Harness racing driver Tyler Borth concluded his three-win night with a second-over trip and three-wide move to win the Raceway at Western Fair Tuesday feature.
Borth and his drive Homey Joe started last, avoiding a battle royale for the early lead. They held second-over cover for half of the mile before they made a sweeping move on the turn and had sufficient pace down the lane to take the Preferred 3 dash.
The three inside starters, Maximus Power, Jake Loewen, and Adore Him all desperately wanted the early lead and fought for it side-by-side through the first turn. Jake Loewen won the battle, eventually clearing to the front in a quick 27.3 first quarter. Maximus Power accepted the pocket, and Adore Him backed off into the three-hole. Mr Mach Jimmy moved first-up immediately following the duel and Homey Joe followed him into the outside flow.
Jake Loewen continued leading to the half in 57.4, setting a more reasonable second quarter. He held Mr Mach Jimmy to a length behind through the third quarter in 1:27.2, but those two were met by a three-wide Homey Joe turning for home. Jake Loewen and Mr Mach Jimmy drew level in mid-stretch, but Homey Joe flew by on the outside with a 1/16th of a mile left, winning by a length and three quarters. Mr Mach Jimmy did get past to finish second and Jake Loewen was game in third.
Homey Joe took his 16th lifetime victory and added the winner's share of an $8,500 purse to his earnings of $152,838 for owners Mark Macquarrie and Angus Mac Quarrie. Macquarrie trains the seven-year-old pacing horse by Hes Gorgeous.
The Raceway will continue racing tomorrow (Tuesday, Feb. 23) with a 10-race card starting at 5:50 p.m.
