Hoosier Cup

A harness racing field field of nine will assemble for the final $500,000-est. Hoosier Cup at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino Saturday, June 25. The race, carded as the 12th on the 14-race program, will have an estimated post time of 9:30 p.m. EST. It will also feature a $20,000 guaranteed Superfecta Pool, adding a spark of excitement to the event. The Hoosier Cup will be discontinued after the 2011 event.

Heading the list of entrants is Big Bad John, who ventures to Hoosier Park off a fifth place finish in the $1.5 million North America Cup at Mohawk Raceway last week. The three-year-old son of Western Hanover was a winner in his elimination to earn his fourth win in five starts for 2011. Trained by Ron Potter, Big Bad John will be accompanied by regular driver Brett Miller from post six.

Another major threat for the 15th edition of the Hoosier Cup is Custard The Dragon, who is one of four horses entered in the event by trainer George Teague. The three-year-old Dragon Again colt was third in his last start out in the consolation of the North America Cup. Sporting the most earnings this year, Custard The Dragon starts from post three for driver Montrell Teague, who becomes the youngest reinsman to ever drive in the Hoosier Cup at the age of 20.

All four entrants from the Teague Stable will be uncoupled for wagering purposes. They include Custard The Dragon, Feel Like A Fool, Wink N Atcha, and Wind Me Up. A win in the Hoosier Cup by one of Teague’s entrants would be his third win in the stakes race. The Harrington, Del. Native also earned wins with Total Truth in 2006 and Mr Wiggles in 2009. Both horses are currently standing at stud in the state of Indiana.

The entire Hoosier Cup field, in post position order with driver and morning line odds, includes: Townslight Hanover (Trace Tetrick) 4-1, Samandar (Peter Wrenn) 8-1, Custard The Dragon (Montrell Teague) 7-2, Alsace Hanover (Scott Zeron) 6-1, Feel Like A Fool (Peter Wrenn) 10-1, Big Bad John (Brett Miller) 3-1, Major Male (Dave Magee) 15-1, Wink N Atcha (Yannick Gingras) 10-1, and Wind Me Up (Sam Widger) 9-2.

In addition to the Hoosier Cup, which is the richest Standardbred race offered in the state of Indiana, nine divisions of the final preliminary rounds of the Indiana Sires Stakes will be contested, setting up the fields for the final during Hoosier Champions Night, Saturday, July 16. The $40,000 divisions will push total purses offered for Hoosier Cup Night to $921,000.

Also on the program is a half-mile Open III Trot, featuring a field of nine in race four. The race will set the scenario to break the world record for a half-mile distance on a mile or seven-eighths mile oval. The current record of :58.1/4 was set in 1925 by Temple Harvester at Aurora Downs. Marvin Childs drove the four-year-old trotting gelding by The Harvester.
