Athos des Elfes crushed a solid four year-old group in today’s Gr. III Prix du Milan at Enghien-Soisy. Twelve contested the €85,000 European event over 2150 meters autostart and Jean-Pierre Dubois made the pace from post one with his Tast of Bourbon. The Donato Hanover-Qualita Bourbon miss took the field through solid fractions (1.11kr at 1000; 1.10.7 kr at 500) before yielding to favored (odds 7/10) Robert Bi with Dominik Locqueneux up for trainer Paul Hagoort. However, the field closed in and the most powerful finisher was Athos des Elfes (4m Ganymede-Lazio du Bourg) handled by trainer Joel Van Eeckhaute who recorded his 600th driving win, as the pair scored in 1.11.3kr at odds of 3.3/1. The winner secured his sixth career win, now for €229,530.  Alizea du Kastel (4f Quaker Jet-Kaldida Jet) was second for trainer/driver Emmanuel Allard at 32/1. Italian outsider Ruty Grif (4m Varenne-Courer By Pass) was third at 97/1 for Anthony Barrier, teaming for trainer Marco Smorgon. Two other Italians were next across the line with fourth to aforementioned Robert Bi (4m Toss Out-Up Front JM) and fifth to Rue du Bac (4m Infinitif-Ici) for Roberto Andreghetti and trainer Fabrice Souloy. Well respected Akim du Cap Vert finished sixth, Tast Of Bourbon faded to eighth and Rod Stewart was unplaced. The winner’s dam, Lazio du Bourg (Tadzio de la Motte-Fee de Marancourt-Tarass Boulba), was a classic winner of US$1,287,917 and a record of 1:55.1 as she won the Criterium des Ans and was second in the Criterium Continental. Tarass Boulba is a son of Speedy Somolli and he sired the dam (Enfilde) of Prix d’Amerique winner Offshore Dream. Athos des Elfes pedigree is 65% French trotteur and 35% standardbred. by Thomas H. Some of the heavyweights of Swedish racing have made the journey to Norway this weekend as the Scandinavian circuit kicks off with top group racing at Klosterskogen. The meeting is on Saturday is highlighted by the UET Masters Series Klosterskogen Grand Prix over 2100m for a purse of 74,000 euros, one of two group two races to be run, drawing highly competitive international fields. Lutfi Kolgjini's Mosaique Face is the current European Derby and Swedish Derby champion. The stallion son of Classic Photo made his season debut on the 4th of the month running fourth at Mantorp, so will be better for this. Erik Lindegren's Francais du Gull has been in very impressive form lately having won a V75 gold division heat last month and also run second at Momarken, here in Norway, earlier in the year. He won't be meeting the likes of Sanity and Raja Mirchi here as he did last start in the V75 final. These two have the early favouritism in the markets with US import I'm The Answer, a Credit Winner trained by local trainer Frode Hamre Another local hero Thai Broadway is also heavily supported with the only other in the market being Italian-bred Oasis Bi who is now in Sweden with Stefan Petterson and will have champion Swedish driver Bjorn Goop in the cart. The second race of note is the NO Habibs Minneløp, a group two for 4YOs over 2100m, a 200,000NOK (24,175 euros) which has drawn a strong Scandinavian field led by even money favourite Becky's Serious a Staro Showbiz stallion from the local barn of Vidar Holmlund. Frode Hamre has another with a chance here in Mucsles Yankee colt Mustoyevsky who will have Per Oleg Midtfjeld in the cart. Kolgjini never travels with a bad horse and Dante Boko is a colt by boom Swedish sire Going Kronos and is sure to be prominent here. Maharajah's stirring win of today's Grand Prix d'Amerique stamps him as a great horse and his trainer Stefan Hultman and ownership should be commended for their patient preparation for the big challenge. Watch for their comments to take life on Sunday. Thomas H. Hicks

The "awesome" trotting winner is owned by Allevamento G. Biasuzzi and may be the favorite for the Derby Final on December 26. Rotary OK (3m Andover Hall-Miss Possessed-Self Possessed) was second for Marco Smorgon and third went to Royal Blessed (3m Varenne-Ivory Kronos-Viking Kronos) with teamster Lorenzo Baldi. The Lou Guida owned, Jerry Riordan trained Raise Wise As (by Donato Hanover) was fifth reined by Enrico Bellei. Italian Derby Elimination #3 (2100 meters autostart, 22,000 euro purse) went to Red Baron (3m Majestic Son-Check and Balance-Balanced Image) in 1.13.5kr for owner Pella Matteo and reinsman Federico Esposito. He received the benefit of a Riordan stable battle. Rod Stewart (3m Love You-Valley Lane-Lindy Lane), parked by stablemate and filly Rossella Ross, was a game second for trainer Jerry Riordan with Enrico Bellei up. The second dam of this one is Desdemona Hanover (Super Bowl-Descent). Ruty Grif (3m Varenne-Correr By Pass-Donerail) finished third for G-P Maisto ahead of the other Riordan trainee Rossella Ross (3f Self Possessed-Northern Jewel-Balanced Image) in rein to Roberto Andreghetti. She set the pace and weakened late after taking a toll on Rod Stewart. Along with first batteria winner Re Degli Dei (pictured below) the Derby looks to be a competitive affair where racing luck might be a factor in the end result. The final graded event on the outstanding card today was the Gr. II Gran Premio Carena (1600 meters autostart, 55,000 euro purse, four year-old mares) and it went to Peace of Mind (4f Uronometro-Efrica d'Alfa-Sugarcane Hanover) in 1.12.8kr for Andrea Guzzinati and owner Cecchi Leonardo. Close second went to Priscilla Zak (4f Varenne-Flute Grif-SJs Photo) with third to Petra Inn Ronco (4f Cantab Hall-Cynthia del Ronco-Sugarcane Hanover) in a blanket finish in which the top five were clocked in 1.12.9kr or better. Petra Axe (4f Daguet Rapide-Image Deimar-Indro Park) finished fourth ahead of Panthea Club (4f Revenue-Alidora-Probe). by Thomas H.
