For the first time since coming to the United States, Sebastian K won a race slower than 1:51, but he still looked very impressive in doing so. The eight-year-old stallion posted a four-length easy triumph in 1:52.2 in capturing his $40,000 elimination division for the Maple Leaf Trotting Classic at Mohawk Raceway Friday.

Facing just five rivals with one to be eliminated from the $603,000 final next week, Sebastian K and trainer/driver Ake (pronounced Okka) Svanstedt of Sweden wasted no time shooting right to the lead from post six.

With Archangle (Sylvan Filion) also leaving and grabbing the two-hole spot behind Sebastian K, they went to the opening quarter mile in :26.4. Svanstedt then wisely backed down the pace with a :30.1 second quarter, going to the half mile in :57. As they started down the backstretch, Sebastian K held the field at bay until the three-quarters in 1:25.3.

At that point, as Wheeling N Dealin (Jody Jamieson) came first-over, Filion left the pocket-seat and came after Sebastian K as they started down the stretch. After looking at the first real challenger since coming to America, Svanstedt spoke to his horse, raised his lines a little and Sebastian K dug in and pulled away from the field to win going away. Creatine (Michel Lachance) was second with Archangel third.

Also making it to the final next week was Wishing Stone in fourth and Flanagan Memory was fifth.

“It was somewhat easy,” Said Ake Svanstedt, “Which is good for him. He needed an easy race. He can leave very fast and now I can control him so he is very good on the lead.”

With five straight wins since coming to the USA from Sweden, Sebastian K now sports nearly $2.5 million in career earnings. The son of Korean is owned by Knutsson Trotting of Vero Beach, FL and has 31 career wins, mainly in Europe.

Sent off as the overwhelming 1/9 betting favorite, Sebastian K paid just $2.10 to win. The race was limited to just win wagering, no place or show but the betting fans still jumped on Sebastian K. Of the estimated $50,000 wagered in the win pool, nearly $47,000 was bet on Sebastian K to win.

Without Sebastian K to compete with, Market Share looked like the champion of old as he was able to come first-over and grind his way to an impressive 1:53 triumph to win his $40,000 elimination division of the Maple Leaf Trot at Mohawk Raceway Friday.

Three early lead changes from the start saw race favorite Modern Family (James MacDonald) then DW’s NY Yank (Randy Waples) exchange leads to the opening quarter mile in :27.1. Then it was Intimidate with Sylvain Filion rushing up to take command by the half mile marker in :56.2.

Then as Mister Herbie and driver Stephen Condren started up first-over from fifth place and that flushed Tim Tetrick with Market Share and they marched up to join the race leaders by the three quarters in 1:26.

As they started down the stretch was when Tetrick asked Market Share for some speed and he responded by pulling away from the field and winning by two and three-quarter lengths. Mister Herbie came on for second place with Undercover Strike (Doug McNair) third. Also making it to next week’s finale were Modern Family in fourth and Intimidate fifth.

“He loves to travel,” said trainer Linda Toscano of Market Share. “And it’s a nice cool night here in Canada and does love this track. I really did not want to see him first-up, but it turned out really well and I am tickled with him.  For the final next week this is one of the deepest fields of trotters we have seen in a long time. They are all good and the other one (Sebastian K) is just a freak.”

It was the third win in seven starts this year for Market Share. The five-year-old stallion by Revenue S is owned by Richard Gutnick, the T L P Stable and Bill Augustine. He paid $5.30 to win as the second choice in the race.
