racing that a great sire doesn't go on to become a great broodmare sire although the degree of that success can vary every now and again. In The Pocket has done in the broodmare paddock exactly what he did as a sire, having already won the overall title of leading broodmare sire and being the leading pacing broodmare sire in the season just concluded.  In The Pocket has been first or second on the New Zealand broodmare siring charts for the last five years but is under real pressure going forward to hold off the challenge of one of his sons in Christian Cullen. Christian Cullen has made rapid progress up the broodmare siring charts in the last five years as more of his mares are bred from, rising from 27th in 2011 to third overall last season and a close second on the pacing list to In The Pocket.  The rise has been startling and Christian Cullen has the same potential to click with champion sires Bettors Delight and Art Major as his sire In The Pocket has done. Mares by Christian Cullen have only produced 605 foals three year old or older to date which has put him at a major disadvantage against the likes of Holmes Hanover and In The Pocket whose foal numbers are counted in the thousands not hundreds. However as more and more Christian Cullen mares move into the breeding barn, those numbers will change quickly. This season there are 180 two year olds in New Zealand from Christian Cullen mares and there are also 184 yearlings from Christian Cullen mares on the ground so he will quickly catch up numbers wise over the next few years. When you look at the quality of the racehorses his mares are producing, it is no surprise that he has moved up the charts so quickly. Horses of the class of Ohoka Punter 1:51.1p ($599,013) - Te Kawau 1:54.3p ($131,674) - Express Stride 1:54.3p ($132,395) alongside two of last season's standout two year olds in Lazarus 1:52.9 ($265,562) and Chase The Dream 1:53.1p ($212,026) have helped establish Christian Cullen as an elite broodmare sire. One thing of note is that all five of the horses quoted above are sons of Bettors Delight. The best performer produced by a Christian Cullen mare to date is of course Highview Tommy 1:55.2 ($1.021,904) who is also by Bettors Delight. Broodmare earnings in New Zealand have already topped the $6,000,000 mark while over the Tasman in Australia he is slightly ahead of that with $6,179,816 in earnings to date. Looking ahead to next years yearling sales, vendors with Bettors Delight progeny from Christian Cullen mares can expect their stock to be keenly sought after by buyers from both sides of the Tasman. Just over three years ago at the age of 89, harness racing owner Ron Hutchinson purchased his first racehorse, the then seven-year-old New Zealander, Barney Maguire which took 47 attempts to win its first race. On Sunday Ron, now 92 hopes to cheer home his veteran pacer to victory, a win that would see the rising 11-year-old maintain a perfect record on the Beaudesert turf track. Sunday is the Beaudesert Hibernian Club charity race day and it features a 10 race card, three harness races and seven thoroughbred races on the turf. The trots will be over a mile (1609m) starting in the home straight with the horses travelling a full circuit of the picturesque track. “The races are a real crowd pleaser,” deputy chairman of harness stewards Larry Wilson said. “Last year everyone loved seeing the trots here and I just hope the locals turn up early to watch so they don’t miss the harness racing action. The 10 race TAB card starts at 10.20am with the three harness races run before the fourth race, the first thoroughbred race at 11.55am. All races will be telecast on Sky Racing with the harness races on Sky 2, the first four gallops on Sky 1 and the last three gallops on Sky 2. Barney Maguire will start from gate three in the mobile start, race two, the Hygain Feeds Pace. Ron’s son Richard, a long time harness racing participant and breeding authority, is the trainer of Barney Maguire and said the pacer, the only horse he now trains at his Tamborine property, has really made a difference to his father’s life. “Dad has not been well lately but this horse is a real tonic for him,” Richard said. “He just just loves to watch him race and replays the races over (on the TV). “Hopefully we can both be at the track and see him win again on Sunday.” Barney Maguire may have the oldest owner in the race but he will be ably supported by one of the youngest drivers in the race, talented young gun Brittany Graham. Brittany is counting the days until she travels to the US for a month driving experience overseas, a prize she won for her high achievements in Queensland last year. With the knowledge of Barney Maguire’s grass track win, Brittany will sure to have the In The Pocket pacer in the firing line from go to whoa. “He is not a horse that you can bottle up, in fact if he cops to much shoving he will turn it up,” Richard said. “At Albion Park on Tuesday he copped a check and that was it but his previous form this month, a second and fourth placing at Redcliffe suggests that he is racing good enough to keep his perfect grass track record intact. The only other horse on the program with a Beaudesert win beside its name is Major Lefty which will start off the second row in the third race, The Ubet For the Thrill of It Pace (1609m). Major Lefty trained by Cristina Monte has been out of form the past few months but the Art Major seven-year-old gelding is more than capable of turning the form around on the grass. Charlie Cini who was in the cart for last year’s grass track win will again take the reins. Steamline Boy trained by the driver Steven Doherty looks the one to beat in this race, starting from the pole mark position. The eight-year-old Artesian gelding has won two of his past three starts with both wins at Redcliffe. Last year he showed a liking for the turf, finishing third on the Beaudesert track. The first of the three TAB harness races on the program starts at 10.20am with coverage of all three races on Sky Racing 2. Concession driver Trent Moffat teams up with Jimboomba local Gary Gerrard in this race to drive 4yo mare Latin For Lovable, a Redcliffe winner last month by David Aldred Related Links Fields for Beaudesert, Sunday 24 May 2015 Form guide for Beaudesert, Sunday 24 May 2015 Race programme for Beaudesert, Sunday 24 May 2015

When it comes to qualifying for the George Morton Levy Memorial Pacing Series championship, Heez Orl Black N is on the outside looking in. But thanks to a preliminary-round win last week at 13-1 odds, the gelding's chances of advancing to the lucrative harness racing final have improved significantly. Yonkers Raceway on Saturday hosts the last preliminary round of the Levy Series. Twenty of the top 21 horses in the standings were among the pacers entered, with the group divided into three seven-horse fields. P H Supercam, who is No. 1 in points and guaranteed a spot in the final thanks to winning all three of his previous Levy starts, is in the second division. He is joined there by Beach Memories, who is tied for second in the standings. Horses receive 25 points for each start in the series. First-place finishes are worth 50 points, with 25 points for second, 12 points for third, 8 points for fourth and 5 points for fifth. The top eight horses in the standings following Saturday's preliminary round will qualify for the final on April 25. The next eight horses are eligible for the consolation. The top 14 horses in the standings are separated by 71 points. The field for Saturday's third Levy division includes four horses - Take It Back Terry, Fat Mans Alley, Windsong Jack and Domethatagain - who are in the top nine. Michael's Power, who is tied for second in the standings, was not entered this week. Heez Orl Black N, who is 10th in the standings, drew post No. 1 in the first division. The all-black 7-year-old New Zealand-bred gelding, trained by Anita Vallee, trails Sapphire City by four points for the eighth spot in the standings. Sapphire City drew post three in the same Levy division as Heez Orl Black N while Polak A, who is seventh in the standings, got post five. Bettor's Edge, who is 11th in the standings, three points behind Heez Orl Black N, received post No. 2. No other horses in the top 11 are in the first division. "With a good draw, I think we have a chance to hit the board and then we'll let the chips fall where they may," said Shaun Vallee, who owns Heez Orl Black N with Daniel Vlahakis' DPV Racing Stable. "I'm not wishing any of the other ones bad luck, but just hoping I have enough luck to get in." Vallee purchased Heez Orl Black N, a former stakes-winner in New Zealand, in October. Heez Orl Black N, a son of stallion In The Pocket out of the mare Cracker Kate, won 15 races and $182,615 competing Down Under. "When he was racing over there, his races were very consistent and very good races," said Vallee, who saw Heez Orl Black N while visiting friends in Australia. "I was just lucky they were willing to sell him. They had so many in the same class and were willing to sell him." In his first start this year, Heez Orl Black N finished third at the Meadowlands. He then was sent to Yonkers, where the half-mile oval suited his smaller build. He won his first two starts at The Hilltop before finishing second to P H Supercam in a conditioned race in late January. "After I raced him a couple starts, I thought that if he kept racing consistently that we could put him in the Levy," said Vallee, who drove Heez Orl Black N in his first nine starts. "But in the beginning, I wasn't that sure. After he won three or four races, I thought he might be alright in there and we gave him a chance. "He's average to smaller (size). That's his game, the half-mile (track). We'll give him a couple weeks off after the Levy and then he'll race mostly in overnights at Yonkers. That's a good spot for him. Unless he does real good in the Levy, then I might try to put him in other races. But I'm not so sure he'll be real good at the mile track against those other horses when they start going big miles." Heez Orl Black won last week with driver Brian Sears by one length over National Debt in 1:53.1. He also has two fourth-place finishes among four starts in the Levy. "He's versatile and he's all race horse on the track," Vallee said. "No matter where he is, he never stops trying. Even if he's in what you'd call an impossible spot, he's still trying to do it. That's a good sign." Heez Orl Black N Levy Standings (Top 20): 1. P H Supercam 225; T2. Beach Memories, Michael's Power, Take It Back Terry 200; T5. Fat Mans Alley, Windsong Jack 187; 7. Polak A 175; 8. Sapphire City 170; 9. Domethatagain 168; 10. Heez Orl Black N 166; 11. Bettor's Edge 163; 12. Lucan Hanover 162; 13. Frankies Dragon 158; 14. Mach It So 154; 15. YONKERS, NY, Saturday, April 11, 2015-Saturday night's fourth round of Yonkers Raceway's George Morton Levy Memorial Pacing Series, despite missing some old, familiar faces, played out in a trio of intriguing harness racing events. Pole-sitting Windsong Jack (Brian Sears, $6.20) won the opening, $50,000 division, getting by Mach it So (Tim Tetrick) late and edging way by a length-and-a-quarter in a season's-best 1:52.4. Mach's Beach Boy (Pat Lachance) was third. It was 9-5 favorite Bettor's Edge (Yannick Gingras) making the lead and setting sail through intervals of :27.2, :56.4 and 1:23.4. Eventually tackled by Mach it So, the leader broke in the final turn. Windsong Jack was able to extricate himself, then go past a stubborn Mach it So. For second choice Windsong Jack, a 5-year-old Santanna Blue Chip gelding trained by Jennifer Sabot for owner Little Bapa LLC, it was his second win in eight seasonal starts (1-for-4 in series) The exacta paid $19.80, with no triple wagering offered due to the short field Odds-on choice Take it Back Terry (George Brennan, $2.90) had few issues in the second division. Quarter-moving from post No. 2, "Terry" stole way a cheap second quarter (:27.1, :56.4), then easily held sway (1:25.2, 1:53.1) by a no-issues three-quarters of a length. A solid, first-up effort from Frankie's Dragon (Sears) found him getting second, with Fat Man's Alley (Jason Bartlett) third. For "Terry," a 6-year-old Western Terror gelding co-owned (as Burke Racing) by (trainer) Ron Burke, Weaver Bruscemi, Larry Karr and Phil Collura, he's now 4-for-12 this season (2-for-3 in series). The exacta paid $23.40, with the triple returning $84. The evening's final series event saw a contested front end involving Clear Vision (Gingras) and Lucan Hanover (Tetrick). The former rebuffed the advances of the latter (:26.3, :54.1), with 7-10 choice Michael's Power (Dan Dube) in behind. The early fractions made this a closer's contest, and after a 1:23 three-quarters, the back of the bus was heard from. A from-last Heez Orl Black N (Sears, $29.20), starting outside his five foes, prevailed in a hands-and-knees (:30.1) final quarter. He whipped another longshot in National Debt (Eric Carlson) by a length in 1:53.1. Lucan Hanover held third despite a brutal trip, while "Michael" wound up last. For fourth choice Heez Orl Black N, a 7-year-old Down Under In The Pocket gelding trained by Anita Vallee for co-owners Shaun Vallee and D P V Racing Stable, it was his fourth win in 11 '15 tries. The exacta paid $323, with the triple returning $1,457. It should be noted that P H Supercam and Beach Memories, sitting 1-2 in series points after three rounds, were both given this round off for good behavior, while Foiled Again, looking to regain his near-$7 million form, also was not entered. Series standings, through fourth leg...1-P H Supercam (225 points), 2t-Beach Memories (200), 2t-Michael's Power (200), 2t-Take it Back Terry (200), 5t-Fat Man's Alley (187), 5t-Windsong Jack (187), 7-Polak A (175), 8-Sapphire City (170). Finals for the Blue Chip Matchmaker and George Morton Levy Memorial Pacing Series are set for Saturday, Apr. 25 (purses for both TBA). Note that since no one took Saturday night's Pick 5, Monday's gimmick begins with a carryover of $4,361.40 ($10,000 guaranteed pool). The Raceway's live season continues Monday night (post time 7:10 PM), Tuesday (1 PM, second round of YR/SOA of NY Bonus Trotting Series), then Thursday through Saturday (all at 7:10 PM, with Matchmaker and Levy series continuing Fridays and Saturdays). Evening simulcasting available around all nighttime programs, with afternoon simulcasting daily. Frank Drucker

The first day of this years harness racing sales in Christchurch were held today and the contrast with yesterday in Auckland was quite marked. The top end looked after it self as it did in Auckland with four $100,000 sales on day one. The difference from Auckland was the middle market was no where near as strong as it was yesterday. Once again the top price was $200,000 and yet again it was for a Bettors Delight Colt. Named Bollinger he was consigned by Glenbrook Park Standardbreds of Mosgiel and is from the smart In The Pocket mare Asabella. The successful bidders were Emilio and Mary Rosarti who also took the highest priced filly home from Auckland. Bollinger Lot 174 Bollinger was the standout colt early in the day  but three other lots after him also hit six figures. The first of those was a real carbon copy of Christian Cullen in Lot 198. Named Circles, the Christian Cullen colt was from the smart Presidential Ball mare in Blackbird Fly and  was consigned by Norwegian Breeding Ltd and was sold to Terry Taylor of Pleasant Point for $100,000. Circles - Lot 198 The next $100,000 sale was not for a couple of hours after that when Lot 263 went through the ring. The upstanding son of Somebeachsomewhere from the In The Pocket mare Free As A Bird was keenly sought after by several buyers before Robert Dunn won the bidding duel when the price reached $100,000 The dam of Lot 198 Blackbird Fly and Lot 263 Free As A Bird are half sisters. Chicargo Styx - Lot 263 The last of todays lots to hit six figures was Lot 313 who was consigned by Ken and Anne Spicer. Named Wrangler, the son of Bettor's Delight is from a half sister to Venus Serena and was purchased by Ian Dobson of Christian Cullen fame. The bidding stalled for quite a while but then really took off and finished at $170,000. Wrangler - Lot 313 The sale overall had a healthy average of just over $27,000 for the lots sold on the day but the middle was held up by the Bettors Delights. The stallion averages were interesting as the figures below show: * Bettors Delight - 23 sold at an average of $56,108 * Christian Cullen - 12 sold at an average of $36,833 * Mach Three - 6 sold at an average of $32,666 * Art Major - 8 sold at an average of $24,937 The top priced trotting bred yearling on the day was Lot 204 and was consigned by Kevin Chapman of Amberley. Named Izmok, the colt by Muscles Yankee from Belle Galleon was keenly sought after by several buyers. The half brother to Stent and Arya was finally knocked down to the Charlie and Kaye Templeton of Invercargill for $90,000. The sale concludes with another 180 lots tomorrow. From the time In The Pocket hit the harness racing scene in New Zealand he has been a star. His first crop contained Christian Cullen 1:54.1 ($1,249,150) and Under Cover Lover 1:51.8 ($864,923)  while his second crop included the champion juvenile Courage Under Fire 1:54.2 ($1,551,941) The progeny of In The Pocket have won $18,250,055 in New Zealand and his broodmares have been an instant hit in the broodmare barn with $16,941,556 in the bank already and plenty more to come yet. One breeding cross that has produced some talented fillies in the last few years is that of Artsplace over a daughter of In The Pocket or vice versa. This cross has produced such talented types as Annie McGuire 1:53.2 ($280,060) and Exotic Lover 1:55.5 ($110,336) and has been seen a bit more after that initial success. In this years sales the cross is present in Lot 105 at the Australasian Classic Sale in Auckland. Fullofheart  is her name and she is a daughter of Artsplace from the In The Pocket mare Pocketfullofposies. Qualified but only lightly raced, Pocketfullofposies has already left three winners including the smart son of McArdle in Mickey McRooney 1:55.8 ($41,067) The grand dam is the five win Smooth Fella mare Jayvee 2:00.5 who has left seven winners to date including the outstanding grand circuit pacer Sovereign Hill 1:55.5 ($432,555) Black Reef 1:51.8 ($326,846) and Ohara 1:58.8 ($134,131) Half sisters to Pocketfullofposies have left such talented pacers such as Dartmoor 1:55.8 ($416,575) J Walker 1:58 ($173,291) and Bettor Dreams 1:54.6 ($172,542) The third dam is the New Zealand Broodmare Excellence Award winner in Aberfeldy who has done such an outstanding job in the broodmare barn. This is widely recognized as the strongest branch of the famed Black Watch family and with all the smart racehorses close up in the pedigree you can see why. Fullofheart ticks a lot of boxes being by Artsplace from an In The Pocket grand daughter of the brilliant broodmare Aberfeldy and should have plenty of residual value once she has finished racing. The Whitelock family from Palmerston North who are well known in New Zealand for producing a string of outstanding rugby players, also have a growing reputation in the harness racing industry with the family racing/breeding a string of elite level colts and fillies over recent times. One of their best performers in recent years was the outstanding Bettor's Delight filly Dancing Diamonds 1:57.8 who won nine races at two and three on her way to earning $343,276. She numbered the two and three year old PGG Sales Races among her victories. Her first foal, a colt by Rocknroll Hanover named Rock Diamonds is being sold at this years Australasian Classic Sale and is sure to attract strong interest from buyers. Rocknroll Hanover 1:48.6 ($2,754,038) needs no introduction as he has already left the winners of over $73,000,000 including such stars as Rocknroll Heaven 1:47.6 ($2,754,818) and A Rocknroll Dance 1:47.4 ($2,429,441) Dancing Diamonds is bred on the potent Bettor's Delight/In The Pocket cross, and has a brilliant pedigree to go with her race record. Her dam Asabella ($52,809) was a smart two and three year old herself  and aside from Dancing Diamonds has also produced Ohoka Bondy 1:53.6 ($388,148) and Code Red 1:55.1 ($132,639) This is the branch of the Rothschild 124 maternal family closely associated with Jim Dalgety who brought the fifth dam of Rock Diamonds in Bellajily back from North America in the early 1970s in foal to Most Happy Fella. Bellajily won a New Zealand Derby before going to America and Bellajily and her daughters left Jim Dalgety a string of top horses headed by the likes of Jovial Jeanie(9 wins), Happy Hazel 1:57.6 ($236,623) and Imagine That 1:57.1 ($415,289). Belajily was also a full sister to the brilliant racemare Van Glory whose daughters left us Undercover Lover 1:51.8 ($864,811) and Bettor Cover Lover 1:53.8 ($1,026,428) It has been a brilliant maternal family for well over 50 years and shows no signs of tapering off. If anything it appears to be going from strength to strength. Rock Diamonds has all the credentials to add yet further kudos to his brilliant maternal family. Harnesslink Media
