The harness racing win of Auckland Reactor gelding Jazzy Star had to be seen to be believed at Addington on Friday night.
At the turn you would have said the chances of the speedy 4yo winning looked hopeless as he was last on the fence with a wall of horses in front of him, and even with 100m to go when he was still looking for room you would have thrown your win ticket into the bin.
But driver Stephen McNally had other ideas and when he finally extricated Jazzy Star into the clear and pulled the plugs the response was immediate.
The Brent White trained Jazzy Star grew wings over the last 50m and collared the leader Jay Tee Tyron right on the line eventually winning by a neck.
In the end the only surprising thing was the price. Opening around $3.60 on the FF win market, off the back of a scintillating Ashburton workout where he sat parked and ran his last 800m in 55.5 seconds under a stranglehold, Jazzy Star (Auckland Reactor – Shikaka) drifted in the betting and ended up paying $7.10 and $2.70 on the tote.
The progeny of Auckland Reactor also had a win in the North Island last night when Akarana Prince (Auckland Reactor – Love To Travel) led for most of the way and won his first race at Alexandra Park.
Brent Mangos was in the sulky for the win and the trainer was Tim Vince.
Akarana Prince won by 2 3/4 lengths and paced the 2200m mobile in 2-46.1 seconds.
