Last season's Southland Three Year Old Pacer Of The Year Guns And Roses made a triumphant return to the race-track at the Wyndham Harness Racing Club's meeting held today (Sunday).

The Tom Kilkelly and Tracey Sherbourne trained son DM Dillinger made short work of the opposition even given the gelding's lack race hardened fitness. "Tracey wasn't overly keen on me starting him today, but I've been getting sick of not having a decent horse at the races," said co-trainer and owner Tom Kilkelly.

"He's only had one workout and was well short of his best today, but he's very athletic type of horse and he looks after himself in a way. The race really played into his hands but Becky (Allan Beck) said he needed the run." As it turned out Beck was able to dominate proceedings pushing forward early from a handy barrier, before sprinting homein sectionals of 57.8 and 27.6 to score by 3/4 length from Flying Diamonds in a time of 1.58.7 for the flying mile."It was like a trial today only we got paid for it," said Kilkelly, who is also president of the Invercargill Harness Racing Club and heavily involved in the administration side of the industry.

"I know there's not a lot of money going around at the moment and we may head to Auckland with this guy to race for better stake money, but he will back up somewhere local in around two weeks, I'm just not sure where at this stage." The Kilkelly/Sherbourne partnership will have other stable-stars Ask McArdle and Shard Ark at the races inside the next month, both are not far away from a resumption but are likely to have further trials before venturing out on race-day. "They're different horses than Guns And Roses, they take a little more work to have them fit. Im really happy with Western Arden too, she's come back real nice."

Guns And Roses has now won seven races from just 15 starts.
