Make A Memory faced the breeze outside of the odds-on favourite Grand Passion but made light of the task to go on and score comfortably from previously unbeaten filly Shez Rylemak and Jerrys Deception.
The Neville Webberley-trained gelding clocked a sizzling mile rate of 1.58.4 which was clearly the best juvenile rate recorded by a Tasmanian-bred pacer.
Make A Memory (Mach Three-Marlee Jayne) was having his sixth start with this his third win and he was placed second at his other three outings.
Webberley was delighted with the win but tended to play down the time recorded by the impeccably bred gelding.
“He went well tonight and he was probably entitled to run a quick time given the leader ran a very fast first quarter (27.4),” Webberley said.
“Don’t get me wrong, I'm rapt that he's been able to easily break two minutes and especially on the Hobart track because our horses traditionally find it hard to run slick times compared to what they do in Queensland and to a lesser extent in WA,” he said.
Make A Memory's sire Mach Three is definitely making his mark this season with Auckland Reactor unbeaten from 10 starts in New Zealand and last week won the NZ Derby prompting his trainer Mark Purdon to rate him potentially the best he has trained.
Auckland Reactor is now being compared favorably to other star three-year-olds including Courage Under Fire, Christian Cullen, Elsu and Changeover.
Mach Three also sired the NZ Derby third placegetter Fiery Falcon.
Webberley said Make A Memory was heading to the paddock for a short break and be brought back to tackle the Betfair Sweepstakes series and the Dandy Patch (Tasmanian 2YO sires stakes for colts and geldings).
The Betfair Sweepstakes series, comprising heats and finals for both sexes, will be run in May while the Dandy Patch heats will be run in late June with the final on July 13.
“The Betfair Sweepstakes and the Dandy Patch are the two races we have specifically targeted but he also is paid up for the Breeders Crown series so depending how he does in the meantime will depend on whether we head to Victoria for the Breeders Crown,” Webberley said.
The heats of the Breeders Crown series will be run in July-August with the $305,000 final in Victoria at the end of August.
