Chip Chip Conway slogged first-over through the mud to emerge victorious in the Monticello Raceway harness racing Open trot on Wednesday.
He dropped in fourth heading for the first turn and was three lengths behind cover going past the quarter in :29.1. Jim Taggart Jr. tipped the gelding to the outside as the six-horse field rounded into the stretch to complete lap one, and the pair advanced uncovered as they completed the second panel in :59.4.
Kabang (Michael Merton) remained steadfast on the lead, holding Chip Chip Conway to his shoulder before exploding off stride going past three-quarters in 1:29.3. Chip Chip Conway held his two closest challengers at bay throughout the final quarter and crossed the finish line a length and a quarter ahead in 1:59.3.
Superiorcourt (Greg Merton) followed the winner’s cover to take the place spot. Shoot The Thrill (Brandon Parker) galloped across the wire and was therefore disqualified and placed fourth by the stewards. Four-to-five favourite Cinnamon Stick (Bruce Aldrich Jr.) was the beneficiary, as he was promoted to show.
