Though the Roses Are Red and Armbro Flight stakes finals are the highlight of Saturday night’s race card at Mohawk, there’s plenty more action to be enjoyed as the $18,000 first leg of the Summertime Pacing Series gets underway that evening.

Three flights of three-year-old pacers will go postward in this series designed for non-winners of two races or $10,000 lifetime, as of March 31, 2008.

In the first division (race #3, post time 8:12 p.m.), Space Walk, trained by Brad Maxwell and driven by Tim Tetrick, is the oddsmaker’s first choice at 2-1. The son of Dragon Again * Galaxy Hopper was a creditable second in the Pepsi North America Cup consolation to the stakes-record-smashing Up Front Hannashboy, and has scored four wins and a second from nine starts in 2008. He’ll be leaving from post six in the nine-horse field.

Windsun Thunder, in the second division (race #6, post time 9:15 p.m.) may be the horse to beat. No worse than third in his last seven starts, and a solid second in his first stakes effort (May’s Diplomat Stakes final at Mohawk), this son of Cams Card Shark is conditioned by Bruce MacDonald of Alliston, Ontario, and is rated at 2-1 leaving from post position #3. Roger Mayotte will undertake the driving duties.

Trainer Duane Marfisi is sending out Smile Fromeartoear in the last of the three divisions (race #9, post time 10:18 p.m.). This colt by Grinfromeartoear was unraced at two and has only two lifetime starts under his belt, but he visited the winner’s circle in both attempts, making him the 9-5 first choice on Saturday night. Tim Tetrick will be at the lines for this promising colt who’ll be leaving from the inside post position in an eight-horse field.

The second leg of the Summertime Pacing Series is scheduled for the following Saturday, July 5, and the $60,000 final will go July 12.
