Syndicate manager David Reid has announced that the 2021 book of World Champion and leading first-crop yearling sire Walner is full and closed.   "Walner has a powerful syndicate behind him that is comprised of a strong group of breeders from the U.S., Canada and Scandinavia," Reid said, "and they continue to support him in a big way."   Walner's first crop of yearlings sold last year, with 71 head averaging $82,197. He ranked second among all trotting sires, behind only Muscle Hill. Twenty of his yearlings sold for $100,000 or more and they included the top-priced yearling of 2020, Kadena (dam, Mission Brief), who brought $725,000 in Lexington.   He sired the fifth-highest priced colt that sold last fall, Kapulet (dam, Tosca), who brought $235,000 at the Standardbred sale at Timonium. Only four colts, all by Muscle Hill, sold for more last year.   "I've spoken with over a dozen trainers who are training colts and fillies from his first crop, and they're all very pleased with their progress at this stage of the year," Reid said.   "Considering his own incredible speed and ability as a 2-year-old, if any sire has the right to make an immediate impact, it's Walner."   Walner 2,1:51.3; 3,1:50.2 ($567,652), by Chapter Seven and from O'Brien Award winner Random Destiny 3,1:54.1 ($658,314), was a World Champion, Breeders Crown Champion and Dan Patch Champion at 2. He retired to stud at Southwind Farms in New Jersey in 2018.   From the Walner Syndicate

Muscle Hill, the leading trotting sire in the world, will be standing at stud at Southwind Farms in New Jersey for the 2017 harness racing breeding season. Although Muscle Hill stood at stud at Southwind Farms in New Jersey for the first four years of his stallion career, beginning in 2014 he was at Marion Farms in New Hope, Pa., so that his foals would be eligible in Pennsylvania. “The reason for the move is we have noticed a marked difference in the stalllion’s libido, health and general well-being upon his return home,” said syndicate manager Mike Klau, noting that Muscle Hill spent the offseason at Southwind in New Jersey, where he was collected for the frozen semen markets in Europe and the Southern Hemisphere. “We feel that it is in the best interest of the horse and the syndicate for him to remain year-round at Southwind.” Muscle Hill has sired the winners of over $11 million, a record for trotting stallions, and has sired four million-dollar winners, led by Triple Crown winner Marion Marauder 3,1:51.3 ($1,484,532), Breeders Crown winner Bar Hopping 3,1:51.4($1,191,195), Yonkers International winner Resolve 1:50.2 ($1,184,780) and multiple stakes winner Southwind Frank 3,1:52.1 ($1,164,468).  He is the leading money-winning sire of 2-year-olds, 3-year-olds and all-age performers from just four crops of racing age. His 2016 2-year-olds were headed by the world champion filly Ariana G 2,1:51.4 ($743,967) and Peter Haughton Memorial winner What The Hill 2,1:54.4 ($315,686). Internationally, Muscle Hill’s son Propulsion just qualified for the prestigious Prix d’Amerique in Paris. At the sales, Muscle Hill’s offspring were in great demand, having the sales topper at both the Lexington Selected Sale (Tactical Landing, selling for $800,000) and the Standardbred Horse Sale in Harrisburg (Story Time Hanover, sold for $410,000). A total of 34 of his yearlings sold for $100,000 or more and the average price for his yearlings was $113,199.

MANALAPAN, NJ - December 11, 2015 - Southwind Farms in Pennington has been selected as the New Jersey Breeder of the Year for 2015, it was announced by the harness racing Breeders Committee of the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey on December 11, 2015. Among the Southwind standouts of 2015 was Southwind Frank, the likely divisional champion among the two-year-old trotting colts and geldings. Southwind Farms will receive the presentation on January 24, 2016 at the 59th Annual New Jersey Breeders Awards Luncheon at 1 p.m. at O'Connor's Restaurant [formerly Charley's Other Brother] in Eastampton, NJ. Southwind Frank, a son of Muscle Hill - Flawless Lindy, won 11 of 12 starts in 2015, earning $786,419 for the partnership of Burke Racing Stable LLC, Weaver Bruscemi LLC, Our Horse Cents Stables and J&T Silva Stables LLC. A $100,000 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale purchase, he was trained by Ron Burke and driven in most of his starts by Yannick Gingras. Beginning with the $100,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Final on July 17 at the Meadowlands, he strung together 10 straight victories, including the $349,850 Peter Haughton Memorial at the Meadowlands, the $283,480 William Wellwood Final at Mohawk and the $600,000 Breeders Crown Final at Woodbine. His record of 1:52.2 was taken on October 8, winning an International Stallion Stakes at Lexington's Red Mile. "Receiving this award is bittersweet," said Laura Young, Southwind's general manager. "It is wonderful we are being recognized as the top breeder in New Jersey, but on the other hand there are not many of us left. At Southwind Farms, we choose to fly under the radar. Sometimes being silent is louder than loud. We have always produced top quality racehorses from our facility. We average 75 percent two-year-old starter and 85 percent three-year-old starter stats, which is pretty impressive for any breeding farm. This does not go unrecognized by owners and trainers. "There are many things that sets Southwind Farms apart from other breeding facilities in New Jersey" she added "Many of these things have assured our survival through tough times. We continue to keep everything we possibly can in-house. We make our own hay and straw, and we outsource very little on the facility. Southwind has also found many other ways to ensure revenue flow to keep us going, such as managing stallions [Muscle Hill, Sportswriter and El Titan] from afar. "Our clients want security," Young noted. "We offer that at every level here at Southwind. From our yearlings to the stallions we manage, our clients feel very secure when they do business with us. That's a rare incentive to offer in today's world. We work tirelessly to make Southwind Farms the best it can be, and we will continue to do so for many years to come." This is the second Breeders Award for Southwind Farms. Founded by Connie & Allen Skolnick in 1986, the farm features 235 acres near the Village of Pennington, NJ. Both Skolnicks passed away in 2013, and the farm is currently owned by their son, Barry. Previous New Jersey Breeder of the Year winners include three-time winner White Birch Farm, two-time winner Perretti Farms, Deo Volente Farms, Valley High Stables, Kentuckiana Farms, Fair Winds Farm, Walnridge Farm and Heritage Hill Farms.
