The Dominator has been in a happy place recently and that spells unhappy news for his opposition at Oamaru on Sunday. The 6yr-old goes in to the feature trot on Kurow Cup day after unleashing a brilliant 26.6sec final 400m at the Ashburton workouts on Tuesday. That blazing final sectional to round off a sedate 3:14.5 overall time for 2400m, was the latest showing in what looks to be the start of a bright campaign for The Dominator. The trotter has returned to racing with the kind of attitude that will allow him to capitalise on the potential he has shown in the past. And that is something trainer Donna Williamson hopes will continue. “He seems very bright and happy and on form at the moment,” the trainer said. “He is a lot happier and he seems to be doing things right - we are crossing our fingers, a wee bit, that he keeps that up.” “But even in his work at home at the moment he has worked it out.” Sunday’s 2600m handicap could set up as a tactical battle between the drivers of Anothersuperstar and The Dominator. Step and run tactics have seen Anothersuperstar cash in in her past two starts in lesser company at Forbury Park and Gore. Driver Matthew Williamson will almost certainly employ the same free-wheeling strategy on the Ricky Allen trained veteran, again. That scenario could be set up a stern test for the Dominator, who starts from the 35m mark for driver Craig Thornley. Another veteran, 12yr-old Trick Star, looks one of the toughest horses for The Dominator to beat. The pair filled the quinella in their last clash, when The Dominator won at Addington, last month. Trick Star gets a 25m head start on his main rival, after effectively meeting The Dominator off level marks from behind the mobile at Addington. Southland pacer Franco Santino looks to have a fitness edge on his main opposition going in to Sunday’s Kurow Cup. The Nathan Williamson trained 5yr-old has had the most recent racing of the three class horses of the 2600m handicap, who will start from the 10m back mark. Franco Santino won a Wyndham workout, this week, in preparation for his Kurow Cup tilt. His last race day hit out came late last month, with his good second placing behind Jay Tee Tyron in the Rangiora Winter Cup. Fellow backmarker Storm Prince has not been sighted publicly since his sixth placing at Addington, behind A Bettor Act in mid July. Trainer Paul Court admitted his 5yr-old’s lack of recent racing was a concern going in to Sunday’s race.   “His work has been good, without being outstanding, and if anything he will just need the run is all,” the trainer said. “He is just lacking a bit of race fitness.” Court hopes a pinpoint drive from champion reinsman Blair Orange could help Storm Prince conserve energy, so he can fight out the finish.  “Hopefully Blair can weave a bit of magic with him and look after him without being too aggressive on him and hopefully he can deliver the goods.” Fellow backmarker, The Tin Soldier, also lacks recent racing ahead of tomorrow’s event. However, the Brad Mowbray trained 6yr-old has looked ready to resume in his two recent Ashburton trials. In the latest of those, The Tin Soldier ran his last 800m in 56.0sec to win. The consistent Nimah Franco looks the hardest of the front markers to beat in the Kurow Cup. v   By Jonny Turner Reprinted with permission of HRNZ

Owing to persistent rain and the prospect of more rain leaving the track underwater and unsafe, the Oamaru Harness Racing Club has made the early call to transfer their 'Brothers In Arms meeting' to the all-weather track, at the same venue. President, David Heffernan, reported to HRNZ on the current state of affairs. "We've had verging on record rainfalls for time of year. There is surface water on the track currently. The forecast is for further showers in coming days, which will offset any drying and we'll still be stuck at square one of that process. Of course safety concerns are paramount too. We have to provide a safe track for racing on and given we have the all-weather track the early decision was made." "We made the decision in consultation with HRNZ, NZRB and the RIU, pre-nominations. Making the early call allows it to be as fair as possible for all concerned." Heffernan confirmed the 'Brothers In Arms' Drivers Challenge will proceed as programmed. "It's disappointing obviously, as we wanted to run this meeting on the grass but the all-weather track gives us the back-up opportunity and we feel this was the most prudent course of action." A new approved programme has been posted online and can be found on the HRNZ website. The only changes have been to the distances run. Nominations for the meeting close Tuesday at noon.   Race meeting distances as follows: Race 1 *2600m Race 2 2000m Race 3 *2600m Race 4 2000m Race 5 2000m Race 6 *2600m Race 7-9 2000m Race 10 *2600m *Denotes distance change   Jess Smith Communication and Ownership Co-Ordinator Harness Racing New Zealand Inc

The field for todays PGG Wrightson Hannon Memorial at Oamaru has been reduced down to a field of seven, with the latest scratching of the Greg and Nina Hope trained Usain Colt, who has been sold to Australia.  Hope still has the current second favourite Seel The Deal engaged in the race. He is a big mover on the FF win fixed odds, caving in to $3.80 after opening longer than $5.00 on Thursday night. There is a lot of confidence in the Hope stable that Seel The Deal can go a cheeky race today, in preparation for the New Zealand Trotting Cup in November. Driver Ricky May is also quietly confident about the seven year old geldings chances and said "he could need the run without any racing, but I like him a lot in that race" Seel The Deal has been ticking along nicely at the trials and workouts. He ran slashing final sectionals at the Rangiora trials on the 13th September, running home in around 55 seconds for his last 800m in that Rangiora trial. Race rival Alta Orlando trained by Robert Dunn, zipped over his last 800m in a tick over 54 seconds in the same trial, also justifying his readiness for todays race.  The Graeme Anderson trained and Dexter Dunn driven Titian Banner is currently the warm favourite ($1.65 FF) to win the Hannon Memorial, after an easy win fresh up at Addington on the 1st September and then a good second placing to Have Faith In Me in last weekends New Brighton Cup. Seel The Deal and Alta Orlando in their latest trial   Robert Dunn also has the speedy Tuapeka Trick engaged today in Race 6 with John Dunn doing the driving. Tuapeka Trick was placed last season in the group three kindergarten stakes behind stable-mate The Brooklyn Brawler and has come back a stronger horse judging by his latest dominant win at the workouts. The well bred Bettor's Delight colt is raced by the Westview Racing Super17 Syndicate, many of whom are heading down to watch the race today.     Harnesslink Media

Southland driver Nathan Williamson won't be driving at Oamaru on Sunday. He was suspended for four racedays from Friday 8th September until Thursday 28th September after Stipendary Stewards charged him with excessive use of the whip on Tas Man Bromac when he won at Winton earlier this month. Williamson says he was surprised to be called into the Stipendary Stewards room two races later to hear the charge. He flew to Christchurch on Tuesday to appeal the ruling and was told today that the penalty stood. When spoken to he hadn't read the full transcript of the appeal decision. Williamson says he's extremely disappointed with the decision. The suspension has certain been hotly debated in harness racing circles, and he says he's been overwhelmed by the number of texts and calls he's had in support. "I've had hundreds of calls about it. I've spoken to Rob Lawson who is the head of the New Zealand Drivers Association and had an email from Gordon Lee the local head of the Association. He (Lee) thought that I should appeal it. He's also written to the stipes." Williamson who operates the largest racing team in Southland says the suspension has been costly.   "It cost me $600 to fly to Christchurch, $250 for the appeal and the cost of getting additional staff in while I was away. Something like this is a $4,000 hit for me. It's extremely frustrating but at the end of the day they're (Stipes) doing their job. The general feeling is that a suspension is harder than a fine because people just pay the fine and move on."  He says that after yesterday's hearing he has a better understanding of what the Stewards want. But he says the appeal was more about the length of the suspension. "They want you to break your actions up. Use the whip, then run the whip through the tails, flick the horse's backend, hit the dust sheet or shaft. I understand that. I was appealing the penalty only, not the decision." When this story was going on-line he hadn't decided on a replacement driver. "I'm a Southland man so I'd like to use a Southland driver if I could but I'll have to speak to the owners. I'll probably get the same driver for both of them (Tas Man Bromac and Poppymalda)." Williamson had thoughts of taking Poppymalda to Addington for the Ordeal Cup and Tas Man Bromac was a possibility to start up there as well. "If I hadn't been suspended I would have taken them both through to Addington. Then I thought, if I appeal the penalty I could just take her (Poppymalda) to Oamaru and drive her there. That's why she didn't go to the Ordeal Cup and she is in (at Oamaru) on Sunday." Williamson says the suspension has put both horses behind in their schedules but he knows he just has to move on from today's decision and continue to direct his training operation.    Bruce Stewart Southland Harness Racing

On the slowest week of harness racing for the year with only two meetings, last weeks ringaround produced some good results. Lance from Racechat had the best dividend when Bettor Backim flew up the inside at Rangiora to grab a win paying $21.80 and $5.90. There were several other winners and many placings as well last week. Alderbeck today became the first winner of the new harness racing season for quiet achievers Phil and Bev Williamson.  After accepting the award for "Outstanding Contribution to Harness Racing" at the national awards last Thursday, it was business as usual for the duo at the Oamaru harness racing club this afternoon (Sunday). Alderbeck was Phil Williamson's 546th winner since he started training in 1993. 526 of those wins or 96% have come from trotters proving what a great trainer of trotters Phil is. Phil was fairly confident of a good showing today from Alderbeck, saying " I think she will go a good race but I would not be putting the house on it at the short odds she is at today."   He said "there are quite a few in that race that could win with the right run". Son Brad gave punters of the favorite no cause for concern, firstly sitting parked and then pulling away in the straight to win easily by more than two lengths at the line.  Alderbeck (Pegasus Spur - J D Pat) trotted the 2600m race in a quick 3:20.2, with a closing 800m in 58.4 seconds.  Earlier in the day Bite The Bullet (Mach Three - Pistol Packing Mama) blasted home from the 800m in 54.2 to beat stablemate Dreams To Reality by a head giving John Dunn his second win of the season. Young trainer Mitchell Kerr has started the 2017/2018 season with a bang as another 3yo colt he trains in Alta Shelby easily won the last race at todays meeting. Alta Shelby (Mach Three - La Joconde) led for the last lap for driver Matt Anderson and sprinted his last 400m in a quick 27.4 seconds winning with plenty of petrol left in the tank. Kerr has gone to the top of the leaderboard in the trainers premiership with 3 wins from 3 starters giving him a perfect UDR of 1.0000 from his three starts so far this season. Alderbeck winning her race.     Harnesslink Media

The Oamaru Harness Racing Club holds their first meeting of the new season on Sunday. Only a seven race card is on offer but the fields are very even and there will be some good racing on the day. We highlight the pick six held on races two through to seven inclusive, which is for a guaranteed pool of $25,000   Leg 1  The two Robert Dunn trained runners look to have the wood on this field and we favour Bite The Bullet who ran home well last night at Addington in fast sectionals. Dreams To Reality is a danger and possibly Hannity who improved last start on the track. Leg 2 A tricky leg of pick six here with a number of chances from the standing start. We like OK Im Bad, Vera's Delight, Diamond Life, Sands Of Love and Out Of Aces any of which could win with the right run. Leg 3 An even field of trotters and many chances. Favorite Alderbeck has to be the main chance and she has the form to get the win here. Zachary Binx has a lot of ability but was making mistakes last season. If he is on his game then a big danger to the favorite. All Setlled Down, Sam Galleon and Stylish Duke can all be a threat if the favorites make a mistake. Leg 4 This race could be dominated from the front and Run Boy Run and Earthquake both have the speed to lead with their good draws. Dangers are the two Peter Robertson trained runners in Gunpowder and Woodlea Shawn. Leg 5 Say Your Pres is the top selection here after a nice run fresh up at Addington. Samantha Ottley takes the reins and Mark Jones thought this one was his best hope this week. I could see her leading and being too good for this field.  Tijuana Taxi and Clover Lady look the main dangers. Leg 6 This race looks to have the best anchor of pick six in Alta Shelby. He raced with merit against some classy two year olds last season and was spotted putting in some nice late work at recent trials in Canterbury. He has gate speed and should win if he can find the front early. Suggested pick six. Leg 1      4,5,6 Leg 2      2,4,5,9,10 Leg 3      4,5,6,7,8 Leg 4      1,3,5,11 Leg 5      2 Leg 6      4 Cost $30 for 20%   Harnesslink Media

It was another good week last week for the harness racing ringaround with six winners selected again. Rory Mcllwrick finished his season on a high and had the best dividend last week when Danielle Amore won at Oamaru on Sunday and paid $3.60 to win on the tote.
