The historic Saint-Legers des Trotteurs meeting kicks off today at Caen with a 2450m UET Masters series race, the time honoured Prix des Ducs de Normandie a group two worth 150,000 euros, in honour of a famous trotteur of the 1920s who won the 1928 Critrerium des 3 Ans and went on to be equally successful at stud. The son of Salam was a prolific broodmare sire, and one his daughters produced the dam of Feu Follet, one of France's most influential sires. Duc de Normandie's influence is still felt today, with last year's Prix d'Amerique winner Royal Dream (Love You) decending from one of the great horse's daughters Rose Marie IV, while two of France's successful sires Copenhagen Cup and Prix de France winner Kool du Caux and Criterium des 4 Ans winner Rolling d'Heripre (Dahir de Prelong) also trace to the great Duc on the maternal line. Rolling d'Heripre is represented by Blooma d'Heripre in the Saint-Leger des Trotteurs which is one of two of France's most famous monte races which are run later today. Indeed it was under saddle that some of Duc de Normandie's descendants excelled with top sire Gai Brillant (Podosis) and Fine Perle (Marpheulin) both being Saint-Leger winners themselves, while the monte millionaire of the 1990s Arcadia (Jiosco) won the Prix du Cornullier. As befitting a race named after one of France's great stallions, some of giants of the game who have gone on to make their mark in the breeding shed feature heavily in the honours roll. Reve d'Udon, a remarkable racehorse in his own right, a Criterium des 5 Ans winner in the bike and a Prix du Cornulier winner under saddle, is the grandsire of none other than Market Share, and he won this race twice in 1989 and 1990. The world's leading sire for the past two seasons, Love You also won the race twice in 2004-2005 and he is represented in the Prix Henri Balliere later in the day by the hot favourite Airport and a second entrant in Aglite Jenilou. Another former Prix de Ducs de Normandie winner is France's champion monte stallion Goetmals Wood who is the sire of top Saint-Leger chance Bomba. The last two seasons the race has been won by Texas Charm, who was the favourite for this year's Prix d'Amerique until injury, while the previous two winners were emerging sire Quaker Jet ( a son of Love You) and Prix d'Amerique winner Oyonnax (In Love With You). Jean-Paul Marmion's Roi du Lupin is the early favourite for this year's renewal, narrowly from Cedric Megissier 's Uhlan du Val and Fabrice Souloy's Quinoa du Gers. Thierry Duvaldesin's tough gelding Swedishman, Christian Bigeon's Tiego d'Etang and Phillipe Moulin's Valse Darling from the Ecurie Victoria Dreams stable are the others in the market. Although classics occurred in Finland and Denmark, action in France was worthy of note beyond the impressive monte victory by Roxane Griff, the “grande dame” of trotting. Philippe Allaire might be eyeing America with his super trotter Ready Cash, but his eyes will be firmly on another pair of his charges at Caen tomorrow when Bird Parker and Bomba line up in the Group 1 Saint-Leger des Trotters, a 2450m three-year-old monte for 150,000 euros which highlights the biggest day of the year at the northern Basse-Normandie city. Bird Parker, a son of Ready Cash, is equally at home in the bike or under saddle, being a group two monte winner and a runner-up under harness in several major group races including the Prix Emmanuel Marghouty and Prix Maurice Gheest. With top monte rider Yoann Lebourgeois engaged, Bird Parker was paying very short 3/2 odds early Tuesday while his stable mate, the filly Bomba was at 4/1. By Goetmals Wood, a noted under saddle sire, Bomba has won three of her six monte starts, including the prestigious group two Prix Ali Hawas but gallops have proven costly in her other two group outings and handicappers will have been wary of this. Splitting the two Allaire charges in the market is Fabrice Souloy's nice filly Beauty Turgot, the winner of the Prix Holly du Locton under saddle and a placegetter in the bike in the Prix Une de Mai, the biggest race for 2YO fillies in France. Pascal Daulier's Babar des Brouets, a son of Giant Cat, is also coming in for early support having run a fourth placing in one of his two group two monte starts. The others in the market are Blooma d'Heripre (Rolling d'Heripre) a three-win colt trained by Gregory Thorel who is making his first group start and Brise de l'Alba (Quido du Goutier) a filly from William Bigeon's barn who was runner up in the Prix Holly du Locton. There is a second monte of note on the card with the Prix Henri Balliere, over the same distance for 4YOs, but for 120,000 euros and graded Group II. With Roddy Kuiper's top-ranked filly A Nous Deux missing from the event, Ake Kristoffersson's Love You stallion Airport (Love Yo) who was a gallant second in both the last two group montes is under even money to win this. He will be ridden again by Eric Raffin. Hughes Levesque's Cygnus d'Odyssee mare Astree de l'Iton is making her first group start after a couple of impressive wins under saddle in lower grade races is the next best supported in the market, and has Yoann Lebourgeois on board for the trip. Alexandre Abrivard will be on board talented Hasting mare Agrippine, which is trained by Laurent Claude Abrivard and handicappers are hoping she can find the form that saw her second in the group one Prix de Vincennes, after several DQs in recent outings. Eight additional contestants have yet to be named. Nahar blossomed last year after being acquired in spring 2012 by hockey playing brothers Henrik and Daniel Seden. They placed the horse with conditioner Robert Bergh and the historical stayer became enlightened with speed. The then seven year-old was second to Sanity in the Norbotten Pris and won a V75 test at Bollnas. He won twice that winter (2013-2013) in France before earning an Elitloppet start with a 1.09.7kr win at Gavle. He finished a good second to Sebastian K in his Elitloppet elimination and then won the final easily in 1.10.1kr defeating Arch Madness and Timoko. Nahar Nationality: Sweden (Stall Sedin HB) Trainer: Robert Bergh Åge/Sex: 9 g Love You – Mahonny Broline Earnings: 9.117.098 kronor KR record: 1.09,7 Later in the season after several disappointing and off-stride appearances, Nahar was put away and a comeback prepared for, leading to the 2014 Elitloppet. In related news trainer Thierry Duvaldestin reports that Pascia’Lest is expected to be fine for the Elitloppet after a disappointing sixth in the Lotteria first elimination. The trainer blamed a long journey to Naples and the track surface. He expects the Solvalla track to be more suitable and will fly his horse from Belgium to Stockholm. Thomas H. Hicks

Seven of 16 starters have accepted 2014 Elitloppet invitations including Maven and Uncle Peter from the USA, perhaps among the best of the solid group of North American trotting sprinters in training. The Elitioppet is rated as one of the world's top harness racing events. Other hopefuls of note in the accepted field include Timoko of France that was a surprising winner in his last start there with Bjorn Goop driving for trainer/owner Richard Westerink. Highly regarded Italian entrant Pascia'Lest was a disappointing sixth in last weekend's Lotteria elimination and scratched from the consolation. All eyes will be on Uncle Peter and teamster David Miller in this weekend's Broline Copenhagen Cup over 2011 meters and on the Finlandia AJO field in Helsinki that will battle in that 1609 meter test. The long shadow of Italian superstar Varenne looms over Mack Grace SM as he attempts to emulate Italy and arguably the world's greatest trotter, when he steps out on Naples Agnano raceway Sunday in the Gran Premio della Lotteria. Varenne is one of a select group of horses that have won Italy's great race, run in three heats and a final over 1600m on the same day, three times. In two of those years, 2001 and 2002, Varenne also added Sweden's greatest race, the Elitloppet, to France's greatest race, the Prix d'Amerique. And for good measure in 2001, he also crossed the pond to capture the US Breeders Crown and the Trot Mondial in Canada which is why he was also named, uniquely, Horse of the Year in both France and the US. Mack Grace SM has tried to do both, after proving almost unstoppable in Italy in 2012 and 013, winning 20 group races including the Lotteria twice, he was invited to both the Elitloppet and the Prix d'Amerique. But he did not make the Elitloppet final, and finished 14th in the French classique. It seems he does not win outside Italy, and for all his ability to string win upon win in his country of origin, it fails the greatness test. A son of unheralded US export stallion CC's Chuckie T, Mack Grace SM is one of only two of the stallion's progeny who have won more than 100,000 euros in seven crops racing, although admittedly moderate numbers (189 foals). He did not show anything like champion potential in his first three seasons racing, but if he is a late developer, he might also, ironically, be a beneficiary of the woes that have beset Italian racing which has driven many of the top Italian horses (and trainers) to France and Sweden. But the shadow of Varenne will not be far away should he win his third Lotteria, and it will also be their on the day for the son of Waikiki Beach has also passed on his greatness, in diluted form admittedly, to many of his offspring, indeed there are four in the three Lotteria heats tomorrow. But for Mack Grace SM, two of his greatest obstacles are sons of the great horse, Italian Derby winner Pascia' Lest, now trained in France by the brilliant Thierry Duvaldestin and Napoleon Bar, trained by Catello Savarese, a very accomplished horse himself. Pascia' Lest was a brilliant winner of the Prix d'Atlantique in France last start, beating the likes of Timoko, Unives de Pan, Roxane Griff and Tiego d'Etang, all genuine stars of French and European racing. His previous start had been back in his place of birth where he ran second to Mack Grace Sm in the GP Campo di Mirafiori, the first race of the new season in early March at Turin, but he has improved since then. And Napoleon Bar, a year younger than Mack Grace Sm, who was eighth in that race, turned up at the same venue a fortnight later and turned the tables in the GP Costa Azzurra. Both races were over the same 1600m trip they will race twice today. Napoleon Bar is a heavy favourite to win Batterie C (from No Man's Land, Olona Ok and Bagley) while Pascia' Lest is an equally short-priced favourite from Batterie A, to advance from Sweden's Monster Drive and local hopes Owen CR and Oncle Photo CR. Mack Grace SM is strongly favoured to win the second batterie, from Linda di Casei, Oneghin del Ronco and Mineiro As. So will it be Mack Grace SM, joining an elite group of three-time winners, or will the sons of Varenne write a further chapter in an extraordinary legacy. by David Sanders, for Harnesslink.com

A superior field will gather at Agnano, in Naples Italy for the Lotteria this weekend, with Italian standout Mack Grace SM leading 24 trotting superstars in one of the sport's greatest races. The Lotteria is a Group I event which is one of the four Grand Slam events on the UET Masters series, which means quadruple points for placegetters for the UETMasters Series final. Pascia' Lest, Napoleon Bar and Bagley are among the favourites among the 24 elite horses who will attempt the arduous two-race series. Gros Bios-based Dutchman Ron Kuiper looks to have a rising monte star in his stable in A Nous Deux who heads the field in the 120,000 euro Group two Prix Rene Palyart at Vincennes tonight. The mare is owned by legendary French breeder Jean Pierre Dubois and is one of two in the race by Goetmals Wood. The well-travelled Kuiper was introduced to the Fabulous Gros Bois training centre when a stable lad for Stefan Hultman, the trainer for the powerful Travkompianet Stall AB, when they would rent boxes of Pierre Vercruysse in the early 2000s. Now established in France on his own account, Hultman's stable star Maharajah is still a regular winter visitor to Kuiper's training barn as Hultman and Kuiper maintain a close relationship. A Nous Deux is coming off a last start fourth in the Prix Beaumanoir a 4-5YOs event at Vincennes, after beating her own age group in the last two montes that have been contested for the A-generation, the Prix Louis le Bourg and Prix de Pardieu. These were her first two attempts at group racing, and she will be once again partnered with top rider Nathalie Henry, and they are at short odds to go three from three. His likely toughest opposition comes from ex-pat Swede's Ake Kristoffersson's Airport, a Love You stallion from the powerful Ecurie des Charmes. Airport, was a close second in the Prix Louis le Bourg after leading for most of the journey and then ran down the field under harness in the Prix Phaeton, his first attempt at group racing in the bike. Eric Raffin will be up for the stallion's second group race under saddle, who looks bred for the part. Airport is from the same family as top monte specialist Quarry Bay, a runner-up in the Prix de Cornulier. Laurent Claude Abrivard is represented by the well supported Agrippine a mare by Hasting who will be ridden by Alexandre Abrivard. She was a runner up in the group one monte, Prix de Vincennes but has galloped in her last two monte races and was a distant ninth last start in the Prix Phaeton under harness. Pierre Coignard lines up group two Prix Camille de Wazierres winner Al Capone Jet a son of Jag de Bellouet who will be ridden by Matthieu Abrivard. He has galloped both times since his prestigious group two win in January. Asana Trembladaise, a well performed daughter of Kuadro Wild steps out with trainer Anthony Dollion in the saddle. A runner up in the group one Saint-Leger Des Trotteurs last year, she had two group two monte wins in a row at the start of the winter meeting, but has been unplaced in three starts since the start of the year. Thierry Duvaldestin has entered Aquarelle de Fael a daughter of Look de Star who, has a group two placing under saddle, and will be ridden by Franck Nivard. Okay, so I really should be celebrating the fact that we got three first up picks in Leg 1  BBS Sugarlight (1.25),Leg 2  Borga Effekt  (4.39), Leg 5 Caramella B.F  (6.03) and for our $2 win bets we picked up $23.24 and even with Timoko shocker in the Prix de l’Atlantique. But... We’ve followed Leg 6 runner Chapeau all year, and as it always happens the minute you take the dollar off him, it’s enough off his back to propel him to a win – AT 14.96. AAAAARGH. Okay, I’ve calmed down, I really have. As for the other picks, Ed You nosed out Digital Ink, on the line by the shortest of noses and I wouldn’t have picked him in a million goes. Chapeau (AAAAARGH) dudded our sixth leg and the failure of Asterix Hornline our anchor, stopped us getting a share of the 5 correct. Anyhoo, we brush ourselves off and get back in the saddle for this week’s racing, which is top draw at Argentan and Aby. So  Good luck. V75-1 Lovely Godivas lopp   2140m: Although there are quite a few here such as Stylish Hanover (5), Gislea As (7), M.T Harmony (6) and Hankypanky Pagan (12) who have real claims here,   I think the draw makes this a race between two of the inside horses in Youana (1) and Sahara Fairytale (3).  Selection 1 (3)  V75-2 Klass I  2140m:  In our system we need to straight anchors, and Pedro Bi (1), with eight wins in 16 attempts looks like a horse on the up, which won’t stop here. From the pole he is my first anchor.  Selection  1 V75-3 Olympiatravet, Final (GrI UET Masters Series)  2140m:   So many good horses in this and you need to go quite wide to get the winner. Noras Bean (10), Yarrah Boko (8) and Sanity (7) are the big guns but from the draw I fancy Andover Hall stallion Brad de Veluwe (4) to get a piece of this.    Selection  10-8-7-4 V75-4 Klass II   1640m:  This looks like a race between the highly impressive Ni Talar Bra Latin (10)  and Confectioner (11)  who has picket line form. These two pick themselves.  Selection 10 (11)  V75-5 Olympiatravsstayern  3140m:  Six of Winning Loves (15) 20wins wins are over this distance, and he has plenty of placings too. A 20m handicap is nothing over 2 miles and he will be in the mix. Paying Love (12)  and Freeman T Porter (14)  should be kept safe. Selection 12-14-15 V75-6 Silver division 2140m:  Nougat As (8) and By Air (3) have strong claims in this race, we need a second anchor and I just think last start winner Olympic Kronos (6) is  a big  talent, and Lutfi Kolgjini will get him to the front and dominate proceedings. Fingers crossed though.  Selection  6 V75-7 Bronze division  1640m:   The Bronze division is the last, leg and we have kept our powder dry to hopefully cover this. Mr Pellegrino (4) , Paramount (1), Castor Boko (12) and KLM Buymethemoon (3) and Kaiser Broline (2) should give us a good shot at this. Selection  4-1-12-3-2 R4: Criterium  de Vitesse de Basse Normandy (GrII UET MS) 1609m:  Neither Thierry Duvaldestin or Jean-Paul Marmion have won this race before, despite illustrious careers and they front up with the race favourites in Swedishman (1) and Roi du Lupin (4) respectively. Both are geldings and so are ineligible to race in the French classics.  Roi du Lupin has won 1.5 million euros and has rtu second in this race before, while  Swedishman 580K has a highly accomplished career but this is his first start at a mile, although he has won at 2100m.  There are three other euro millionaires in the race, including the one with the fastest time, Reve de Beylev  (8) (1.09.5 or 1.51.4MR)  for Sebastien Guarato, who has also not won his region’s top race.  He has raced three times over a mile for two seconds and a third, behind champions Commander Crowe and Timoko, who are not in this field.  Despite the outside  draw, I think he can win this if he can get some cover and is my selection. Argentan is in the heart of the Normandie breeding industry, and the red dust track which holds Saturday's UET Masters Series, the 100,000 euro Group Two Criterium de Vitesse de Basse Normandie, is near the centre of town. It is fitting then, that so many of the names which have become synonymous with the booming French breeding industry are located near the town. Take Coktail Jet, the sire who is credited as starting the Franco-American revolution, who won this race in 1995, resides not 25 minutes away at Jean-Etienne Dubois' luxurious establishment, which spreads between two former properties at Haras de la Perriere near the village of Belfonds. When Coktail Jet won the race, it was just the second time it had been raced over the imperial mile distance (increasing from 1600m) and he showed his credentials by lowering the from 1.12.8 to 1.11.8 (1.57.1 to 1.55.3MR). Six years later Coktail Jet sired the mare Ivory Pearl for Jean Luc Bigeon to win in 2001 before Jean-Etienne himself captured this race with a son of Coktail Jet, Jam Pridem in 2002. His father, France's greatest modern breeder, Jean Pierre Dubois, whose Haras de la Brosse is 20 minutes north at Nonant Le Pin, captured the race with another son of Coktail Jet, a certain Love You in 2005, who then himself sired another winner Quaker Jet (2012) - owned by Jean Etienne (who also owned and trained 1999 winner Giesolo de Lou). Jean-Etienne will be back again with Turbo Jet, who despite his name is a son of Joyau d'Amour and no relation to his namesake. The other prominent member of the Dubois clan Jean Philippe, who resides 15 minutes away from both at Fresneaux to the south-east owned last year's winner Texas Charm, who was driven that day by his son, Julien and stands there at stud at Haras de Fresneaux, which as is usual, has a full training facility. The pair again combine in this race, with trainer Philippe Moulin with Valse Darling while Jean-Philippe's other son Etienne will be behind Voyage de Reve while Jean-Philippe himself will be partner Volcan d'Urzy in a three-way assault on the race. To carry on the family connections, Louis Baudron, who is the grandson of both Jean Pierre Dubois and Roger Baudron, who won the race in 1986 with Navigo, is represented by Vive Majyc, and will be keen to carry on the strong family tradition. None of the other trainers have succeeded in capturing the race although some of the real heavyweights of the game are from this region and have horses entered. Thierry Duvaldesin is also in the "arrondiseement of Argentan" at Le Ferte-Frenel and he fronts with one of the favourites Swedishman, a well accomplished journeyman gelding as is Fabrice Souloy, who has Quinoa du Gers which he trains at his base at Ginai, 30 minutes away in the same region. And leading trainer Sebastien Guarato, originally from Bordeaux, but who learned his trade mostly at Haras de Ginai, and trains at nearby Clopin is represented by Reve de Beylev. And trainer Jean Paul Marmion, who briefly trained with Roger Baudron but trains in Maupertuis in central France, has two runners in one of the favoured runners Roi du Lupin and Talicia Bella. A race so close to home, for so many of the participants will surely provide one of the highlights of the weekend. Hippodrome Enghien in France today played host to the Gr. I International Prix de l'Atlantique with a 200,000e purse over the 2150 meters autostart sprinter distance (1-5/16 miles). Italy's Pascia'Lest (5m Varenne-Superiors Sun-Diamond Way) prevailed in a race record 1.11.3kr as he received a perfect pocket trip from reinsman Enrico Bellei for trainer Thierry Duvaldestin and owner Samuele Querci. The winner was off at 10/1 odds and scored his 13th career win now for earnings of 919,382e. Bellei was able to take the early lead away from Univers de Pan (Philippe Daugeard). In front briefly, the winner then pocketed when Univers de Pan was quick on the retake. Timoko sat third for Pierre Vercruysse but could not keep with the leading pair in the drive. Bellei waited and then sprung to the attack, finally gaining superiority as the wire approached. Univers de Pan was a brave second with Caballion third but disqualified. Tiego d'Etang was placed third for Christian Bigeon with Timoko and Olmo Holz awarded spots four and five. In the beaten field were Quinoa du Gers (sixth), Quoumba de Guez (eighth) and Roxane Griff (a fading ninth). Pascia'Lest has been under the tutelage of Thierry Duvaldestin since November, but had never passed the winning pole for the new trainer until today, and in a superb manner. Duvaldestin was at Saint -Malo today and posted four winning drives with his pupils. Pascia'Lest became one of the sprinter kings of Enghien- Soisy, including Main Wise As and Exploit Caf , other Italian champions that had won the "Atlantic " in their racing careers. Also getting support is Alesia d'Atout, a mare by in the stable of Dominique Mottier, who won the Prix Charles Tiercelin (G2) in January and was third favourite in the Prix Paul Leguerney. The proudly French-bred chestnut Prince Gede (83% French trotter) was a wonderful performer on the track (a winner of the French triple crown marathon Prix de Paris no less) and his daughter from his first crop Athena de Vandel has certainly inherited a lot of his traits, and will also come in for plenty of support. And Ganymede has proven to be one of France's unheralded heroes in the breeding barn, a proven producer of top class performers in France and Italy, and throughout Europe. He is represented by Adelie who will be driven by Alexandre Abrivard for Laurent Claude Abrivard.
