It may have taken Democracy ten starts to win his first race, but the Nigel McGrath trained 4yo looks like he has well and truly hit his straps now. Today's (Wednesday February 6) $18,000 harness racing feature was the son of Christian Cullen's fifth career win and fourth in his last eleven starts.

Those five wins include the inaugural running of the Show Day Futurity, the Waimate Cup and now the Amberley Cup.

Democracy was driven by his regular pilot Matthew Williamson, who adopted his usual tactics on the horse- get to the front, lead and try and stay there until the finish line.

Stay in front until the finish line he did, albeit by the barest of margins.

Grass track special Eyre County closed like a steam train to just miss by a miniscule half head with a further two lengths back to Lively Shard.

Democracy showed some of the tendencies that kept him a maiden for 9 starts straight after the line, when he blasted into a gallop, but that doesn't matter as he was still down and pacing where it counts; the finish line.

Democracy is owned by Ann Seaton, who is no stranger to the winner's enclosure being the wife of the late John Seaton, who was Harness Racing New Zealand Owner of the year in the 2001/2002 and 2003/2004 seasons.

"I only have a few horses these days just to maintain an interest," said Ann Seaton.

"All of them are trained by Nigel McGrath," she added.

Democracy was purchased by McGrath for Seaton at the 2010 Australasian Classic Yearling Sale for $60,000.

"He is doing a good job at the moment, he does still have a few tricks up his sleeve, but Matthew (Williamson) seems to get on really good with him"

"Obviously i'm not as heavily involved as I once was, but I still follow all the racing and the breeding, and have the odd bet," said Seaton.
