Nice Kitty Hanover took a long path to victory in Woodbine Mohawk Park‘s Mar. 4 feature pace as the four-year-old harness racing mare closed from seventh at the quarter to win.
After a recall forced a second start, driver James Macdonald had to drop her back to seventh as her post nine disadvantage outweighed her early speed. She tucked in going to the quarter in 28, but Macdonald pulled her back to the outside going by three-eighths as the leaders battled. Nice Kitty Hanover finally drew cover going past the half in 57.2, and she sat third-over at the three-quarters in 1:26.4.
She fanned out turning for home and responded with plenty as MacDonald asked for late pace. The Somebeachsomewhere mare took aim at leader Powered by Mach (Chris Christoforou) and closed three lengths in the final eighth of a mile to win by neck. Powered By Mach was second, and Happy Looker (Doug McNair) made up ground late to take third.
This conditioned win was her fourth victory from 10 starts lifetime for Millar Farms of Stouffville and trainer Nick Galluci. She stopped the clock in 1:57.1 and paid $3.20 to win.
Mohawk will return on Friday, Mar. 5.
