A stable fire at Riverside Downs, a former harness track that is being used as a thoroughbred training and boarding facility in northern Henderson County, Kentucky, broke out on the morning of Nov. 20. Twenty seven horses were killed. Chief of the Baskett volunteer fire department, Bill Shaw, said emergency dispatchers were called to the scene at around 4:30 a.m. EST. Though no cause or origin of the fire has been determined, he said arson was not suspected.
Marty Maline, executive director of the Kentucky Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, told The Blood-Horse that trainers Bobby Larue, Benjie Larue, Jerry Joe Greenwell, Shirley Greene, Kim Nesbitt, Kenny Miller, and Billy Stinson all lost horses in the fire.
