Sweden provides an opportunity for stayers to gain valuable UET Masters Series points at Orebro on Saturday night, also doubling as the last leg of the V75. Swedish Masterskap winner On Track Piraten off a 40 metre handicap to the front runners is the class runner in the race. The altered son of French stallion Kool du Caux, is a group one winner over a staying distance having won Germany's top race last year, the Grosser Preis Von Deutschland, at Hamburg over the 2720m distance. Hans R Stromberg's gelding is also the winner of the CL Mullers Memorial over 2640m at Jagersro and the Masterskap or Swedish Championships at Aby over the same distance, both races carrying group two status. His sire Kool de Caux was second in the Prix d'Amerique (2700m) but also had a good turn of speed with victories in the Group one Copenhagen Cup (2011m) and the Prix de France (2100m) in a stellar career in which he won 1.5 million euro and took a record of 1.09.8 (1.52.2MR). "The Pirate's" major opposition will come from the likes of last year's winner New Line a Danish-bred son of King Conch who was trained in the victory by Ake Svanstedt, who of course is now resident in the United States but has transferred the horse to son Anders' stable. New Line has true staying credentials, not only winning this event last year but placing in the Harper Hanovers Lopp, the staying test on Elitloppet weekend, and the Malmo Stads Pris, another 3km marathon. Another with claims is Mellby Viking, the royally bred son of Viking Kronos, who relishes the longer distance. He has a super French pedigree, being from the family of Romee, the foundation mare for a family which includes Prix du Cornulier winner Dream With Me, Indy de Vive, the sire of Ready Cash, Italian Derby winner Daguet Rapide - another highly successful sire - Lazio du Bourg, who won the Criterium des 3 Ans, and Giesolo de Lou, who won just shy of 2 million euro to name but a few. Mellby VIking is very lightly raced, with just 22 starts for 13 wins and two placings, but 3 of the wins are at this distance, and one suspects trainer Timo Nurmos has some choice French missions ahead for the six-year-old stayer who is off the 20m handicap. Porthos Amok is also one who could figure prominently. He is a son of Orlando Vici, a French sire whose son Un Mec D'Heripre is one of the rising stars in his native land. Orlando Vici has also Great Success in Sweden, with Pato a TravKriterium and TravDerby winner while Porthos Amok, himself, was second in last year's Swedish TravDerby. Another Swedish Travderby winner Beau Mec is actually in the race. Robert Bergh's a son of Jag de Bellouet, one of the true greats of the French scene, winning 4.4million euros on the back of victories in both the Prix d'Amerique and Prix Cornulier, the top races in France in harness and under saddle, and each race of the French triple crown. Beau Mec has won twice in France but apart from his Group one Travderby success, has largely been a bit part player since that win as a 4YO. Solvato, a US registered five-year-old son of Donato Hanover-Solveig-Yankee Glide, stormed home for trainer Veijo Hesikanen to wins today's Gr. I Olympiatravet Final over 2140 meters autostart. He earned the first prize of 1.5SEK million ($228,000 US) with this his eighth win in 34 lifetime starts, now with career earnings of 3,818,026SEK. Solvato was a 2013 import from the US that last raced there on May 12, 2013 for Trond Smedshammer. Denco HB owns the winner. Sanity was a good second for Orjan Kihlstrom with Kash's Cantab rallying for third, handled by Erik Adielsson. The race time was a sharp 1.10.9kr. Noras Bean was a late scratch. Summary follows. When getting to the last bend and into the home stretch Solvato surged past the tired leaders and secured an easy win. by Thomas H. Hicks, for Harnesslink.com

Olympiatravet, or the Olympia Trot is the first Group One of the new season for harness racing in Sweden and befitting its history it has drawn a stellar field of Scandinavian trotters. The UET Masters Series race, which has been a fixture at Aby since 1984 is worth 1.5 million SEK (330 000 euros) and is raced over two laps, or 2140m. This is a race whose alumni present a creme de la creme of European racing. Last year's winner was none other than Prix d'Amerique winner Maharajah, while the two previous winners were both Elitloppet winners, Commander Crowe and Brioni. The greatest trotter of all time Varenne won the race twice (2000 and 2002), while US champions who have had a marked impact on the breed in Europe such as Pershing (1979) and Sugarcane Hanover (1988) have etched the name on the honour roll. And a Swedish horse who has repaid some of that debt and influenced modern North American breeding, Meadow Road (the sire of Kadabra), also won the race, back in 1985. A US stallion Texas, is joint top sire with three individual winners in Grades Singing (1987), Karate Chop (1991) and dual winner Copiad (1996-7). Italian-bred but of pure US bloodlines, and the most influential sire of the millennium in Sweden, Viking Kronos also has three winners including Maharajah (who holds the record with 1.11.0 (1.54.1MR)), with stallion sons Triton Sund (2009) and Thai Thanic (2006). Swedish star Gidde Palema with 3 wins in a row from 2003 has won the race more times than any other although four horses have won it twice. Leading the trainers and drivers' honours are legendary horseman Stig Johansson and an addition to US ranks, champion mentor Ake Svanstedt, who have both trained four winners of the race, who by virtue of driving their charges each time, both also top the drivers honours with four. Stig Johansson is back again this year with Kash's Cantab (by Cantab Hall), although he leaves the driving these days to Erik Adielson. Svanstedt of course is busy with Sebastien K, who ran third in this race last year, and the rest of his team ready for a campaign in the States at his Florida base. But there is certainly plenty of stars left in Europe to provide a stellar lineup. How about last year's Elitloppet winner Sanity? Check. This year's Prix de France winner (the biggest race in France over the same distance) Noras Bean? Check. The best horses in Norway (Yarrah Boko ) and Finland (Brad de Veluwe)? Check. Raja Mirchi, who won the top races in Sweden for both 2YO and 3YO and also won this year's Prix Tenor de Baune in France, is also in the lineup. Throw in the in form V75 stalwarts Mr Picolet, Harry Haythrow and Ed You, and the stage is set for a super showdown. Such trotting luminaries as Scarlet Knight and Commander Crowe have won the Gavle Stora Pris in past years, and even the likes of Prix d’Amerique winner Maharajah has  graced this field with his presence as recently as last year. But the cream of the Swedish elite have been plundering France over the past couple of months with the Lutfi Kolgjini-trained colt Olympic Kronos the latest to stick his hoof in the French cookie jar,  while On Track Piraten was second in the Prix de Plauteau de Gravelle on Thursday. Maharajah and Noras Bean won the two group one classics the Grand Prix d’Amerique and  Prix de France respectively while the likes of the Swedish trained Sanity, Global Manhattan and the ex-pat Beckman all winning big races in France this Winter Meeting. Back home Amaru Boko has looked to be finally fulfilling the potential he showed when winning the Group one E3 final over the likes of Duexieme Picsous, Kadett C.D. and Raja Mirchi in 2010. Then trained by Timo Nurmos, the stallion son of superstar French sire Coktail Jet   was third to Orecchietti and Wishing Stone in the Group one Sprintermasteren Final in 2011 and he has won at Gold Division level in the V75, including a win over Beanie M.M. in the Ego Boys Minne in August 2012. He followed that up with his biggest cheque as an open class horse a few weeks later when second to Sebastian K in the group one Sundsvall Open, a UET Masters Series race but his career stalled the next season with just one small win in 2013. But he returned after a four month break in 2014 in Robert Bergh’s stable and has looked a different horse, racking up three impressive wins in a row. Bergh seems to have found the key to the stallion and although he is attempting the three kilometre trip for the first time, should have the breeding to add the storied distance race to his CV. Montgomery Gel has won four of his last six races but has not won over this distance before, with a second and a third his best efforts  in seven attempts at the 3km staying race. Timo Nurmos usually has Jorma Kontio on board the son of jag de Bellouet but  has engaged top Swedish drive Bjorn Goop. The Swedish champ has driven the gelding nine times previously but the last time was in May last year and he has only won once, on his second drive on the horse in September 2009. Francais du Gull, another son of Jag de Bellouet, was third in this race last year and has the credentials to really test this field while Svante Bath’s Labero Broline (Pine Chip)and Ake Lindblom’s Winning Love (Love You) are also getting support in early markets.. Maharajah continues his undeclared path to the Prix d'Amerique with a 2140m V75 gold division race in Aby on Saturday night. 'The Emperor' disappointed his legion of fans, and thousands of owners, last time out when he was Maharajaha well beaten favourite in the Gavle Stora Pris, but he was driven two deep for most of the 3100m journey, and actually went three-wide around Haraldinho to improve his position about halfway through the journey. That extra exertion proved a little too tough in this stage in Stefan Hultman's stable star's preparation, with the 3100m telling on his legs but his handlers will know that this is the sort of run he will need to post to have any chance of winning at Vincennes, where the French horses can go three wide, challenge to improve position and then kick in the straight. Vets gave him the all clear following the run, and the Travkompaniet owners will still be taking it one race at a time as they target the race they covet, the Prix d'Amerique, and this time over this trip he will once again be the punters' choice. His vanquisher in the Gavle Stora Pris was Stig H Johansson's Perfectly Enough, who starts again here. The former Swedish Breeders Crown 3YO winner went a terrific race, driven with cover all the way and then peeled wide from the 300m to unleash a final burst which proved irresistible to the pacesetter Winning Love. Perfectly Enough has a draw which looks like giving him a similar trip again, but the shorter distance may make it tougher to overhaul the horse which gets the lead. US import Solvato has been prominent in early markets and is certainly well-bred being by Donato Hanover from the fine racemare Solveig the winner of $622,714,a Champlain Stakes winner and runner-up in the 2YO Breeders Crown who took a record of 1.56. Like many top racemares though, she has not had the same success so far at stud. He has only won six times in 27 lifetime starts but has impressed his new trainer Veijo Heiskanen since he arrived and won a 4YO race at Kalmar two starts back. But it is a big ask for a 4YO to step up to the Swedish Elite level, even with his breeding. Flemming Jensen's Danish-bred stallion Obi Wan and Lutfi Kolgjini's Juggle Face who will have Johnny Takter on board, are the others with support in the market. Obi Wan, is a son of Ganymede who is one of those French sires who actually does better crossed with American mares than he seems to in his native France, having proven especially successful in Italy and Denmark - another such French sire is Juliano Star, the sire of Commander Crowe and rising stars like Juliano Rags but of seemingly of little consequence in his own country. Obi Wan, who started off his racing in Denmark in Ken Ecce's stable was no age-group star and has taken his time to go through the grades but has improved with age and won six of his 12 races this season. He has been rising through the grades, with a win in the Silverdivision final at Aby in May and now has a respecatable record of 16 wins and 11 placings from 46 starts. Kolgjini's Juggle Face is the same age but has raced thirty more times and could not be more different. His dam is an Armbro Goal half sister to Triton Sund, a winner of more than $2.3 million and a record of 1.52.2 and now at stud after a stellar career. A Swedish Travderby and Breeders Crown winner Triton Sund went on to win several group ones such as Sweden's second biggest race, Olympiatravet and Denmark's biggest race, the Copenhagen Cup and even had a second placing in the Prix de Belgique and raced in the Prix d'Amerique. Juggle Face, who like Triton Sund is by Viking Kronos, won his first four starts as a 2YO, was second in the Breeders Crown at three and won the Solvalla Grand Prix at four. But he has not quite reached the heights of his illustrious relative, who was also trained for a time by Kolgjini although he has won 5.6 million SEK ($860K) and had group wins like the group two Orebro International and Eskilstuna FyraÃ¥ringstest. Maharajah (8m Viking Kronos-Chili Khan-Giant Chill) was a soundly defeated fourth in today’s V-75 Gold (3140 meters autostart, 150,000SEK to winner) at Gavle. Driver Ulf Ohlsson had a tough journey on the outside and his progress was impeded twice during the marathon event. Maharajah began to tire around the final turn and bravely lasted for fourth behind easy winner Perfectly Enough (5m Express It-Just About Enough-SJ’s Photo) handled by Erik Adielsson and timed in 1.14kr. Second went to Winning Love (7m Love You-Falin Amber Dance-Arndon) with Ake Lindblom up with third to Francais de Gull (6m Jag de Bellouet-Tantiem Gull-Lindy Lane) teamed by Erik Lindegren. The Gavle co-featured V-75 Silver went to Chapeau (4m Love You-Crown Tess-Crownton) in 1.12kr over 1640 meters autostart. Erik Adielsson piloted the winner to earn 125,000SEK first money. Sandringham Hanover (6g Cantab Hall-Sally Hanover-American Winner) took second for Lief Witasp. Three upper-class events graced the Paris-Vincennes card. The 100,000 euro, 2700 meter. Prix Chenonceaux (European) went to Vagabondu Mag (4g Ozio Royal-Perle du Ravany) in 1.14.8kr for J-M Bazire. His career earnings now approach 400,000 euro. Red Red Red (5f Offshore Dream-Extreme Lady) was second for Eric Raffin ahead of Unabella Perrine (5f Diamant Gede-Minnie Perrine handled by Franck Ouvrie. The Prix Quimper (European, 2100 meters autostart, 84,000 euro purse) went to favored Beckman (6g Turbo Sund-Nina Palema) for Franck Nivard and trainer Fabrice Souloy. The Scandinavian invader scored comfortably in 1.12.9kr for owner Ecurie Commander. The de Chine (6g Blue Eyes America-Heparine) rallied for second handled by J.L. Cl. Dersoir with third to Nephenta Lex (6f Pine Chip-Miss Camelia OM) driven by J-M Bazire and also trained by Souloy. The 2700 meter, 78,000 euro purse Prix Bagnoles Orne produced a victory for the Jean Baudron owned/trained Rockfeller Center (8m Jag de Bellouet-Mysterious Valley) driven today by Jean-Etienne Dubois in 1.13.9kr. The winner, who also serves as stallion in France, defeated Sam Gibus (7g Jet Fortuna-Harmonie Gibus) with owner/trainer Sebastien Baude up. Travkompaniet Stall AB trainer Stefan Hultman will not confirm Swedish superstar Maharajah‘s annual campaign in France even though he appears  to be giving him a chance to build up his stamina for the great test that is Vincennes in this weekend’s  V75 in the Gavle Stora Pris, being run over 3140m for the first time in 50 years. The Gavle Stora Pris was run over a mile when it was won by Timetosaygoodbye last season and has been raced at various distances between 1600m and 2640m in most years, with the middle 2140m trip the most common distance.  But the time honoured event which has been run since 1942, used to be contested  over 3120m  or 3140m in the 1960s and this is the first time it has been held at 3140m since 1962. But Hultman will not be drawn into speculation on the future racing programme for “The Emporer” the shining jewel of the giant 6000-member Travkompaniet Stall AB syndicate’s big team of top trotters. Stefan Hultman indicated to the Travkompaniet Stall AB’s website that he wants to take one race at a time after the horse's recent  injury problems. Beset with fetlock problems for most of his career, Maharajah looked set to take on the Elitloppet for the first time this year after a brilliant win in the Olympiatravet in record time. But once again the fetlocks flared up and he was denied a chance at Sweden’s greatest race. Bred by US Hambletonian Society member and  President of the Swedish Breeders Association Margaeta Wallenius-Kleberg at her  Menhammar Stud, where he has also stood in the spring for the past two seasons,  Maharajah has won 28 of his 53 starts with 11 placings and earnings just shy of 19 million SEK (€2.11 million). The Prix d’Amerique has always been the connections coveted prize for their superstar after a stellar age-group career which saw him winning both the Svenskt Trav-Kriterium (Gr1 3YO) and Svenskt Travderby (Gr1 4YO) and besting the field in the  Grand Prix De l'UET (Gr1 4YO) – the European Derby. The son of Viking Kronos’ first attempt at Vincennes as a 5YO in 2011 was spectacular with a win in the Prix de Belgique (Gr2 and PDA qualifier) followed by  gallant second placing to Ready Cash in both the Prix d’Amerique and Prx de France. He capped it off with a remarkable win in arguably the toughest of the great group ones of the Vincennes Winter Season, the Prix de Paris over 4150m. Maharajah  finished fourth in the Prix d’Amerique the following season but was disappointing earlier this year when he finished 11th  in the PDA and a fifth place in the Prix de Paris his best effort. But he appeared to bounce back spectacularly with his brilliant Olympiatravet win before his fetlocks flared up again and he went back into stud duties in the spring. He returned refreshed on October 30 after a six month layoff with a stunning win at Solvalla in  1.12,7 (1.57MR) over 2160 meters (vault start), in yet a new National Record. Regular driver Örjan Kihlström was delighted  with Maharajah's performance as he told the ATG site. “He feels nice and fit, couldn’t feel better. That’s essentially the only thing that matters, because we all know how good he is when he is fit. He is far from done. It’s great to feel him in this condition. But Kihlstrom has since succumbed  to a herniated disk injury and for only the third time in 53 starts and the first time in over four years will Maharajah will not be driven by his good mate with Bergsaker’s Ulf Ohlsson taking up the reins as he returns to the V75 for the first time since April 20th, when he won the Olympictravet. World Record holder Digital Ink heads a strong field of 4YOs competing for the group II Solvalla Grand Prix, over 2100m for a purse of  €115,000. His trainer Stefan Melander has five horses in the race and the son of Super Photo Kosmos is straight off the back of a dominant win in the 4YO Swedish Breeders Crown a fortnight ago on Saturday. He has been consistently placed in some of the big 4YO races this season, in what has been a particularly strong crop of 4YOs. He will be partnered with Ulf Ohlsson.   Melander also has Donato Hanover entire Nato Dream,  who was a very handy 3YO, with 5 wins and 4 placings in 10 starts for earnings of 873,135SEK but has struggled this season with only 2 wins in 10 starts. However one of those wins was last start against many of this field in a qualifier for this race, and he preceded that with a promising fourth in a handy field to show he might be coming back into his earlier form. He will be driven by top reinsman Bjorn Goop. Melander will drive Increased Workload (Scarlet Knight) who was third in both the Swedish Derby and Sprintermasteren (both Group ones) while his other charges are New York US (Andover Hall) and Licence Holder (Scarlet Knight). Sure to be prominent will be the German-bred and owned Indigious who easily won the German Breeders Crown last weekend, and is back in Sweden where he is trained by Stig Johansson. The classy stallion was fourth in the final of the Grand Prix de l'UET  (the European Derby) and is a very   good representative of rising French sire Prodigious with 11 wins and 6 placings in his 24 career starts. He will be the main opponent to Digital Ink although he starts off the second line. Johansson also has another very good German-bred  Franco-American entered in Chapeau, who was second in last year’s European 3YO championship at Jagersro. He is a winner of 8 of his 18 starts with an additional 4 second placings and is a very consistent competitor with a nice draw. Roger Walman has the group one winning mare Gisela As (Infinitif) in the race, who was formerly in Ake Svanstedt’s barn. A US-bred daughter of an Italian stallion of French maternal descent, formerly trained by a Swede who now lives in America – is one for the trivial pursuiters. She is one of the best of her gender but might find the males a bit tough, even though she does have a nice draw.
