CHARLOTTETOWN, PE - Thursday evening's card was cut short after issues with the starting gate at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park but Innocent Kiss was still able to defeat eight foes. The capital oval program was cancelled after just four races for the safety of all horses and drivers with malfunctions in the starting gate as the main concern. Innocent Kiss won the fastest dash of the program disposing of her maiden status with a 1:59.3 romp by 14 open lengths for driver Adam Merner. Second went to Lyndale Coco (Driven by Jason Hughes) in the $1,200 event while Dustylanejazz (Corey MacPherson) completed the triactor. Innocent Kiss, a three-year-old daughter of Westwardho Hanover, is trained by Melissa Rennie for owners Merner of Charlottetown and Max Sehl of Port Morien, N.S. Hop Up was the quickest trot winner, stopping the clock in 2:00 with MacPherson in the bike for owner-trainer Keith Campbell of Tyne Valley. Rosberg (Hughes) was second over third place Majian Chester (Jim Ripley). Live racing is set to resume Saturday evening at Red Shores Charlottetown with 12-dashes set for a 6 P.M. start time featuring the Cecil Ladner Memorial Invitational. Saturday will also feature the Future Stars of the 2018 season with the first two-year-old racing qualifiers of the season with a 11 A.M. start time at Red Shores Charlottetown. Red Shores has announced a shuttle bus for the Atlantic Regional Driving Championship at Truro Raceway on Friday June 29th The shuttle will depart Red Shores Charlottetown at 3:00pm and Red Shores Summerside at 4pm. Please arrive 15 minutes before departure. Cost $40 per person. A credit card required for reservation. A great way to travel to and from the Atlantic Regional Driving Championship in Truro for only 40 dollars per person. Contact Tara in the race office Monday to Friday from 8am-4pm. The Drive for Charity event features 10 of Prince Edward Island's top harness drivers, based on 2017 statistics from Charlottetown and Summerside racetracks. Charlottetown, PE - Race Day Live at Truro Raceway, a special presentation powered by Red Shores and produced by Universum Media, will take place on Friday June 29th for the Atlantic Regional Driving Championship presented in part by Standardbred Canada and Truro Raceway. Post Time is 6:30pm for the championship event. The race program will be hosted by Red Shores' own Lee Drake and Peter MacPhee along with Nova Scotia's Brad McCallum and Joe Kelly, as the show is broadcasted live from the tarmac of the Nova Scotia oval. The show will be available live at www.redshores.ca as the very best driving talent in the region clashes for the top two spots. The eight drivers competing in the event include Prince Edward Island representatives Marc Campbell, Jason Hughes, Ken Murphy and Gilles Barrieau. Nova Scotia will be represented at the regional event by Darren Crowe, Redmond Doucet and John Gerard Kennedy while Todd Trites represents New Brunswick. Summerside, PE - The Prince County Horsemen's Club has a new title sponsor for the Governor's Plate at Red Shores Summerside. Township Chevrolet Buick GMC has agreed to sponsor Summerside's signature event with the Governor's Plate celebrating its 50th anniversary on Saturday July 14, 2018. "On behalf of our horsemen's club and the harness racing community we want to thank Township Chevrolet Buick GMC for their support," said PCHC President Kingsley Walsh. Organizers are working on many new events on and off the track which includes the Summerside Lobster Carnival. "We have a solid relationship with harness racing and the Lobster Carnival," said Red Shores Race Manager Adam Walsh. "This season features stakes events, exciting promotions and even special anniversary segments as we honor the 50th running of the Governor's Plate." The 2018 race season gets underway on Monday May 21st at 1pm, with Governor's Plate week starting on Sunday July 8th. . Now in its sixth year, the harness racing campaign has earned just over $70,000. Summerside, PE - Woggy Rocks, under the command of harness racing driver Adam Merner, put away Painted Desert in deep stretch to win the Wednesday night top class at Red Shores Summerside. The newcomer stopped the timer in 1:56.4. Neal Moase trains the six-year-old son of Rocknroll Hanover for owner Mikeala Wheaton, Cornwall, PE. Painted Desert (Corey MacPherson) held on for second with Allstar Seelster (Norris Rogers) third. The 5-2-7 combination returned $197.80. It was Merner's second winner of the night after clicking with J RS Hurricane earlier on the card. In other action, Rojans White Jet captured the Ivan & Isabelle Cameron memorial for driver Marc Campbell and owner-trainer Ralph Sweet, O'Leary, PE. The mare notched her second win in a row and fifth win of the 2017 campaign. Drivers Dale Spence and Norris Rogers also recorded driving doubles on the program. Spence scored with Dancers Pass for trainer Blaine McKenna and Jays Little Spark for conditioner Gregory MacInnis. Summerside, PE - Likely to Win has received top billing in the special Thanksgiving Day pace at Red Shores Summerside Monday. Post time is 1pm. The Melissa Rennie trainee has been putting up some solid numbers and comes in to the race with six wins from 26 starts and a third place finish in a dazzling 1:54.3 over Charlottetown on September 23rd. Driver Adam Merner will handle the son of Western Terror from post 4 for owners Blenise Young, Lester Campbell, NS, and Jeffery Campbell of Alberta. The competitive field also includes rail sitter Instant Shadow for driver Jason Hughes and trainer Sifroi Melanson along with heavy weights Rash B Havior (Marc Campbell) and Machinthesand (Ken Murphy). Allstar Seelster and Keep Coming are also part of the line-up. The Prince County Horsemen's Club have organized a family day component to the afternoon card which includes an opportunity for one family to go trackside and present the cooler in the Summerside Family Day Pace. Race analysts Bo Ford with the Backstretch Beat and classifier Gerard Smith have landed on different horses for their top choice. Ford favors All Access, owned by Foxyhall Racing, Summerside, PE, while Smith leans on Windemere Johnny out of the two hole for Gary Chappell and conditioner Phil Sizer. The trotters will open up the holiday card at the Prince County oval with Zip The Lip getting the nod as the one to beat. The nine-year-old is fresh off a convincing win at Charlottetown. Brian MacPhee gets the assignment from trainer-owner Orville Willis of O'Leary, PEI. The family day activities get underway at 12Noon with children's entertainment, face painting and cake. Charlottetown, PE - The Atlantic Classic Sale will again kick off the Weekend of Champions, the fall feature event of Atlantic Canadian harness racing. The sale will start at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Crapaud Exhibition grounds, and will offer numerous siblings to 2017 stakes stars. In addition, there are several Ontario Sired entries that are expected to draw buyers' attention. On Saturday, the Atlantic Breeders Crown consolation races will start at 12:30 p.m. at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park. There will also be a sold-out banquet presented by the PEI Standardbred Horse Owners Association starting at 7:00 p.m. that evening in the Top of the Park restaurant. The event will celebrate the achievements of several stars of the Atlantic Canadian breeding industry. Sunday will kick off with a complimentary pancake breakfast at 9:00 a.m. at Turfs Bar & Grill followed by a fan seminar in the Red Shores grandstand. The 2017 Atlantic Breeders Crown champions will be crowned Sunday afternoon starting at 12:30 p.m. at Red Shores. The Host Committee of the 2017 Atlantic Breeders Crown will again recognize Atlantic harness racing families for their long-term contribution to the industry. One family meeting the criteria will be selected from each of Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Awards sponsored by the Province of Prince Edward Island will be presented as part of the Atlantic Breeders Crown Banquet on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at the Top Of The Park, Red Shores Charlottetown. The harness racing industry and general public are invited to submit nominations to the Evaluation Committees in each province for consideration for recognition. Nominations should be in written form, and detail how the nominated family meet the suggested criteria: 1. Fifty years of family involvement in Atlantic Harness Racing 2. At least one family member still active in the industry in some capacity 3. Achievements on an Atlantic /Canadian scale as a breeder, owner, trainer, driver or builder 4. Public recognition for outstanding contribution to Atlantic Harness Racing - i.e. National or Provincial Halls of Fame) 5. Success in major Atlantic Canadian races - i.e. track records, stakes or invitational wins, significant milestones,(i.e wins) etc. or prolific success of several family members 6. Longevity of success of family member(s) The Evaluation Committees reserve the right to submit nominations as well. Nominations are due by September 18th. The evaluation committees, which have been established in each province, will select one family per Atlantic province to be honoured. Summerside, PE - HP Bushido Dragjet, under the command of harness racing trainer Marc Campbell, captured the Wednesday night feature at Red Shores Summerside in 1:56.1. The newcomer picked up his second victory of the season for owners Michael Folkins, John Davidson and Keith Camick, NB. Pictonian Storm (Gary Chappell) was second with Machinthesand (Ken Murphy) completing the triactor. Campbell also posted winners aboard Bet R All and Rash Behavior for the hat-trick. Western Sexy won the Clifford Wedge memorial for driver Adam Merner, trainer Phil Sizer and owner Jason Sherry, Kensington, PE. Summerside, PE - Machinthesand, under the command of Ken Murphy, fired off the rail and went on to win the Sunday Feature at Red Shores Summerside stopping the timer in 1:57.2. The eight-year-old son of Mach Three used a 28.4 closer to turn back Eagle Jolt ( Ryan Desroche) and DBS Rosco (Walter Cheverie) for his first win of the 2017 campaign. Hugh Murphy trains the pacer for owners Noonan Holdings Ltd - Russell and Karen Noonan, Summerside, PE. The 1-6-2 triactor returned $142.10 Jason Hughes enjoyed a big day at the Prince County oval scoring a driving triple. Hughes, who has teamed up with Red Shores in the Drive for Charity promotion raising money for PEI Hospice Foundation, had top honours aboard Rising Fella for trainer Jansen Sweet, Old Buck for conditioner Alan MacDonald and Good Friday Three for trainer Wade Sorrie.
