Invercargill-based trainer Tony Barron is modest about his ability as a horse trainer—he prefers—to let the results on the racetrack do the talking for him.
Barron has been based in Invercargill for eight seasons as a public trainer and from 818 starts his stable has scored 156 wins and $719,308 in purse earnings.
That's a UDR rating of .2937 or a win in every five starts.
Barron has a simple motto he follows when it comes to training racehorses.
“I like to focus on my young stock and getting them up and running and assessing what sort of a future they have on the racetrack,” said Barron.
“I'd like to think that I have a good reputation as a trainer that people want to buy off and my record with horses I've trained that were sold to Australia and the United States is very impressive.
“That's good for the owners in my stable because they know that I'm looking to get a line on their racehorse and that if they're not quite up to a certain level of ability that there are buyers willing to step up and buy off us.

“I train on a 23 ˝ acre property that has a good training track on it and I like to keep my stable up to a maximum of about 20 horses.
“I have a few horses coming in and out of pre-training but I prefer to focus on quality racehorses and not quantity.
“If I don't think a horse is up to it I'm not scared to tell an owner my opinion. Owners are very, very important and as a trainer I feel it's my obligation to be direct in my opinion and assessment of a racehorse.
“I've had a great season with a number of 3-Year-Olds I've had in the stable as we've won 15 races and the good thing is that under the current handicapping system every second win for each horse was penalty free.
“It's great for the owners and also more importantly if reinforces my training methods of assessing each of these horses from day one when they entered the stable and what their future racing options were.”
Barron has developed and sold a large number of quality equine athletes that have performed with distinction in Australia and the United States.

“The pasture grass down in Southland is outstanding and I believe the local trainers prepare a readymade racehorse that can be purchased at a reasonable price.”
