Lutfi Kolgjini reined Mosaique Face (5m Classic Photo-Iona LB-Supergill) to a convincing front-end win in the Volkswagen Sweden Cup Final, worth 500,000SEK ($76,000 US) to the winner. The winner recorded his 11th victory in 32 starts now for earnings of 5,524,230SEK ($800,000 US). Racing barefoot, after racing with shoes in his elim, Mosaique Face defended his post one start and forced lead-contending Beer Summit into a speed-miscue shortly after the start. Once done Kolgjini raced on the lead thereafter and held second finishing Francais du Gull (7m Jag de Bellouet-Tantiem Gull-Lindy Lane) In The Pocket for Erik Adielsson the rest of the way. O'Grady ended third in the race timed in 1.09.9kr, after the first 1000 meters in a rated 1.11kr. The winner was sharp and speedy through the line. Mosaique Face made a break in the recent Copenhagen Cup after shying at the white parade horse that was in the infield. Otherwise he too might be in the Elitloppet along with stablemate Raja Mirchi that could be a contender tomorrow, especially with the hot nature of the Kolgjini stable. The Sweden Cup is quite a race conducted this day before a huge, appreciative gathering at Solvalla. Solvalla Sweden Cup action began at 10:30am local time in Stockholm but the real action began later with the first two Sweden Cup eliminations, each with 100,000SEK awarded to the winners. Mosaique Face took the first test with a win by disqualification for trainer/driver Lutfi Kolgjini in 1.09.5kr over 1609 meters autostart. Timed in 1.10.2kr the pair defeated Beer Summit (USA), Traveling Man and Democrat. The 5YO crop play a supporting role to the Group One classique Criterium des 4 Ans with two Group two races, both worth 120,000 euros, the Prix Jean Gauvreau a monte over 2175m and the Prix Albert Demarcq an "atelle" or under harness race over 2850m, sandwiching the marquee event of the day. Jean-Philippe Dubois' super mare Vision Intense is a 4/3 on favourite on early markets for the Prix Jean Gauvreau which is race 5 on Saturday's card, as she makes a return to under saddle racing after a meritorious third in the group two Prix Henri Levesque in the bike to Voltigeur de Myrt, who is second-favourite in the other 5YO group race today. Vision Intense will be ridden as usual by Nathalie Henry and any placing in the race will push the daughter of Prodigious over the 800,000 euro mark in earnings. You will get good odds on any of the others, should she go into one of her occasional gallops as she did in costly fashion in the first of the monte group ones this year, the Prix des Centaures, which was won by Valdice de Mars , who lines up again here. Loic Groussard's daughter of Lynx de Bellouet will be ridden by champion jockey Yoann Lebourgeois and was paying 7/2 on the early market. Powerful player Ecurie des Charms stallion Valroy (First de Retz) and Yves Dreux's Varum Boy (Baccarat du Pont), who is making his first group start after solid recent form, are also well supported at 3/1 and 4/1 respectively. As mentioned previously Voltigeur de Myrt is the early 2/1 second-favourite for the Prix Albert Demarcq, for the same age group, but under harness, which is race 8 on the card and has drawn a closely matched field of nine. The winner of last year's Criterium des 4 Ans was super last time out notching his first win since last year's classique for trainer Roberto Donati and is a good chance here with a similar performance, with the other big guns of the generation such as Village Mystic, Victoire and Vanika du Ruel bypassing the race. Edging him in the favouritism is Eric Lambertz' Viking de Val (3/2) who was second in the Prix Henri Levesque, but Villeroi (9/4), whose baby sister Agneska is in the Criterium des 4 Ans, and two sons of Jag de Bellouet in Vulcain de Vandel (5/2) and Very Nice Marceau (3/1) also well supported. Sweden provides an opportunity for stayers to gain valuable UET Masters Series points at Orebro on Saturday night, also doubling as the last leg of the V75. Swedish Masterskap winner On Track Piraten off a 40 metre handicap to the front runners is the class runner in the race. The altered son of French stallion Kool du Caux, is a group one winner over a staying distance having won Germany's top race last year, the Grosser Preis Von Deutschland, at Hamburg over the 2720m distance. Hans R Stromberg's gelding is also the winner of the CL Mullers Memorial over 2640m at Jagersro and the Masterskap or Swedish Championships at Aby over the same distance, both races carrying group two status. His sire Kool de Caux was second in the Prix d'Amerique (2700m) but also had a good turn of speed with victories in the Group one Copenhagen Cup (2011m) and the Prix de France (2100m) in a stellar career in which he won 1.5 million euro and took a record of 1.09.8 (1.52.2MR). "The Pirate's" major opposition will come from the likes of last year's winner New Line a Danish-bred son of King Conch who was trained in the victory by Ake Svanstedt, who of course is now resident in the United States but has transferred the horse to son Anders' stable. New Line has true staying credentials, not only winning this event last year but placing in the Harper Hanovers Lopp, the staying test on Elitloppet weekend, and the Malmo Stads Pris, another 3km marathon. Another with claims is Mellby Viking, the royally bred son of Viking Kronos, who relishes the longer distance. He has a super French pedigree, being from the family of Romee, the foundation mare for a family which includes Prix du Cornulier winner Dream With Me, Indy de Vive, the sire of Ready Cash, Italian Derby winner Daguet Rapide - another highly successful sire - Lazio du Bourg, who won the Criterium des 3 Ans, and Giesolo de Lou, who won just shy of 2 million euro to name but a few. Mellby VIking is very lightly raced, with just 22 starts for 13 wins and two placings, but 3 of the wins are at this distance, and one suspects trainer Timo Nurmos has some choice French missions ahead for the six-year-old stayer who is off the 20m handicap. Porthos Amok is also one who could figure prominently. He is a son of Orlando Vici, a French sire whose son Un Mec D'Heripre is one of the rising stars in his native land. Orlando Vici has also Great Success in Sweden, with Pato a TravKriterium and TravDerby winner while Porthos Amok, himself, was second in last year's Swedish TravDerby. Another Swedish Travderby winner Beau Mec is actually in the race. Robert Bergh's a son of Jag de Bellouet, one of the true greats of the French scene, winning 4.4million euros on the back of victories in both the Prix d'Amerique and Prix Cornulier, the top races in France in harness and under saddle, and each race of the French triple crown. Beau Mec has won twice in France but apart from his Group one Travderby success, has largely been a bit part player since that win as a 4YO. Nathalie Henry teamed the emerging mare A Nous Deux to another harness racing monte victory in today’s €120,000 Gr. II Prix Rene Palyart at Paris-Vincennes. Ms. Henry positioned the winner, a four year-old daughter of Goetmals Wood from Nina Madrik by In Love With You, third on the pylons for much of the 2175 meter journey. The pair then took after the leaders midway around the last bend, collared Airport and Eric Raffin at mid-stretch and drew clear for a convincing win timed in 1.12.7kr on a rain-soaked course. A Nous Deux is trained by Ronny Kuiper for owner/breeder Jean-Pierre Dubois. Since becoming a monte specialist in September 2013 the winner has posted four wins in eight appearances and those wins have tallied €182,700 of the mare’s career earnings of €250,050. Summary April 29, 2014 Paris-Vincennes, Prix Rene Palyart, Gr. Gros Bios-based Dutchman Ron Kuiper looks to have a rising monte star in his stable in A Nous Deux who heads the field in the 120,000 euro Group two Prix Rene Palyart at Vincennes tonight. The mare is owned by legendary French breeder Jean Pierre Dubois and is one of two in the race by Goetmals Wood. The well-travelled Kuiper was introduced to the Fabulous Gros Bois training centre when a stable lad for Stefan Hultman, the trainer for the powerful Travkompianet Stall AB, when they would rent boxes of Pierre Vercruysse in the early 2000s. Now established in France on his own account, Hultman's stable star Maharajah is still a regular winter visitor to Kuiper's training barn as Hultman and Kuiper maintain a close relationship. A Nous Deux is coming off a last start fourth in the Prix Beaumanoir a 4-5YOs event at Vincennes, after beating her own age group in the last two montes that have been contested for the A-generation, the Prix Louis le Bourg and Prix de Pardieu. These were her first two attempts at group racing, and she will be once again partnered with top rider Nathalie Henry, and they are at short odds to go three from three. His likely toughest opposition comes from ex-pat Swede's Ake Kristoffersson's Airport, a Love You stallion from the powerful Ecurie des Charmes. Airport, was a close second in the Prix Louis le Bourg after leading for most of the journey and then ran down the field under harness in the Prix Phaeton, his first attempt at group racing in the bike. Eric Raffin will be up for the stallion's second group race under saddle, who looks bred for the part. Airport is from the same family as top monte specialist Quarry Bay, a runner-up in the Prix de Cornulier. Laurent Claude Abrivard is represented by the well supported Agrippine a mare by Hasting who will be ridden by Alexandre Abrivard. She was a runner up in the group one monte, Prix de Vincennes but has galloped in her last two monte races and was a distant ninth last start in the Prix Phaeton under harness. Pierre Coignard lines up group two Prix Camille de Wazierres winner Al Capone Jet a son of Jag de Bellouet who will be ridden by Matthieu Abrivard. He has galloped both times since his prestigious group two win in January. Asana Trembladaise, a well performed daughter of Kuadro Wild steps out with trainer Anthony Dollion in the saddle. A runner up in the group one Saint-Leger Des Trotteurs last year, she had two group two monte wins in a row at the start of the winter meeting, but has been unplaced in three starts since the start of the year. Thierry Duvaldestin has entered Aquarelle de Fael a daughter of Look de Star who, has a group two placing under saddle, and will be ridden by Franck Nivard. Hippodrome Enghien in France today played host to the Gr. I International Prix de l'Atlantique with a 200,000e purse over the 2150 meters autostart sprinter distance (1-5/16 miles). Italy's Pascia'Lest (5m Varenne-Superiors Sun-Diamond Way) prevailed in a race record 1.11.3kr as he received a perfect pocket trip from reinsman Enrico Bellei for trainer Thierry Duvaldestin and owner Samuele Querci. The winner was off at 10/1 odds and scored his 13th career win now for earnings of 919,382e. Bellei was able to take the early lead away from Univers de Pan (Philippe Daugeard). In front briefly, the winner then pocketed when Univers de Pan was quick on the retake. Timoko sat third for Pierre Vercruysse but could not keep with the leading pair in the drive. Bellei waited and then sprung to the attack, finally gaining superiority as the wire approached. Univers de Pan was a brave second with Caballion third but disqualified. Tiego d'Etang was placed third for Christian Bigeon with Timoko and Olmo Holz awarded spots four and five. In the beaten field were Quinoa du Gers (sixth), Quoumba de Guez (eighth) and Roxane Griff (a fading ninth). Pascia'Lest has been under the tutelage of Thierry Duvaldestin since November, but had never passed the winning pole for the new trainer until today, and in a superb manner. Duvaldestin was at Saint -Malo today and posted four winning drives with his pupils. Pascia'Lest became one of the sprinter kings of Enghien- Soisy, including Main Wise As and Exploit Caf , other Italian champions that had won the "Atlantic " in their racing careers. This son of Varenne , timed today in 1.11.3kr, set a track record for the event , which had been held by Jag de Bellouet with 1.11.4kr in 2005.
