Lightly-raced harness racing performer Fletchers Knight delivered a message at Tattersall’s Park Hobart last night that delighted his trainer Zeke Slater. Despite having his first start for six months, Fletchers Knight showed brilliant speed to lead in the Ranvet Pace over 2090 metres and then had plenty in reserve at the business end to score by over 15 metres from Playstationking and Joe Cable. During his previous preparation Fletchers Knight only won once from seven starts before his form waned, with owners Paul and Meagan Carlson taking the son of Safe And Sound back to their property for a lengthy spell. Thrilled with the gelding’s first-up effort Slater believes Fletchers Knight can make steady progress through the grades this campaign. PETER STAPLES

Southern Cross finals day is one of the highlights on the South Australian harness racing calendar and is eagerly awaited each year. It is a highly competitive days racing and unusual for any one sire to dominate. However todays $60,000 finals (Sunday August 3rd) at Betezy Park Globe Derby for the two and three year old fillies were both taken out by daughters of champion sire Grinfromeartoear. First up was the Glenda Fuller trained Whats Emma Got who was settled three back in the running line early in the two year old final from her second row draw. Set alight by driver Danielle Hill after 400 meters, Whats Emma Got looped the field and assumed the pace making role shortly after. Keeping up a steady tempo, she skipped clear at the 400 meters mark and coasted to the line for an easy win. It was Whats Emma Got seventh win from just ten starts with three seconds thrown in for good measure. A daughter of the smart Falcon Seelster  mare Whativewegot 1:59.9 ($66,607), Whats Emma Got paced the 1800 from the mobile in 2:13.7, a mile rate of 1:59.6 with closing sectionals of 58.5 and 29.4 In the three year old final the Courage Under Fire filly Dougs Choice was shooting for fifteen in a row as a three year old. Sent forward from barrier six, Dougs Choice was wide for 400 meters before finding the front in the 2230 meters event. Meanwhile Punch Line who had started from one on the second line was sent forward after 500 meters by driver David Harding and found the death seat with a lap and a half to travel. David Harding and Punch Line continued to apply pressure to Dougs Choice and nearing the 600 meters headed Dougs Choice and set sail for home. Well clear turning in, David Harding eased Punch Line down in the run to the line  for a very impressive win. It was the Emma Stewart trained fillies sixth win from just thirteen starts and she paced the 2230 meters in 2:47.2, a mile rate of 2:00.7 with closing sectionals of 58.1 and 29. Punch Line is from a Classic Garry half sister to former champion Safe And Sound 1:57 ($995,606) and with a winning time of 1:54.2 already beside her name, the residual value of Punch Line when she finishes racing is sky rocketing with every win. The Ararat Harness Racing Club meeting on Wednesday October 24 threw up some surprise results during the evening, one winner scoring his first victory at start number 38, another winning his second race in 109 outings and another registering her 2nd success at start number 71.

Veteran harness racing trainer-driver Mark Geeves doesn't frequent the winner's circle as much these days as he did in his heyday but his latest acquisition Rough And Reckless could have the potential to reverse that trend.
