April 2, 2017 - Weekend Italian harness racing action began Saturday at Torino where the Gr.  II Premio Societa’Campo di Mirafiori was contested over 1600 meters autostart for a total purse of €66,000. Timed in 1.11.9kr, the winner was Super Star Reaf (6f Varenne-Fantastica Star-Lemon Dra) with two-length score for driver David Di Stefano. Renella Pasquale bred the winner that defeated Scuderia Bolgheri bred Rue du Bac (7m Infinitif-Lci-Diamond Way) reined by Federico Esposito. Third was Yano Fohle SM (5m Ganymede-Fohle BSM-Sugarcane Hanover driven by Antonio Di Nardo. On the same card in the Premio Lana del Rio (purse 12,100, 1600 meters autostart) another Scuderia Bolgheri was victorious, as Nuage En Ciel (10m Daguet Rapide-Pretty Perle-Extreme Dream) scored timed in 1.12.3kr for Mass. Costaldo. At Roma the Premio Entella As (purse €15,400, 1640 meters autostart) went to 1.12.6kr timed Specialess (6m Ganymede-Enna Dra-Indro Park) driven by Roberto Vecchione. Federico Esposito teamed Radiofreccia FI to a comfortable win in today's E209,000 Gran Premio Continentale Open at Bologna Italy. The winner covered the 2060 meters autostart course in 1.13.4kr to defeat Royal Blessed with reinsman Wm. Paal and Real Mede SM with Allessandro Gocciadoro up. The beaten field included well regarded Rod Stewart, Rossella Ross and Re Italiano UR. The winner is a four year-old daughter of Ganymede from Castilia by Lemon Dra and now shows 11 career wins in 33 starts. The companion Filly Division for E55,000, and raced over 1660 meters autostart, went to four year-old filly Rania Lest with Roberto Vecchionne aboard. The winner, now with 11 victories in 18 outings, scored easily in 1.13.7kr over Rodeo Drive OK handled by Pietro Gubellini with Royal Rock finishing third. Three eliminations for the October 5th 87th Italian Derby took place today at Roma Campanelle, in the right-handed direction. Each elimination was raced over 2100 meters autostart for €22,000. Stankovic OK (3m Self Possessed-Flavia Kronos-SJ’s Photo) romped by six lengths in 1.13.3kr in the first battery for Enrico Bellei. Specialess and Swan Wise As trailed the impressive, bold striding winner. This elim was the fastest of the day. Stankovic Ok Pietro Gubellini teamed Sharon Gar to victory in the second elimination timed in 1.14kr. The pair ended two lengths up over Saba de Ronco and reinsman Enrico Bellei with Skyline Dany third. The winner is a three year-old daughter of Varenne from Geneve Gar by Lemon Dra. Sharon Gar The impressive Sceicco (3m Look de Star-Iuta-Viking Kronos) took the final elimination in 1.13.8kr by open lengths for Andrea Guzzinati over Sansone Bar and Santiago d’Ete. Sciecco (3m Look de Star-Iuta-Viking Kronos) took Saturday’s €154,000 Carlo Marangoni Memorial Open at Torino, Italy for Andrea Guzzinati. The long-striding chestnut winner recorded his fifth win in 16 outings, now for earnings over €265,000. Sciecco covered the 2100 meter autostart course in 1.14.9kr. Sing Hallelujah (3m SJ’s Caviar-Mystic Hanover-Donerail) was second for Roberto Vecchione Jr. with third to Superbo Capar (3m Calypso Capar-Dark Degi Ulivi-Indro Park) with Jos. Lombardo Jr. aboard. The filly Sister Dany Bar (3f Love You-Red Hot Action-American Winner) ended fourth for Marco Smorgon. The €55,000 Carlo Marangoni Filly went to Simona Om (3f Uronomtro-Keystone Frizzle-Balanced Image) in rein to Roberto Andreghetti. Simona Om won for the sixth time in 17 starts, covering 1600 meters autostart in 1.13.8kr in a rousing finish with three other rivals in the picture. Mack Grace SM (8m CC’s Chuckie T-Ambro Grace SM-Armbro Goal) won his elimination heat and the final of this Gr. I event over 1640 meters autostart timed in 1.12.5kr (final) at Ippodromo Sesana un Italy on Friday. The Roberto Andreghetti reined, Lucio Colletti trained veteran won both with relative ease to secure his 55th career win in 100 starts, now with earnings in excess of €1.6 million. Purse of the two eliminations was €14,300 and the final went for €103,400. Owen CR (6m Cantab Hall-Boemia CR-Lemon Dra) won the first elimination in 1.12.7kr and was a solid second in the final for Pietro Gubellini. Louvre (9m Piccardo-Defile-Ganymede) with Federico Esposito, Papalla (5f Varenne-Day Love Blue-Ganymede) reined by Marco Stefani and Nonant le Pin (7f Goetmals Wood-Blazing Janice-Pine Chip) with Alesaandro Gocciadoro earned third through fifth. The Gran Premio Riccardo Grassi at Cesena carried a purse of €45,100 in the 1660 meters autostart contest. The new Breeders Course European series for two and three year-old trotters began Sunday at Ippodromo di Agnano. Sixteen Italian three year-old  trotters competed in two eliminations. The fastest winner was Specialess driven by Andrea Vitagliano in an impressive 1:12.1kr over 1600 meters autostart. The second winner, Sugar Rey with Paolo Romanelli up, was timed in 1:12.5kr.  Four of top six finishers are by French sires with the other two by legendary Varenne. The two winners are qualified for the July 29 final (€120.000 guaranteed) final at Jägersro, Malmö. Should one or both winners refrain from participating in the final, the second place finisher(s) will be qualified. The breeders of all money-earning horses in the two eliminations will receive an extra 10% of the earnings in the race from Breeders Course funds. Commander Crowe (11g Juliano Star-Somack-Mack Lobell) took Saturday’s AZ Turf Summer Cup at Victoria Park Wolvega (Netherlands) for reinsman Robin Bakker. The 2100 meter autostart course was negotiated in 1.15.7kr. Bakker put the champion, a career winner of over US$4.7 million, on the lead, yielded briefly and then regained the front that he held to the line by less than a length. Purse was €5,000. Andrly Fortune and Zorba Oldeson trailed the winner. Robert Bi (4m Toss Out-Upfront JM-Self Possessed) also continued his comeback at Wolvega in the Halve Finale Criterium der Vierjarigen. The Italian Derby winner and  2013 Horse of the Year in Italy won easily on the front-end by two lengths. Bakker teamed this winner for trainer Paul Hagoort. Robert Bi negotiated 2100 meters autostart in 1.14.1kr, defeating Davy Boko and Diamond. Purse was €3,000. Italian’s were further evident on the Wolvega card. Hugo Langeweg Jr. teamed Sammath Naur Baba (3f Love You-Elizabeth Bi-Toss Out) to victory. Second dam of this winner is the Sugarcane Hanover mare Zvetland Bi. Solid trotting took place during the past week at various European venues. Coverage below is of racing at Jagersro (SWE), Avenches (Switzerland), Mantorp (SWE), Kincsem Park (HU), Bologna (ITY) and Paris-Vincennes where Gr. III events were featured on June 3. The Prix Caecilia went to the rallying roan Meaulnes du Corta filly Arpent d'Ostal for J-Ph Mary. The same day the monte Prix Dido went to Buffalo de Beylev for Yohan Lebourgeois, winning as the 2/5 favorite should. On June 2 at Bologna, the Premio GP Republica went to Papandreu for Enrico Bellei. The five year-old son of Abano As scored in 1.12.7kr over 1660 meters autostart for winners' share of a purse of €45,100. Oncle Photo VL took the co-featured Invitational on that card and veteran classmaster Italiano won the Greyhound Invitational that same day at Follonica. On May 31 at Mantorp (SWE) the Ina Scots went to Remo Gas (four year-old son of Varenne) for teamster Erik Adielsson. The V75 Gold produced a victory for Porthos Amok (five year-old son of Orlando Vici) and Orjan Kihlstrom. At Kincsem Park, the featured Tony Oaks DIJ went impressively to Orangyal (six year-old daughter of Wall Street Banker) for reinsman Pal Vicen and at Avenches the Grand Prix 5Ans (Suisse) went to Playboy Wind (five year-old son of In Love With You) and trainer/driver Wilhelm Paal. On May 29 at Jagersro, the Jerry Riordan trained Sylvester America (3m Varenne-Armbro Voice-Gaerldan Lobell) recorded his first career victory in his third start for driver Linda Allerecrantz. Italy's top trotting campaigner, Mack Grace SM (8m CC's Chuckie T-Ambro Grace SM-Armbro Goal), won the prestigious 65th edition of the Gran Premio Lotteria at Naples Italy. It was the third straight year that Mack Grace has won the premier harness race as he becomes only the fourth horse ever to have won the race three times since it started in 1951. Handled by Roberto Andreghetti the veteran was at his best and dominated the competition winning the final in 1.11.06kr and his elimination in 1.11.25kr. Mack Grace SM now has 48 victories for earnings of 1,496,431 euros for owner Stall Royal Horse Srl. The eliminations (each with a purse of 20,900e), final (400,400e) and consolation (42,900e) were raced over the 1600 meter autostart distance.
