After All, trainer Mark Smolenski has often gone on record as saying he is the fastest pacer he has sat behind.
It’s certainly beginning to look that way after Auditor unwound an electric late charge to out finish his rivals in the $9000 PGG Wrightson Pace (2400 metres) for three and four win horses at Methven today Sunday 15 October.
By his usual high standards, a second and a fifth in his last two starts were probably a shade below par taking into account his big private (and proved) reputation.
But trainer Smolenski was confident the big and roomy Methven track would again allow him to show his true worth after a good trial during the week and so it proved.
Once the trainer’s son Sam Smolenski got serious in the home stretch, Auditor certainly made for an impressive sight to score one of the day’s most eye-catching wins.
Any punter wouldn’t have minded a thousand dollars on Diana May at the 250 metre mark when she surged clear after sitting parked in the running.
The first prize looked hers for the taking when Auditor changed the entire complexion of the finish with a sizzling final sprint that swamped the last start Motukarara winner who deserved a better fate.
Visitors to the Garden City for Cup Week next month can now put Auditor and Les Lisle away in their black book for future reference.
They are certainly two of the Mainland’s finest in their class and poised on the brink of bigger things.
