Stefan Hultman reportedly gave great thought about whether to engage Maharajah for a fourth attempt at the Prix d'Amerique. After a disappointing last prep in snowy Sweden, some did not expect Maharajah to start albeit his second to last start in Sweden which was a solid winning effort. Also disappointing in his last two starts, Royal Dream was nonetheless engaged in the classic, a race he won easily in 2013. His connections have stated that they will make a decision tomorrow. Ready Cash is the likely favorite again this year albeit a group of new French players may contest his past supremacy. Triode de Felliere and Up And Quick deserve watching. Italy will probably send out up to four starters in the 2014 edition of the Prix d'Amerique, including Mack Grace SM and Nesta Effe. Mack Grace SM, a sharp son of CC's Chuckie T, has won 12 straight. It is a rich day of racing on Saturday at Vincennes with a pair of  Group I, Group II and Group III's featuring the Prix Maurice de Gheest , the male preparatory race for the upcoming Criterium des Jeunes, the first group one for the B generation, which takes place on the third Sunday of February. There is a field of nine top colts assembled including the first five home in last month's top two-year-old race in France the Prix Emmanuel Margouty, led by Philippe Allaire's pair of Ready Cash colts Brilliantissime and Bird Parker who provided the quinella. Brillantissime who will be driven again by Jos Verbeeck is the early favourite, from Bruno de Gueron's Brutus de Bailly (Niky), Franck Anne's Bolide de Gueron (Cygnus d'Odyssee) and Bird Parker who are all heavily supported. Sebastien Guarato's Best of Sly (mam Bourbon) and Thierry Duvadestin's Goetmals Wood colt Bosco du Goutier are also colts with a lot of talent. Earlier in the day the Prix de Croix brings the best staying five-year-olds in Europe in a UET Masters Series race over 2850m. Viking du Val, who was third in the Criterium Continental last month is the early favourite ahead of last year's Criterium des 4 Ans winner Voltigeur De Myrt and Stephane Melander's Swedish stallion Porthos Amok, the runner up in last year's Swedish TravDerby. The backmarker is the well performed group one winning Love You stallion Village Mystic, who was runner up in the Criterium Continental but has to concede a 25m start to his 12 rivals. European group one winners Princess Grif (Italy), a Varenne mare now in Fabrice Solouy's care, and Lars I Nilsson's Dreams Take Time (mweden), an Andover Andover stallion, are also receiving heavy early support alongside French stallion Vigove, a group two winner and a Criterium des 4 Ans placegetter. The day kicks off with the Prix de Luneville, a 95,000 euro monte for 5YOs over 2175m which sees Emannuel Ruault's exciting prospect Votka Bleu back under saddle for the third time, and the first since running second in a stellar field in the Prix Olry Roederer - beating home Vision Intense that day. He will face the emerging talent of Veloce du Banney who comes into the race on the back of two group three monte wins and has compiled a very fine record of five wins in just 12 starts for Franck Leblanc, all of them under saddle. She will be ridden by star monte jockey Yoann Lebourgeois. Vermeer Jarzeen and Vraie Blonde are also last start monte winners with claims in this. The fourth group race on the card is the Prix du Forez, one of the wonderful series of rich races for older horses, which demonstrate the French commitment to providing decent racing for the entirety of a horse's racing life, This group three over 2850m is restricted to horses older than for seven-years-old who race for a purse of 110,000 euros. The favourite is Jean Luc Dersoir's recent winner The de Chine (Blue Eyes America) from Jean Michel Bazire's mare Tornade du Digeon (Jag de Bellouet). Third favourite is Ru de l'Airou, one of the lesser lights of the much-vaunted R generation who has still managed to amass 610,000 euro racing in the shadow of Ready Cash, Rapide Lebel, Royal Dream et al. Like several in this race, the son of Cygnus d'Odyssee is a regular on the Tour Europeene as is the well supporterd Swedishman and Ton Reve de Cahot - also talented geldings who are perhaps a little off the pace among the European elite but given their chance to make decent money in the brilliant French system. Having said that, Ru de l'Airou finished second in the rich Grand Prix du Sud Ouest in October to T-generation star Timoko, beating into third place Swedish star Sanity, a group one winner and a gold division regular. Finland has punched above its weight for a long time in harness racing. Think of the great Commander Crowe, bred and originally owned and trained by Finn Petri Puro who has lived for many years in Halmstad Sweden, like many Finns do, to make a living out of the sport they love including until recently trainer Kari Lahdekorpi, from Huittenen, who was the champion Swedish trainer in 2007-8 and 2004 trainer of the year until his shock retirement this year. No one in Scandinavia has driven more winners then Swedish based Finn Jorma Kontio, while compatriot and long-time patron Timo Nurmos, is one of the top trainers in Sweden. Yet another Finn Tuomas Korvenoja is the breeder and owner of one of the rising superstars Brad de Veluwe, the European Derby winner last year, and runner up in the European Championship for five year-olds last week. Brad de Veluwe is by Andover Hall, himself owned by a Finn Erkki Laakkonen, although resident in the United States. Finland is also home to two champion US sires in Donerail and Like A Prayer, among others, and the rapid improvement of Finnish horses can be seen by the likes of She Loves You, who won the elite mares race at Solvalla on Elitloppet weekend last year. And on Sunday, the next crop of 3YOS will line up for the Finnish Trav Kriterium, where perhaps the next Brad de Veluwe will emerge triumphant, including his trainer Korvenoja who will present the promising Muscles Yankee colt Jonesy. Jonesy ran second to rising Italian star Rori Axe (Ready Cash) in the Group II Prix Emile Wendling at Vincennes two starts ago, beating the highly touted Jean Pierre Dubois Donato Hanover filly Tast Of Bourbon into third place. He was good enough to make the Group I E3 Final against the top Swedish 3YOs, where he was beaten into sixth place, following by one place last weekend’s Swedish Kriterium winner, Rokkakudo. He also has the fastest record in the field, 1.11.8 (1.55.2MR) which he acquired in Sweden. Brad de Veluwe’s sire Andover Hall is represented this year by Greenleaf Slim, who was one of the early favourites for the race and has won six of his nine starts, and he will be driven by Mika Forss for trainer Heuikki Korhonen. Nurmos will have Kontio (who has won this race five times, the first in 1979) aboard his Yankee Glide colt Zo Zo Hoss who has 4 wins from 8 starts in Sweden while he has another colt by dual Prix d’Amerique winning sire Offshore Dream in Dream Run who has had two wins from 4 starts in Sweden. Pekka Korpi, who first won a Finnish Kritierium with Guiding Star in 1981, has four entrants with Express Duo (Express Ride), who has won the most money in the field, and was second in the Ulf Thorensen Minnelop. Korpi also has Arctic Shot who is by Classic Photo, who sired the recent European Derby winner Mosaique Face, while he also has the filly Eden Duo by Orlando Vici who sired the European Championship for 5YOs winner Un Mec d’Heripre, while he also a colt by Finnish resident US sire Donerail in Good Dynamite. Markku Nieminen’s Kadabra colt Harmi's Frido has won 61,000 euros from eight wins in 15 starts, has a good draw at 2 and also has the third fastest record at 1.13.8kr (1.58.4MR). The heats for the International Group I Grand Prix de l’UET will be held this week at Vincennes and Solvalla with the €400,000 final to be held at Solvalla on September 29. There are 12 French horses, two Dutch, one Italian and a German horse have entered, and  unusually for a year with the final in Sweden,  most of the top French horses are involved. The only top liner missing is Criterium des 4 Ans winner Voltigeur De Myrt, currently on the annual  "Tour Européen du Trotteurs Français", where he finished sixth in the Prix de President, in Avenches, Switzerland on the weekend. The first heat looks the easier of the two and the Jean Michel Bazire’s  Vaux le Vicomte (4h Nahar de Beval) who was second in the Criterium des 3 Ans looks a class above these having beaten the best in this field home when second in both the Prix Gaston Brunet and Prix Phaeton, two of the biggest races of the year. Last  season’s Prix de l’Etoile runner-up Vera Pierji  (4m Otello Pierji) and third placed Very Pleasant (4h Goetmals Wood)  are both entered but the former, who is trained by Thierry Duvaldestin  is not in good form having not won in over a year. Philippe Moulin’s Very Pleasant, who  won a minor race in the provinces last month, will be probably be the second favourite, but his last good performance in top company was in April. In the second heat Paul Hagoort’s Dutch Derby winner Clint Boko (Abano As) is the only foreign  threat to three French horses with real claims. The winner should come from the trio of Varade d'Hermine (4m Legs du Clos) with Jean Michel Bazire in the bike,   Viva Island (4m Goetmals Wood) with the incomparable Jean-Pierre Dubois driving and Volcan d'Urzy (4h  Password), another of Philippe Moulin’s charges. Varade d’Hermine has won 10 of his 15 starts and was disqualified from second place in the Criterium des 4 Ans for a rough gait, but has since won two Group IIs  and  should be favourite. Volcan d’Urzy was promoted to second in the Criterium des 4 Ans but has since run down the track in similar company. GRAND PRIX DE I'U.E.T.
