The ICE Bloodstock New Zealand Harness Racing Awards held at in Christchurch tonight (Saturday July 28) were a Ken and Karen Breckon benefit.

The couple, who own Breckon Bloodstock, picked up six awards at the annual dinner held at the Wigram Air Force Museum.

The one they will cherish the most is I Can Doosit's 2011-2012 Harness Horse Of The Year award. It was a unanimous decision with the son of Muscles Yankee claiming all 37 votes.

Who else could the judges vote for after the hugely talented 6-year-old won 13 of his 15 starts, including the last 12 in a row.

The brown gelding's five Group One victories in 2011-2012 came via the Inter Dominion Grand Final, The Rowe Cup, The Anzac Cup, the NZ Trotting Championship, and The National Trot.

So it came as no surprise that I Can Doosit was also named the Trotter Of The Year and the 5yo and Older Trotter Of The Year.

All-up I Can Doosit has now won 29 of his 46 starts and placed six times for $1,092,848 in purses - $621,764 of it won this season.

The Waikato based Breckons also won the Owner Of the Year Award. I Can Doosit's late dam - Sheezadoosie (by Chiola Hanover) was also named Broodmare Of The Year. They were also named Breeders Of The Year.

There was also a sombre moment when Paramount Geegee was named 4yo Trotting Entire or Gelding Of The Year.

The promising 4-year-old son of Pegasus Spur was electrocuted in May. He died the winner of 17 of his 30 starts and just over half a million dollars in purses.

He received 17 votes - three more than the Colin Butler trained Charlemagne.

One of the highlights of the evening was former Harness Racing New Zealand chairman, Jim Wakefield (MNZ), winning the Outstanding Contribution to Harness Racing award.

Wakefield served on the HRNZ Board for five years. He was just this year awarded a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for his services to harness racing.

He represented the NZ Trotting Owners Association on HRNZ's Executive from 2000 to 2010, being Chairman from 2000 to 2003. During this time Jim played a key role in promoting a number of changes, in particular the development of the Racing Act 2003 on which the current industry is structured.

From 2003-2006, he was HRNZ's inaugural appointment to the New Zealand Racing Board. In partnership with his wife (Dr Susan), Wakefield has bred and raced a number of horses, including leading performers Sparks A Flyin, London Legend, Bettor's Strike and Texican.

Mr Pat O'Brien, HRNZ's Chairman, said Wakefield gave outstanding contribution to the industry in a number of areas over an extended period.

"As HRNZ's Chairman Jim was a strong and passionate leader with great integrity. Not only has he has provided a significant contribution as an administrator, Jim has been, and continues to be, heavily involved as a breeder and owner.

"Harness racing is certainly richer for the involvement of Jim Wakefield. Congratulations," O'Brien said.
