Uhlan du Val (5m Islero de Bellouet-Indiana Beautiful-Beautiful Somolli) was an easy 10/1 upset winner of the first “B” leading to the 2014 Prix d’Amerique in January. He scored in 1.12.9kr in a race in which the pace quickened with each 500 meter clocking. Time at the 1500 meter mark was 1.14.2kr. This Gr. II International UET Masters Series contest, over 2700 meters for 120,000 euro purse, may signal a changing of the guard (albeit Ready Cash and other international stars were not starters) as veterans Roxanne Griff, Quinoa du Gers and Reve de Beylev ended fifth, sixth and seventh in the 13 horse field (other well-known players Quoumba du Guez, Singalo, Main Wise As, Vanika du Ruel and  early leader Kadett CD were either back in the pack or disqualified). The long-striding, great-gaited winner scored for the sixth time in his career, good for over 560,000 euros. Cedric Megissier drove Uhlan du Val for owner J-P Megissier. Up And Quick (5m Buvetier d’Aunou-Fichtre-Quiton du Coral) raced well again to be second for Franck Nivard and trainer Franck Leblanc. Favorite Tiego d’Etang (6m Chaillot-Harolene-Vroum d’Or) was third for Christian Bigeon with Treskool du Caux (6m Kool du Caux-Intervista-Off Gy) fourth with Tony LeBeller aboard. The Quinte+ race of the day (1.2 million euro jackpot) was the Prix de Cosse-Le-Vivien (2100 meters autostart, 16 starters, 72,000 euro purse) with the winner being the Denmark registered New Line (8g King Conch-Pa’En Igen Frokjaer-Pay Dirt) with Pierre Levesque catch-driving for trainer Ake Svanstedt. He scored in 1.12kr to record his 17th career win good for 311,000 euros banked. Off at 3/1, the winner (who reminds this writer of Pay Dirt) defeated Tornade du Digeon (6f Jag de Bellouet-Herlane du Terme-Kimberland) and reinsman J-M Bazire with Sweden’s Ed You (6g Love You-Lancia Brick-Super Arnie) third for Robert Bergh and owner Stall Sedin HB. by Thomas H. The road to the 2014 Grand Prix d’Amerique officially kicks off at Vincennes on Saturday with the running of the first of the  four ‘B races’ the  Prix de Bretagne, which gives the winner a ticket to the great race on the last Sunday in January. The winners prize of €54,000is secondary. Two Swedish horses are among the 13 nominated for the 2700m volt start event, both with varying amounts of French breeding in their pedigree, while there is one Italian bred of pure American stock – the grand old campaigner Main Wise As, who was third in last year’s Prix d’Amerique. Last year’s Prix d’Amerique winner Royal Dream was a nomination for this race but has withdrawn as has highly rated Texas Charm, while Ready Cash has chosen to bypass the race as he did last year, when he ran second to Royal Dream. Ready Cash won the Prix de Breatgne in 2011 on his way to winning the Prix d’Amerique for the second time the following January. But last year’s winner Roxane Griff, the best mare of the stunning R generation is once again back – she was also the runner-up in 2011 – fresh from a win under saddle in the opening semi-classique (Group II) race of the Vincennes Winter Series, the Prix Reynolds. Two well-credentialled  Swedes are in the line up with Anders Lindqvist-trained Pato, a former Swedish Trav-Derby and Trav-Kriterium  winner  who has fouled out of both his starts in France, including last time out at Vincennes recently. But he is a very talented son of Orlando Vici and was bred by the Finnish master breeder Petri Puro, who of course bred Commander Crowe on a similar Franco American cross – a French sire with a dam of pure American bloodlines. Robert Bergh’s Kadett C.D. was second in the Criterium Continental on this track last year, a rare international intrusion into the placegetters of France’s Criteriums. He has won the European Derby (Grand Prix De l'Uet (Gr1)) and the Swedish Breeders Crown and is fashionably Franco-American  bred, being by former Hambletonian winner Scarlet Knight out of a half-French mare. Franck Leblanc’s exceptionally talented young stallion Up And Quick makes first start since his brilliant win in the Criterium des 5Ans in mid-August. He has a strong record of being in the money in big races in both Sweden and France. The field also includes the multi-talented Tiego d'Etang sixth in last year’s Prix d’Amerique and second in the Prix de Paris, but is also a group two monte winner, and the afore-mentioned super Italian-bred Main Wise As, a multiple group one winner in France and Italy, and a place getter in the Prix d’Amerique and Prix de France. The only horse in the race of pure American bloodlines, he has been an outstanding ambassador for the breed. There is also the reappearance of the four-time Group one winning mare Vanika du Ruel who was an  entrant in this year’s Prix d’Amerique at the youngest possible age. Of the older brigade Quoumba de Guez was second in this race last year and is a grand old campaigner while the only representative of the S generation is Singalo, a monte specialist who won this year’s Prix De Cornulier and  has also won the group one Prix de l’Ile-de-France. All his 15 victories have been under saddle. He may be aiming at one last tilt at the big race to add to his already solid stud credentials. The Prix d’Amerque is not a race the S generation has excelled in with only two horses ever competing in it, with Severino’s sixth its best effort. By contrast the R generation has eight representatives in the big race for three winners, two runners-up and another in the top five – which is why the French consider it one of the two greatest generations. The road to the greatest race in trotting starts on Saturday. The Breeders Crown for 3YO males at Eskilstuna tonight throws up an interesting mix of form and class into the equation with several highly touted colts vying with some late bloomers showing good form. Travkompianet’s Rolling Stones started off his career with eight wins on the trot including the Group I E3 final but has been struggling of late and didn’t make the final of the biggest race of the season, the Trav-Kritierium. Stefan Hultiman’s son of Viking Kronos has the chance to atone here although he again did not flatter in the semifinal, running fourth. He would not need to improve too much to be a major factor in this race. Final Oak was third in the Trav-Kriterium, while AlkalizerAm and Boys Going In also earned a cheque in the Swedish Classic. But the form horse is Call Me Keeper who was very impressive in his semifinal where he recorded his seventh win in just nine race starts. Danel Reden’s son of Pine Chip showed he could make the step up to elite classes with that performance and a similar run here will put him right in contention. The ace pole is taken by Svante Bath’s Poochai who has won his two two races after a short break  after disappointing in the E3 final, which was his biggest test to date. He has the perfect draw to take advantage of his gate speed. Another who is stepping up in class but looked very good in his semifinal is Leif Witasp’s Broadway Hall colt Cool Keeper,  and he is another who could win this if he continues his improvement. Italian-bred Viking Kronos and his sons Going Kronos and Make It Happen  provide half of the field with two apiece, while Olimede is the only representative from the French sirelines in the field which otherwise comprise pure North American sirelines, which perhaps represent their early speed bias. There are two US based sires represented in Muscles Yankee and Broadway Hall. Sweden’s top 3YO filly D’One will not get a chance to emulate her illustrious dam Giant Diablo in winning the Swedish Breeders Crown for 3YO fillies and in her absence there is a wide open look to the final at Eskilstuna tonight. The daughter of Donato Hanover is one of several top earners missing from the final with  Fly The World (3) and Mythical Fortune (6) also missing from the top ten earners of the crop. Robert Bergh’s Swedish bred Amazon Am, a daughter of Gigant Neo, is a rapidly improving filly who was very impressive in winning her semifinal. She won the Group I E3 fillies sprint race in August and is  well positioned to add another Group one to her resume from the number four gate. Neona Princess was fourth in the Trav-Oaks, which was her best result in the big races so far and Peter Untersteiner’s filly is not without a chance in this. She is a great gate speed which she can use to advantage from the number two pole and will probably get the lead. From there this second daughter of Gigant Neo is tough enough to dominate the race and is a very good chance. Roger Walman’s Mellby Briolett was second in the Trav-Oaks and won the E3 final over this trip, 2140m and the daughter of rising Swedish sire Going Kronos is a good chance to add another Group I to her CV if she can get over her poor draw –courtesy of a fourth place in her semifinal. Another improving filly is Pasi Aikio’s  I Am Unique who won her seminfal and has the ace draw. The daughter of Canadian sire Kadabra showed a great finishing burst to win her semifinal and has the perfect draw to figure prominently in this.   Tomas Malmqvist’s Backfire is one of the most consistent fillies in the country, a perrrenial bridesmaid, with second places in both E3 finals and a sixth place in the Trav-Oaks. She has drawn the three pole and has an added bonus with the talented Johnny Takteri n the bike. There are 10 sires represented in the 12 horse field, with a mix right across the board of US imports (4), French (2),  Italy (1) and Swedish (2) bred European ones. Surprisingly Canadian sire Kadabra is the only frozen semen stallion from North America. Rising Italian-bred son of Viking Kronos, Going Kronos and former Swedish star Gigant Neo are the only ones with two entries. REVEN D'AMOUR  (11,73) was our savior last week, although you would not have gotten rich even if you had managed to pick the right selections from our list of V75 contenders. We had six winners somewhere in the seven listed but the payout was poor, and you would have had to have gone pretty wide to have gotten it (7 correct  5,206; 6 correct  55,20; 5 correct  5.90). This week I have narrowed it down further – and have a $5 Harnesslink V75 ticket worked out – which I will be sticking to in the future for continuity. So here are my selections V75-1 V75 International (G2) 2140m:  Look no further than Panne de Moteur (5). Great draw where he will be able to dominate if he makes his usual fast beginning. He also has a great driver and well on his way to being  great horse. So Panne de Moteur an anchor   Selection  5 V75-2 Klass II 2140m: Vacqueyras (4), Talk The Talk (8), Let It Happen (1) and Britt Palema (9) should be on the ticket in a tough field.   Vacqueyras (12) has won his last three starts and could make it four although this is a tough race.  Selection  4-8-1-9 V75-3  Bronze Division: Although Zinedine Bob (1) has a great draw for a horse with speed off the gate, you have to go short somewhere in a V75 and  Robert Bergh’s Laurier Dag (3) would be my single bet off the draw, and I am picking he will make up for the mistake he made in his last race and continue his previous winning form.  So Laurier Dag an anchor. Selection  1 V75-4 Klass I 1640m: Handsome Knight (1) Trust Launcher (5),  VasterboontheNews (11)  and Nimbus CD (12) would be the four to put in the combinations. In Swedish racing around half the races are won from the front, and this is one where the fast starting Handsome Knight (1) holds the ace draw and would be my anchor. Selection   1 V75-5 Stayers Race 3140m: There are a few here with claims, Udo’s Oiler (13) and MT Guti  (5) off the front mark, Zanimede (10) and Sem Jafet (15)  off the 40 metre handicap have to be in the combinations but the one I really like is Jerry Riordan’s Paolo America (12), who went a storming race last start and I reckon can win this at longer odds. Go wide here. Selections  13-5-10-15-12 V75-6 Silver Division 1640m: Democrat (3) is a great off the gate and has a super draw, and Ulf Ohlsson will take advantage to try and dominate from the start. Selection  3 V75-7 CL Mullers Mem (G2) (Gold) 2640m: There is a distinct anchor in the last, although perhaps not as strong as the first leg, with Commander Crowe (9)  will be out to add his third CL Mullers Memorial to his already bulging CV  although he has a bad draw. Caballion (6) will be favourite, while On Track Piraten (8) beat a good field last start but is out on the wings in this while Harry Haythrow (2) has the great draw as has Yarrah Boko (1). But for me The Commander can still win this but it is a tough final leg and we can only pick three to stay inside our $5 bet - but you can go wider if you like. Selection  9-1-6 TOTAL COMBINATIONS  60 – Cost $5 Also here are my win wagers from Jargersro. Next week the French Winter Meeting begins, and I will have selections from that also. JAGERSRO SINGLE WAGERS  $2 Race 5 Panne de Moteur (5) Race 6 Vacqueyras (12) Race 7 Laurier Dag (3) Race 8 Handsome Knight (1) Race 9 Paolo America (12) Race 10 Democrat (3) Race 11  Commander Crowe (9)

The UET Masters Series,  resumes after a week’s break  and Commander Crowe head a top quality field in the CL Mullers Memorial, a Group II international  and one of two Masters Series events at Jagersro, Sweden this weekend. Commander Crowe will be attempting to win his third CL Mullers Memorial, a race that has been an every-present on the Swedish calendar since the 1920s. Fabrice Souloy’s brilliant chestnut won in 2008 and 2009 but that was his last appearance in the 2640m staying race (approximately 1 mile and five-eighths), which has been dominated in recent years by horses with at last some French blood in their pedigrees. Last year’s winner Quarcio du Chene is by Capriccio,  2011’s winner Yellow Eden was by Duc de Bossis, Maharajah the 2010 winner has French blood on his damside. Commander Crowe (himself by Juliano Star)  followed four other winners with French sirelines in Arras (Echo), Garros (Coktail Jet), Spring Ray (Gentle Star)  and Insert Gede (Jet du Vivier). The last horse of American-bloodlines was  the Sugarcane stallion E.V. Cane in 2003. Commander Crowe, although in the last couple of months of his 10-year-old season, has been in good form recently, with a second in the final of the Lotteria a fortnight ago after winning his heat at the re-scheduled Grand Masters event at Agnano, Naples. He will be driven by top driver Orjan Kihlstrom. The Commander will face recently crowned Swedish champion On Track Piraten, who was a surprise winner of the Swedish Masterskap race at Aby, also a fortnight ago. He will be driven by Erik Adielsson for trainer Hans Stromberg. Yarrah Boko, the Norwegian owned and trained son of Coktail Jet was second in that event and Trond Anderssen’s star  lines up again here in his third attempt at the race and has the pole position. Johnny  Johansson’s V75 King Harry Haythrow, who has   drawn two, and Fredrik Larsson’s honest campaigner Caballion are others with a good chance of picking up a decent proportion of the stake. Anders Svanstedt will be in the bike for his dad Ake Svanstedt’s King Conch gelding New Line as the current leading trainer continues his long goodbye to his homeland before his depature to the States next week. The Svenskt Masterskap (SM) or  Swedish Championships   are run Saturday at Aby, but remarkably Elitloppet winner Nahar will not be there. The leading horse by stake earnings in Sweden this year simply did not score enough points to merit entry in the country’s gold medal presentation day. This was despite victories in the Elitelopp final and Norrbotten Stora Pris but a second place behind Orecchietti at Bergsåker recently  meant his points total  for qualification stopped at 2610. But On Track Piraten had accumulated 2673 points. So despite trainer Robert Bergh and owners Canadian Ice Hockey stars  Daniel and Henrik Sedin star having had  6 wins in 19 starts and more than 5,4 million SEK in the bank for the season, putting Nahar top of the money list, it was not enough. So he will have a winter break, without the honour of being crowned Swedish Champion. There will be six gold medals awarded at Aby on Saturday. In the main race Yarrah Boko is owned and trained by Norwegians who claim him as their own, but he was bred at Boko Stables in Stockholm, and he is back in the country of his birth to try and reclaim the SM-Male title that he  won two years ago.  Trond Anderssen’s star started off the year in brilliant fashion winning one of the famed B-races at Vincennes, the Prix de Belgique and won four of his five starts at elite level. Last start winner  Orecchietti returned to  form in brilliant fashion at Bergsåker this month, while Lutfi Kolgjini's Juggle Face has also had a  recent victory in France, and will also have strong support. Also likely to find favour in with the punters is V75 warhorse Harry Haythrow and the  winner of Finland’s Kymi Grand Prix, the roan gelding Womanizer . The second  big feature on the night will be Sto-SM for mares which looks likely to be decided between Daniel Reden’s Muscles Yankee  mare Dileva Kall and Vincennes (Spotlite Lobell) in the hands of Johnny Takter. Gold medals will also be handed to the winners of SM races for Monte, apprentices,   Youth and  Equestrian Championships on the 13 race programme which doubles as the weekend’s V75 meeting.   SVENSKT MÄSTERSKAP Åby  2013-10-12  (G2)   Nat   2640m  all Male  €141,000 1         Juggle Face (h Viking Kronos - Rakel Sund) Dr:   Lutfi Kolgjini  Tr:  Lutfi Kolgjini              2         Yarrah Boko (h Coktail Jet - Big Blue Kitten) Dr:   Ulf Ohlsson Tr:  Trond Anderssen               3         On Track Piraten (g Kool du Caux - Monrovia) Dr:   Johnny Takter  Tr:  Hans R Strömberg               4         Perfect Toll (h Alf Palema - Tvindas S. ) Dr:   Åke Svanstedt Tr:   Åke Svanstedt               5         Deuxieme Picsous (h In Love With You - Carmela Strömline) Dr:   Johan Untersteiner Tr:   Johan Lejon               6         Harry Haythrow (g Rite On Line - Speedy Tilda) Dr:   Peter Untersteiner Tr:   Johnny Johansson               7         Monster Drive (h Thai Tanic - Kewpie) Dr:   Björn Goop Tr:   Reijo Liljendahl               8         Womanizer (g Tap In - Sandra Nibs) Dr:   Tommi Kylliäinen Tr:   Jarno Kauhanen              9         Perfectly Enough (h Express It - Just About Enough) Dr:   Erik Adielsson  Tr:  Stig H Johansson               10       Orecchietti (h From Above - Canneloni) Dr:   Örjan Kihlström  Tr:  Stefan Hultman       SE STO-SM Åby  12/10/13 (G2)   Nat 2140m all mares  €141,000 1         Ariel Boko   (Lemon Dra - Exciting Kronos) Dr:   Per Linderoth  Tr:  Per Linderoth              2         Vincennes   (Spotlite Lobell - Lina Trot) Dr:   Johnny Takter Tr:   Sören Lennartsson              3         Playing Tua   (Gigant Neo - Sandy Nalan) Dr:   Thomas Uhrberg   Tr: Thomas Uhrberg              4         Bell   (Jag de Bellouet - Maxi Limousine) Dr:   Lars-Göran Söderberg Tr:   Björn Svensson              5         Dileva Käll  (Muscles Yankee - Leva Käll) Dr:   Daniel Redén   Tr: Daniel Redén              6         Askens Valencia   (Rite On Line - Staro Ultima) Dr:   Jorma Kontio Tr:   Timo Nurmos             7         Mermaid Ås   (Broadway Hall - Superlou Ås) Dr:   Peter Untersteiner Tr:   Peter Untersteiner              8         Global Kitten   (Striking Sahbra - I Dream the Dream) Dr:   Magnus Jakobsson  Tr:  Magnus Jakobsson              9         Olivia Lavec   (Lindy Lane - Espri Lavec) Dr:   Flemming Jensen Tr:   Flemming Jensen              10        Photo Princess   (Super Photo Kosmos - Milady Hornline) Dr:   Michael Lönborg Tr:   Michael Lönborg     by David Sanders for Harnesslink.com

Orecchietti (6m From Above-Canneloni-Mack Lobell), with Orjan Kihlstom aboard, raced first up in the “death seat” before taking the lead at head of the stretch to win in 1.12.2kr over 2140 meters. The V75 Gold victory was worth 150,000SEK to the winner that is owned by Travkompaniets Stall AB, also owner of Maharajah, and trained by Stefan Hultman. Orecchietti recorded his 15th victory in 32 lifetime starts for life earnings of over 3.95 million SEK. Nahar (8g Love You-Mahonny Broline-Joie de Vie), 2013 The Elitloppet winner with career earnings of over 9 million SEK, followed Orecchietti in a perfect second over spot for Robert Bergh before making a three wide surge halfway through the final turn. Nahar drew dead-even with Orecchietti before the winner inched away in the late stages. Update Hoss (7m Classic Response-Celebrfation Ride-Express Ride) closed late down the middle to be third, driven by Erik Adielsson. The US import Pastor Stephen (5m Cantab Hall-Gala Dream-Enjoy Lavec) finished ninth for Daniel Reden, timed in 1.12.9kr. He was making his second 2013 start. Pastor Stephen, a career winner of 7.2 million SEK, last started in North America in September 2011. The Bergsaker co-featured Silver Division went to Ed You (6g Love You-Lancia Brick-Super Arnie) in 1.10.8kr over 1640 meters autostart. The Robert Bergh trained and driven pupil earned 125,000SEK first money as he defeated Robin Ru (8g Gidde Palema-Ritzy As-Beseiged) with Ulf Ohlsson aboard. Pacesetter Democrat (6g Pearsall Hanover-Sugar Dream-Sugarcane Hanover) ended third for reinsman Orjan Kihlstrom. by Thomas H. Hicks for Harnesslink.com

Former USA 2YO Colt Trotter of the Year, Pastor Stephen, steps up into Swedish elite company incuding reigning Elitppet champ Nahar for the first time since joining Solvalla trainer Daniel Redén when he takes his place in the Norrlandskt Masterskap (Championship) at Bergsaker on the weekend. A million dollar stakes earner with a record of 1.52.4, Pastor Stephen was a sensational 2YO in North America reeling off wins in the Reynolds Memorial, Champlian Stakes, William Wellwood Memorial and Simcoe Stakes for  trainer Juimmy Takter to gain the top vote in the 2YO colts and geldings category with 6 wins and 4 seconds from 11 starts and a record of 1.53.3 and earnings of around $US700,000. The Cantab Hall product of Kentucky’s Brittany Farms but an injury before the Canadian Trotting curtailed his 3YO although he won 4 of 11 starts and won just over $400,000, lowering his time to 1.52.4 with his best finish in the big stakes races being a fifth in the Hambletonian. Interestingly he is the third stallion from that year’s Hambletonian to be now plying his trade in Sweden,  joining that year’s winner Broad Bahn and Currier and Ives winner Fawkes, who was unplaced. Broad Bahn joined Stig Johansson’s stable and has yet to be sighted on Swedish tracks while Fawkes has had success in the ultra competitive elite Swedish ranks, winning the Swedish Group I King Gustav’s Pokal for 4YOs last year. Rated by top driver Yannick Gingras as one of the best horses he had ever driven, Pastor Stephen was urchased by Stall Zet in January 2011. The 3YO injury, though healing, prevented Pastor Stephen racing as a 4YO, although he did stud duties in Sweden serving some top mares such as E3 winner Sweet Desire,  and resumed training this spring, qualifying in Gavle in August. Since then Pastor Stephen has had just one start in a minor race at Gavle last month where he ran second in a sprint over 1640m in 1.12.7ak (1.57MR), interestingly beating home Group I winner Oracle (Ganymede). It is a tough test of his credentials with Robert Bergh’s Elitloppet winner Nahar (7g Love You) in the field and this will also be the first time that Pastor Stephen has raced over more than a mile (not counting the 1640m last start). Orecchietti (6h From Above) ran third in the Group II Arjangs Stora Pris in a top field behind Sebastian K and Formula One two starts back, and will be one of the favourites with Orjan Kihlstrom in the cart. Also in the field are last start winner Rakas (8h Victory Party), who won the 2010 Frances Bulwark and Finnish Group I winners  Up Date Hoss (7h Classic Response) trained by Stig Johansson  and She Loves You (6m Love You), a Finnish St Leger winning mare (and whose dam is a sister to SJ’s Caviar) who has not been in top form since returning from an unsuccessful stint in France. The featured V75 Gold division final at Solvalla on Saturday is the Frances Bulwarks Lopp which also counts as a leg of the Masters Series and has seen  a very accomplished field qualify for this final. Norway’s Yarrah Boko is an undisputed star in his adopted homeland with a raft of international wins in France, Norway and Sweden. He is undefeated in 2013 which started with a win in the prestigious Prix de Belgique at Vincennes in the beginning of the year, where he defeated Royal Dream, a couple of weeks before he won the Prix d’Amerique. The Swedish-bred son of French supersire Coktail Jet and top producing US mare Big Blue Kitten then went off to stud before returning to racing in July, and has not been beaten since with two wins in Norway followed by an eye-catching win in the Uno Sweds Minneslopp in Farjestad a fortnight ago over this very distance where he beat Harry Haythrow and You Bet Hornline who also made the final. Trond Anderssen’s star can win from a mile to two miles as his record of 34 wins in 75  show for earnings of 9.6million SEK or €670,000. His best time over the sprint distance is 1’09”7 (1.52.1MR) and he will be tough to beat from the one pole in the hands of Ulf Ohlsson   Yarrah Boko was second in the Swedish TravDerby in his year as was rising Swedish star Panne de Moteur, who was going for four in a row until beaten last start in the V75 qualifier by Ake Svanstedt’s New Line, a Danish-bred son of King Conch in Bollnas. Panne de Moteur ‘s previous loss was in a qualifier of a previous V75 series, to Monster Drive and Harry Haythrow, but he came back to win the final convincingly in Hagmyren and then backed that up with victory in the Group I Jubileumspokalen, where beat none other than Sebastian K and Save The Quick. Stefan Hultman’s star for the publicly owned Travkompaniets Stall (stable) will be primed for this. Another former age-group star is Kadett CD who won  the Grand Prix de l’UET - which is one of the features the following day at Solvalla - in his year defeating the two French stars Timoko and The Best Madrik. He followed that up a month later with Breeders Crown triumph but it would be fair to say that Robert Bergh’s charge has not reached the heights of the French stars since with only two more victories in the past two seasons. But he has been mixing stud duties and he did come out of that season this year with a win in June, and he has been in the money the past three outings. Magic Tonight is a US import in the Roger Walmann stable and has had two wins and two seconds in six European starts. The four-year-old son of Andover Hall beat a good field of four year-olds including last year’s E3 winner Standout in the Fyraåringsstjärnan last start recently but this is a big step up for one so young. Iceland is a former Elitloppet winner but hasn’t had a win since May last year, and the veteran son of Scarlet Knight hasn’t been in the top three in his last 16 starts. He’s got ace Johnny Takter in the cart and he will need all of his experience and more than a little luck to win this. Former 3YO Breeders Crown winner Perfectly Enough is trained by Stig Johansson but struggling to make an impression in the elite grades so far, while Monster Drive, Harry Haythrow and You Bet Hornline are tough old journeymen, but will need luck to get more than a share of this. It will be a fitting farewell for the US-bound Ake Svanstedt who will achieve the double for the third time  with both Zoogin (Zoot Suit)  and Gidde Palema (Alf Palema) both being trained and driven by the Swede, who has also driven the the most winners with seven. He is not in the sulky this weekend as he was last year, with Jorma Kontio  doing the honours. The race at Aby, south Gothenberg,  has been part of the Swedish calendar since 1936 and has been run in two heats over 1640m and a possible run-off since 2005. It had varied in distance in both heats and as  single race from 2140m to 2640m in previous years. Sebastian K has drawn number 7 in heat one, for Svanstedt, who targeted this race rather than take up his earned place in the Masters Series final, and will be favoured to repeat in what will be one of his last races on his home soil in quite some time as he will relocate to Florida in November. Facing Sebastian K will be two Elitloppet winners in Commander Crowe (Juliano Star), who provided the quinella  in both heats last year,  and Nahar (Love You), who will be in the respective pole and number 2 hole in the first heat – and who then take the outside two slots in the reverse order second heat. Drawn three in heat one is world record breaking  French mare Save The Quick (Jasmin de Flore)  who like the two inside her and The Best Madrik (Coktail Jet), make their first appearances since the Masters du Trot final in France 10 days prior. The French horses were third and fourth in that race and will be looking to emulate Rapide Lebel, who won the race for the Republic in 2011. Italian Alessandro Gacciadoro, who is one of five trainers from the beleaguered country looking to relocate to Sweden, has Looney Tunes, a son of Ganymede entered, and he is drawn 6 in heat 1. Remarkably for what is essentially two sprint races, six of the field are by French stallions with only the two outsiders, both by Supergill,  Traveling Man and Denmark’s German-bred  entrant  Classic Grand Cru, who has shown liking for heat racing over a sprint distance – with a win in the Bjerke Cup in 2012. They will have to both put on performances of a lifetime to foot it with Sebastian K and the big guns.
