Trained by Phil Fluet, and driven by John Cummings, Jr., Bluff Point ($5.20) used a strong backside brush to pass tiring leaders en-route to his first lifetime win, after finishing second at Monticello on July 9.
“My plan was to just go to the wood and see how things panned out”, said Cummings. “When I pulled him to the outside, he felt real strong, and was on the best part of the track”.
Two and one-half lengths back in second was Bullish Blue Chip (Howard Okusko, Jr.) while Orecchietti (Kevin Cummings) came in third.
The fastest NYSS race was turned in by Ken Jacobs’ He’s Gorgeous, ($3.30) who paced home in 1:58.4, with reinsman Matt Kakaley at the controls.
“This is one serious race horse”, said Kakaley. “He could be the fastest two-year old colt in New York right now”.
The Art Major-So Ravishing offspring came home a remarkable, :27.2 last quarter-mile, to win by three lengths before the rains came.
Gone Baby Gone (John Stark, Jr.) finished second, and Forty Carrots (James Bailey) came in the show spot.
The other Sire Stakes winners were, Shinedupnreadytogo (Ray Fisher, Jr.) in 1: 59.4, Jerry’s Brown Gold (Dan Cappello) in 2:01.1, and It’sabouttime (Matt Kakaley) in 2:02.4.
Racing will resume on Sunday July 26, with first post scheduled for 1:05 PM.
