Nahar is a nine-year-old gelded son of Love You from Mahonny Broline by Joie de Vie and the win today was his third in 2014 from five starts, and his 26th lifetime in 78 appearances, now for career earnings of 10,152,098SEK after earning one million SEK with the victory. A large crowd witnessed the Robert Bergh-trained Nahar winning Norrbottens Stora Pris, with a thrilling battle in the lane with Raja Mirchi as the pair were as one before a reported 10,853 trotting fans at Boden. "I will look at the recap and admire the two horses for their great performances", trainer/driver Robert Bergh said after the contest. Nahar (4) nips Raja Mirchi (3) At the halfway mark Adrian Kolgjini attacked with the pre-race favorite Raja Mirchi and took the lead. Nahar (the 2013 winner of this race and the 2013 Elitloppet) and Robert Bergh were well back in the field. But, Nahar quickly reached the leader 800 meters from the line, and won the stretch-long duel. Bergh stated on interview "it felt good around the final turn, but I saw that Raja Mirchi also looked great. I thought that we should go all the way 200 meters to the finish, but Raja Mirchi fought well so I had to pull the ear plugs 100 meters left, which concluded the race." by Thomas H. Hicks, for Harnesslink.com

The 2014 edition of the Elitloppet is a well-matched group in the two eliminations drawn today. The USA domiciled entrants are in separate divisions with Maven from pp6 in the first and Uncle Peter (David Miller listed to drive) from pp3 in the second group. Maven will battle last year's winner Nahar (Robert Bergh trained and driven) and four Europeans currently racing well, Shaq Is Back, Prussia, Timoko (with new reinsman Bjorn Goop up - victorious in their last outing) and yesterday's impressive winner and final invitee Truculent. Uncle Peter appears to have drawn the easier group albeit often rough-gaited Caballion was a winner in his last outing. Panne de Moteur and Delicious (USA developed by Ron Gurfein) are consistent performers and on a given day Raja Mirchi and Pascia'Lest can show up with a solid effort. Elimination A 1. Shaq Is Back - Daniel Reden SWE 2. Prussia - Pietro Gubellini ITY 3. Timoko - Bjorn Goop FR 4. Digital Ink - Ãrjan Kihlstrem SWE 5. Reven d'Amour - Erik Adielsson SWE 6. Officials named Nahar to start in the 2014 Elitloppet to defend his 2013 title against Maven, Pascia'Lest, Panne de Moteur, Uncle Peter, Timoko, Reven d'Amour, and Shaq Is Back. Eight additional contestants have yet to be named. Nahar blossomed last year after being acquired in spring 2012 by hockey playing brothers Henrik and Daniel Seden. They placed the horse with conditioner Robert Bergh and the historical stayer became enlightened with speed. The then seven year-old was second to Sanity in the Norbotten Pris and won a V75 test at Bollnas. He won twice that winter (2013-2013) in France before earning an Elitloppet start with a 1.09.7kr win at Gavle. He finished a good second to Sebastian K in his Elitloppet elimination and then won the final easily in 1.10.1kr defeating Arch Madness and Timoko. Nahar Nationality: Sweden (Stall Sedin HB) Trainer: Robert Bergh Åge/Sex: 9 g Love You – Mahonny Broline Earnings: 9.117.098 kronor KR record: 1.09,7 Later in the season after several disappointing and off-stride appearances, Nahar was put away and a comeback prepared for, leading to the 2014 Elitloppet. In related news trainer Thierry Duvaldestin reports that Pascia’Lest is expected to be fine for the Elitloppet after a disappointing sixth in the Lotteria first elimination. The trainer blamed a long journey to Naples and the track surface. He expects the Solvalla track to be more suitable and will fly his horse from Belgium to Stockholm. Thomas H. Hicks

Sweden provides an opportunity for stayers to gain valuable UET Masters Series points at Orebro on Saturday night, also doubling as the last leg of the V75. Swedish Masterskap winner On Track Piraten off a 40 metre handicap to the front runners is the class runner in the race. The altered son of French stallion Kool du Caux, is a group one winner over a staying distance having won Germany's top race last year, the Grosser Preis Von Deutschland, at Hamburg over the 2720m distance. Hans R Stromberg's gelding is also the winner of the CL Mullers Memorial over 2640m at Jagersro and the Masterskap or Swedish Championships at Aby over the same distance, both races carrying group two status. His sire Kool de Caux was second in the Prix d'Amerique (2700m) but also had a good turn of speed with victories in the Group one Copenhagen Cup (2011m) and the Prix de France (2100m) in a stellar career in which he won 1.5 million euro and took a record of 1.09.8 (1.52.2MR). "The Pirate's" major opposition will come from the likes of last year's winner New Line a Danish-bred son of King Conch who was trained in the victory by Ake Svanstedt, who of course is now resident in the United States but has transferred the horse to son Anders' stable. New Line has true staying credentials, not only winning this event last year but placing in the Harper Hanovers Lopp, the staying test on Elitloppet weekend, and the Malmo Stads Pris, another 3km marathon. Another with claims is Mellby Viking, the royally bred son of Viking Kronos, who relishes the longer distance. He has a super French pedigree, being from the family of Romee, the foundation mare for a family which includes Prix du Cornulier winner Dream With Me, Indy de Vive, the sire of Ready Cash, Italian Derby winner Daguet Rapide - another highly successful sire - Lazio du Bourg, who won the Criterium des 3 Ans, and Giesolo de Lou, who won just shy of 2 million euro to name but a few. Mellby VIking is very lightly raced, with just 22 starts for 13 wins and two placings, but 3 of the wins are at this distance, and one suspects trainer Timo Nurmos has some choice French missions ahead for the six-year-old stayer who is off the 20m handicap. Porthos Amok is also one who could figure prominently. He is a son of Orlando Vici, a French sire whose son Un Mec D'Heripre is one of the rising stars in his native land. Orlando Vici has also Great Success in Sweden, with Pato a TravKriterium and TravDerby winner while Porthos Amok, himself, was second in last year's Swedish TravDerby. Another Swedish Travderby winner Beau Mec is actually in the race. Robert Bergh's a son of Jag de Bellouet, one of the true greats of the French scene, winning 4.4million euros on the back of victories in both the Prix d'Amerique and Prix Cornulier, the top races in France in harness and under saddle, and each race of the French triple crown. Beau Mec has won twice in France but apart from his Group one Travderby success, has largely been a bit part player since that win as a 4YO. Olympiatravet, or the Olympia Trot is the first Group One of the new season for harness racing in Sweden and befitting its history it has drawn a stellar field of Scandinavian trotters. The UET Masters Series race, which has been a fixture at Aby since 1984 is worth 1.5 million SEK (330 000 euros) and is raced over two laps, or 2140m. This is a race whose alumni present a creme de la creme of European racing. Last year's winner was none other than Prix d'Amerique winner Maharajah, while the two previous winners were both Elitloppet winners, Commander Crowe and Brioni. The greatest trotter of all time Varenne won the race twice (2000 and 2002), while US champions who have had a marked impact on the breed in Europe such as Pershing (1979) and Sugarcane Hanover (1988) have etched the name on the honour roll. And a Swedish horse who has repaid some of that debt and influenced modern North American breeding, Meadow Road (the sire of Kadabra), also won the race, back in 1985. A US stallion Texas, is joint top sire with three individual winners in Grades Singing (1987), Karate Chop (1991) and dual winner Copiad (1996-7). Italian-bred but of pure US bloodlines, and the most influential sire of the millennium in Sweden, Viking Kronos also has three winners including Maharajah (who holds the record with 1.11.0 (1.54.1MR)), with stallion sons Triton Sund (2009) and Thai Thanic (2006). Swedish star Gidde Palema with 3 wins in a row from 2003 has won the race more times than any other although four horses have won it twice. Leading the trainers and drivers' honours are legendary horseman Stig Johansson and an addition to US ranks, champion mentor Ake Svanstedt, who have both trained four winners of the race, who by virtue of driving their charges each time, both also top the drivers honours with four. Stig Johansson is back again this year with Kash's Cantab (by Cantab Hall), although he leaves the driving these days to Erik Adielson. Svanstedt of course is busy with Sebastien K, who ran third in this race last year, and the rest of his team ready for a campaign in the States at his Florida base. But there is certainly plenty of stars left in Europe to provide a stellar lineup. How about last year's Elitloppet winner Sanity? Check. This year's Prix de France winner (the biggest race in France over the same distance) Noras Bean? Check. The best horses in Norway (Yarrah Boko ) and Finland (Brad de Veluwe)? Check. Raja Mirchi, who won the top races in Sweden for both 2YO and 3YO and also won this year's Prix Tenor de Baune in France, is also in the lineup. Throw in the in form V75 stalwarts Mr Picolet, Harry Haythrow and Ed You, and the stage is set for a super showdown.
